Gina, whatever you decide on hotels is fine with me. Sounds like a real bargain; thanks for the info.

Cort, you're leaving us for a bachelor party? Oh, geez, where are your
priorities? :D :D :D

Burair,

What can I do to help with the food for the get together? Can I bring something or would it be better to merely contribute money?

Let me know via PM or be sure and post on the thread what is needed.

Thanks

I have already drafted in my friend for the cheesecake :) -- I was thinking we could all contribute to the barbecue ... bring in something you would like to share to put on the grill, or alternatively ( if for e.g. you are coming from far and things would spoil ) you could bring something to drink ( lemonade, soda etc. )

That should about cover it, let me know what you think..

I am so excited to hear about the cheesecake. You know that's the only reason we're coming - just kidding :D :D

I think each of us bringing the type of meat we want to eat to throw on the grill would be great. And then maybe some type of side dish for all to share? If we are coming from a distance, chips & dip, rolls, brownies or something similar would travel well and give us a good variety.

Any thoughts from others?

Burair...I like that 3pm time ... excellent :).

*grins devilishly*

Wouldn't you like to know? ;)

Seriously....I was very disheartened when my sis's fiance told me the bachelor party will be May 14. He must've seen the look on my face because his quick-witted response was, "I thought you'd want to go...ya know...for yourself". LOL! I then told him about the vr.com/achaheart [BTW, Burair...don't forget to post the added details there, too, if you haven't already] gathering...and he suggested I join them "in progress". Apparently, they are going to eat dinner at Prairie Rock in Elgin ... and then move to other places (to be determined, apparently) as the evening progresses....

Gina,
It sounds good to me. We'll have started the day before in Central Mo picking up our son from college, but we can bring an assortment of chips.
Put us down for Friday and Saturday night; it's not absolutely positive due to a number of factors, but it's about as sure as it's going to get.

Finally got through the red tape and heard back from the directorate regarding our get-together and they have given permission for the Users Center to be opened on Saturday for us but just upto 7:00 p.m. After this we can go for dinner and move to one of the neighborhood game parlors to hangout some more.

So on to the Agenda:

  • 9:00 a.m: Meet for the hike in front of the Anderson Barn
  • 9:30 - 11:00: Hit the trails around the village and near the science center.
  • 11:00 - 11:30: Short tour of Wilson Hall and the accelerator.
  • 12:00: Back to Anderson Barn for the barbeque
  • 3:00: Open the piano room at the Users center. Short talk ( after cheesecake :D ... )
  • 3:30 - 6:30: Canoeing on the village lakes. Pool at the Users Center.
  • 7:00: Dinner
  • 9:00 - ?? : Hangout in PapaHappyStar's neighborhood :)

Please let me know when to expect you and your family it may actually be a good idea to register everyone as guests with lab security ( even though there are no longer any restrictions on lab access to public areas ) -- e-mail: burair.kothari at gmail.com.

[Cort: I will post this on the ACHA board unless you do it first]

Wow, that sounds like a fun-filled day. Glenn's surgery is Monday of that week, and he's hoping to be able to come with me. I'll let you know shortly before the event if our daughter will be coming.

Burair,
Three of us, maybe four, intend to make the trek! Bob, my husband, and Mark, our son, will be with me. Paul might endure the sidetrip to Fayette so he can tour Fermilab. That's yet to be decided.
Do we know if Gina has secured a rate for the hotel she's recommending? I need to make a reservation pretty soon one way or another. We would drive in Friday night and would meet you all Saturday morning.
How strenuous is the hike?
I might pass on it considering the long car ride the day before.

I have negotiated a rate at Candlewood Suites (Naperville) for $75 but, you may be able to get a lower rate if you go on-line (go figure  ).

http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/cw/1/en/hd?hotelCode=chiwi

There is also a Homestead Suites in Naperville that I am waiting to hear back from about a lower rate (around $59). I should hear from them by Friday. I think that is a much better deal and they have nice rooms.

http://www.homesteadhotels.com/minisite/default.asp?Portal=1&hotelID=86

I am sure we will be able to get rooms at either place with no problem next week or even later.

Will let you know when I hear back from Homestead.

Burair:
Just posted over at the acha group.

Gina:
I also added your comments about the hotel availability. I cringed just after I posted because I neglected to ask you first, but since this is an all encompassing gathering, I hope that's OK....

Sidenote from me:
I will probably bow out at dinner time, as I have another commitment that evening, relative to my sister's upcoming wedding ;).

Naperville is a distance from Batavia. Did you try Geneva Gina? There is a Comfort Inn there. Just found a rate of $69. It's also a beautiful little antique town. Good resturants, etc. Right on the river. You may want to check it out. Only 2 miles from Batavia.

PS. If you decide to stay in Geneva......Mill Race Inn usually has a great brunch on Sunday.

I second the Geneva idea, nice town -- Naperville is getting to be a mini metropolis on its own.

I should change the word hike to "stroll", we will have my two year old son with us anyway so I am sure there will be plenty of detours and stops to examine bugs and sticks... Probably walk a couple of miles near the lakes and in the forest preserve, the high rise and the village will always be nearby in case you need to stop.

We will remember to bring our bug case and magnifying glass. They can have hours of fun with that! :)

Our daughter still loves chasing bugs. Her new thing is a little wrist band for her portable Sea Monkeys :D

You are right, Naperville is a bit of a drive. However, even tho the Candlewood is identified as Naperville, it is actually in Warrenville. We stayed there the last time and it is 3 miles from the "back" gate of Fermilab.

Burair, do we still need a pass or escort to get in the back entrance?

I will check on Geneva hotels and advise on what I find.

You dont need a pass anymore to get in through any gate, I will fill out the security form anyway with the time everyone is supposed to come -- they wouldnt let Cort in last time, glad the security stuff is done with.

We'll probably go for dinner to the same thai place in Geneva we went last time, I think everyone liked it then, and its extremely reasonably priced. Sunday is a good day for a stroll in Geneva...

Ishaq ( my son ) is going to have a lot of fun :)

Marcia, my Mapblast shows Peru being about 1:30 from Batavia. You're in the neighborhood!!!!

Hi Marcia,

You are about 1.5 hours from the front entrance to Fermilab, north on 38 and west on 88 the exit on 88 is Farnworth. There is a map of the lab down this thread, I will bump it up again in a bit.

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=peru,IL&daddr=Pine+St+&+Kirk+Road+Batavia,IL&hl=en

I should've mentioned the date is now set for the 14th of May -- even though the poll above is open for another week or so --- seems like you will be able to make it. Will be great to have you with us. Let me know via e-mail if you need detailed directions.

Regards,
Burair

SO AM I!

Would you believe they let a front-wheel drive "monte carlo" into that place...and wouldn't let me in with my rear-wheel drive 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS?

*shakes head*

(in mock tone) What IS this world coming to, anyway? (end mock tone)

*grins devilishly*

I'm just glad your wife was still at home for me to call...to get help getting past security :).
