Ross,

I guess the best way is to help Lynn pray that the repaired kidney will last her lifetime and that a partially functioning kidney is better than a removal. We all hope our surgeries will be the last one and that the right choice was made AT THE TIME.

Best of luck and hugs to you both.

Hello Ross, by what you've written in your previous post Lynn still has 30% of her damaged kidney functioning which when added up to her other 50% makes 80%, correct!? I suppose that will make a difference to her quality of life. It's like when the doctor decides to repair a bad valve rather than replace it. Even though it might not last as long as the patient would like it to, it's still better giving it a try. That was what I understood. Remember, she's still under the effect of medication, but once she can think straight, she can get all the answers from her the surgeon himself. Take care and giver her time to adjust to the new situation. We all need time when it comes to big changes in our lives.

Ross, I hope Lynn is feeling better today. I will continue to keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.

I expect by now she has been up and walked a bit. And using the pain meds!

We all hope our doctors make the right decisions. You won't know for awhile, probably.

Tell her hugs.

Well she was up and sitting in a chair when I got there today. No more Foley Catheter, but is still nauseated and on Morphine, so she is not allowed to eat anything. Only Ice chips. She's complaining up a storm about it too, so that's a good sign. Only problem with that is, she takes her wrath out on me about it. Guess we'll see what tomorrow holds. I walked her to the rest room a couple times today, so she can get out of bed pretty much by herself, but being all spaced on Morphine, I had to guide the Weeble and keep it from falling down. :)

Happy to hear the news Ross! Has she ever had surgery before? People tend to get more frurstrated when it's the first time since they didn't really know what to expect. Even though she's seen you go through it, it's never the same. I hope she starts being a good girl from now on and doesn't take it all out on you for too long. But for the time being, just let her vent and don't try to reason with her too much. Once she's recovered properly, you can be more firm with her if she gets stubborn. What she needs now is a lot of attention and a good dose of spoiling. Have you considered taking her a wee surprise such as a bunch of flowers or something else you think she might fancy? Women like that sort of thing! Good luck and take care!

Glad to hear she is sitting up and walking, Ross. We always take it out on those we love the most!
Hang in there and be sure to get some rest yourself.

Glad to hear she is up and getting around!!

Glad to hear she is up and getting around!!

Happy to hear that Lyn is able to get up and out of bed. Yes, you know that someone is feeling better when they start complaining!! I will continue to prayer for her speedy and uneventful recovery!!

Sending hugs!

We need to find something other then Dilaudid and Reglan for pain management and nausea. She is on a Patient Controlled Anesthesia pump and because the Dilaudid makes her nauseous, won't push the button as often as necessary and then sits there in pain. I know when I had my Hip done, I had the same thing and had to go off of it in favor of Demorol and Versed. All Dilaudid did for me was make me dopey, sick and in pain.

Good luck on finding that "other" pain management medication.

Sounds like she is up and fiesty ... a good sign. Please remind her that a good attitude will help her along that much quicker ;).

Thoughts/prayers continue coming your way.

They gave me one of those dilaudid pumps after my last surgery. I told the dr later they ought to quit using that stuff. It took my personality away; I was a true grump and hurt one of my daughters' feelings. Not like me at all to be short tempered but that stuff did it. I pushed that dang button the entire time I was in the hospital and it kept me doped up til I walked out the door. I will NEVER have it again if I am hospitalized and pain is involved. The pills or shots are better, IMHO.

Hope both of you have a better day today.

Let's hope they get the pain meds switched today. Tell the doctors that if they don't, one of them is going to have to take your place as Whipping Boy. :D

Seriously, pain meds that make you feel bad can really slow down the recovery and we want Lyn to heal well and as quickly as it's safely possible.

Tell them to switch to Percocet. It is the only pain med that does not make me nauseous.

BTW - glad to hear she is up and sort of around.

Sorry to hear that Lyn is reacting to dilaudid.

When I had a bad kidney stone, dilaudid was the only thing that touched the P A I N. The ER nurse took one look at me and said "Follow me - I've got something that will help". Almost instantly I went from excrutiating almost unbearable pain to "Oh, that's not so bad". Dilaudid became my next best friend at that moment!

Surprising how different opiates affect folks differently.

Morphine didn't do diddly-squat for me after my valve-replacement, but when they gave me a Percocet I came to believe that there really is a God.

Friend of mine with severe back problems found over time that the only pain med that works for her is Methadone. (Any doc can prescribe Methadone for pain - it's only when Methadone is being given for treatment of addiction that you gotta get it from a Methadone clinic.)

And I currently take Vicodin prn for pain. A lotta folks get high from Vicodin, it's a commonly abused drug: All it does for me is what it's supposed to do, kill pain.

FYI, all opiates are addicting. If you take them every day you'll end up going into withdrawal when you stop. Point of contention about how long that takes, some folks say it only takes 3-4 days, I think it takes a couple of weeks. You're not going to find yourself sticking up liquor stores to get your next hit of Percocet, but you may find yourself feeling like you've got a bad case of the flu, hurting all over and having the runs.

I guess this thread is still active.

Ross, its good to have someone to spout off, when in pain, someone that understands and will not be hurt and take it personal. Trust that you are holding up and your wife improves daily.
PAIN!! Its so nice to know somebody else, didn't get help from morphine.(not saying I enjoyed reading about your pain, Barry  ) I thought I was a physical weirdo (as well as mental :) ) so I was put on motrim I think thats the one, It worked great.

Well they did away with the PCA pump after I left and started her on Demerol. Big difference. Not as dopey, no nausea and seemed to hold the pain at bay. They stopped her I.V.'s altogether yesterday, pulled the penrose drain out of the kidney and had her eating REAL food. Looks like she's coming home today!

Great news!! Glad to here things are going better for her now. :) One thing I've learned from being in the hospital is there's no place like home! There's no place like home! Hope things continue to look up!

Liza :)

That's great news, Ross. We hope she comes home today and that her recuperation goes well. Please tell Lynn how much we are all rooting for her.

I'm so glad things are looking up for Lynn. I know what it is like to have one tragedy after another plaque you. But just maybe you have reached the turning point where things start to get better all around. I'm praying that you have.

Randy
