It really needs to be zero tolerance. Otherwise nothing will get done, and chaos and anarchy will reign.

And people will die just because of this element.

The scary part is where will these people head when everything is gone down there? If we do not nip this right now, this will continue to spread to other states. In addition, there are people already on the road who have no place to return to. This can get much more ugly than it is now.

It is so sad

It is so sad

Where are the "Big" thinkers? If they need buses, why don't they close down
all the schools in a five state area and send the buses to the SUPER?dome to pick the people up along with gas tankers to "nurse" the buses. I'm sure they could round up a couple thousand buses. The dikes broke-why drop those big sand bags? pull some boat in there and sink them, then plug the gaps
between the boats. Why not declare Marshal Law? Do what you have to do-but get things done. Talk about a day late and a dollar short! The first thing they should do is fire the mayor of New Orleans for not knowing that so many of his citizen either couldn't or wouldn't leave when told to evacuate.
This so needless.

I understand that the evacuation plan submitted in 02/03 for New Orleans indicated that 100,000 people would NOT be able to get out due to lack of money/cars/transportation. So shouldn't the plan have been taken one step further and provisions made to transport those without money/cars? What's the point of an evacuation plan that finds that 10 percent of the population of a metropolitan area is disposable?

I look at the pictures of the damage and all the suffering going on by Katrina, and I get a lump in my throat. My husband volunteered to go down there, but they won't let him go because they wouldn't have anyone to run swing shift. I wish there was something we could do. My brother is going to Iraq for two weeks and coming back for a few months and then going back to Iraq. He is in charge of 1600 men. I think it would be better if they sent that unit(which is a logistics unit) to LA to help out. They need to get a plan and GET ORGANIZED. This whole evacuation has been one big unorganized mess. They knew Katrina was coming, they should have had an idea before she came ashore of what they would do if the levees broke. THe levees were only supposed to support a category 3 hurricane. I think that's why so many people are angry. One mother was told to "scrape the poo off a diaper" and reuse it as needed. I would love to buy a couple of cases of diapers and send them down there. Heck, I have a crib that I am trying to get rid of, I would love to donate THAT. I mean, it's used, it's not perfect, but it works and I have a mattress to go with it too. Well, I better get going. Take it easy.

I'm hoping that the TV coverage of the looters yesterday will be saved...and when this is all over with..and some normal living comes back into New Orleans .They will be able to identify many of the looters..With the stores in background..they will know where these peple lived. (neighborhoods) I'm thinking that this was a part of NO that people who stayed were not hurt..so it should be easy to run them down.... they were all walking.....The National Guard should be in there soon.... and when the food they stole runs out..will they show up at feeding stations with their rolax watches, new shoes and jeans on.. I admire the ones that walked to Superdome and and Convention Center...they valued their lives more than a pair of Jeans.....Glad to hear they are being bussed out...to Texas..Let the looters stay in NO.. and come down sick with diarrea, ect....and when they catch them..make them pick up the thrash, ect..chained together..RCB..I agree...but the buses would have to come from the West..all roads East are still closed down.Ark. would be the only state that could come down..Miss. roads still closed as far West as Jackson Miss..I think now that the guard is in there..all people should be bussed out soon....with the help of boats, helicoptors, ect...The only ones I felt sorry for..are the elderly in wheelchairs, ect..the rest looked healthy enough to me to survive.. without food...raining now, so they can catch rainfall....( I'm talking about the hundreds sitting outside the Convention Center today) food just ran out..but Mayor of NO sent out an SOS late this afternoon and they should be getting food.Rambling enough.....Did anyone EVER see the mayor of NO??I didn't..Wonder where he was?..bonnie

What is with the snipers???? These few had better hope that the crowds waiting to be evacuated don't see them, or they will take them out. Makes a lot of sense - shooting at those coming to rescue you.

As far as the looters, my husbands comment when he saw some footage was "Just where does he think he's going to be using that TV and stereo?" I can understand people needing food and I've heard a lot of people defend the looters based on that. But most of the footage I'm seeing if of nonfood items. Those poor policemen that are there trying to stop it.

Inever thought Id be living through a realistic rendention of 'Mad Max'

They'll just send in an Army copter with .50 cal cannon and shoot those people. I'm just afraid some innocents are going to get taken out in the process.

Tonight's NBC News had a brief interview with a woman whose husband had left their (flooded) home in New Orleans in search of COUMADIN because of his mechanical heart valve. I hope he found some!

I think they are starting to shoot back at the morons shooting at the resuers. They are sending 17 people from my husband's command. He is making up a new watch bill. He supports it. I hope that the evacuation goes more smoothly now that they are sending help. I just wish that there was more that we could do for them. By the way, gas here shot up from $2.59 a gallon to over $3.00 over night. Man, I am glad I filled up BOTH cars yesterday! What a jump! I was in bed, and I looked at my husband and told him that I should go get gas in the jeep because I had a feeling that gas prices were going to go up. Smart, huh? I really hope that the rescue and relief goes more smoothly.

Buses everywhere, but not in N.O.

I simply don't understand why the buses aren't lined up bumper to bumper
to pick these people up? I-10 is a four lane interstate all the way to Houston,
I-49 nine feed it from the North. Why isn't every school bus from Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas on the way to N.O. to get those people out.
Even Lubbock is only 15 hrs. away and they must have a 100 buses. Houston
to N.O. can be done in six or seven hrs. round trip. If you have a 1000 buses,
on Tuesday, you would have everybody out yesterday on Wednesday. Come to think of it, it doesn't have to be a bus- if it were me I would be glad to ride
in the back of grain hauler, dump truck, cattle hauler or any big semi trailer just to get the hell out of there. There must be 10,000 of those truck around the six state area- what is more important to haul than people!

Why does that stupid helicopter keep dumping that little bit of sand is the
dike, when he could be dropping the same weight in pallets of food and water at the Superdome using the same equipment. If they are worried about people rushing to the pallets-Drop it a mile away on the road. As soon as the people know there is plenty of food and water, you could land it closer.
For all these people just to sit around and talk and do very little for these
poor souls is disgraceful.

Everyone PRAY, PRAY, PRAY. God is still in control and I sincerely believe that everything happens for a reason. I just wonder if He is trying to wake people up with all the disasters that have been happening. I have a deep feeling that it's not over. My heart goes out for all these families, especially the small babies and the children.

Yaps, was so glad to hear from you! Any others out there, I'll be praying for you.

our armory won't house US in a hurricane, but it is set up now with 100s of cots. Our town is filled with people from there, bless their hearts. I don't know how much we can do, but requests are all over the place here for everything from $ to diapers and paper cups and food and clothing and housing and transportation and rooms in our own houses.

This destruction was predicted - and anticipated 3 yrs ago. So what happened to 'the plan'? I heard one little old lady in New Orleans berating her commissioners and councilmen/women for 'allowing' this to happen to their city. They have known for years and COULD have fixed it - but didn't.

Wish this wasn't happening to my town, but it is and probably yours, too. Ms and La people are definitely displaced and where are they going to go, except to us and to you. I only pray that the criminal element just stays over there where they can be rounded up. We don't want them in our towns.

The hospital where my husband works is scheduled to take patients that are transferred from Coastal facilities.
Our son attends college is central Missouri; they are filling dorm rooms with students who can't attend college at Tulane.
Refuges from the hurricane who drove to SE Missouri are being housed in a local shelter created when churches and the American Red Cross joined forces.

We are 500 miles away, but distance won't stop us from helping where we can.

Someone asked on the news yesterday why hotels weren't opening themselves up for refugees. Today, the city of Detroit (I think) has done just that because they have many empty rooms due to lack of conference booking and they offered to pay airfare for those evacuated to Detroit.

Don't we also have a lot of military bases that are empty? Or is all the hubbub about closings just lip service? Why not use those bases? Yes, maybe they are not as well maintained as the Hiltons but at least there are buildings and toilets and places to bring in food and supplies.

I never thought I would actually see "refugees" fleeing an area in this country quite in this way. I am reminded of stories of other countries but, sheltered as I am, I thought we had these things all covered. Obviously that is not the case.

My BIL lives in Houston and they are concerned now about crime being "bused" into their city after trying to be a kind neighbor. I hope things stay civil there but I am worried. Sure would discourage other cities from helping.

God help us because we are not really doing such a great job ourselves. Of course, I still have to remind myself that it only been a few days.

My family is setting up boxes with, essentials, food, aspirin..diapers..dry and canned goods...(ladies needables)..quilts too..my BIL, he works on rigs outside Houston..he will be taking these items to the Astrodome, he dosent own a gun, and I wish he would get one...hijacking etc....I am worried.. but proud of what we are doing.... Yaps

Our thought and prayers are with all of you affected by Katrina.
The news reports are really shocking.
Thinking of you all

I agree about the closed military bases..We have one in our hometown of Selma, Alabama .Craig Airforce Base..Was closed about 10 years ago..It was a city by itself..with many housing for officers and non-officers..and still a large air strip..Made Selma a ghost town when they closed..Sad, I pass by on the way to Daddy's..See boarded windows in nice brick duplexs. they also had their own elementary school..I think that maybe the government sold the nice homes..to locals..and perhaps rented out most of the tall apartments that housed the Officers...but, that is something that each Governor should look into...... I don't think it is fair for Texas to have to house these thousands alone...I hope the Red Cross will send much of their donations to them (Texas)..I heard today they have collected millions already..These people don't have a home to go back to in NO.. I think that the Government should think about building a new town for them..Somewhere in the South .Doubt if they would want to move North.. How do others feel about rebuilding New Orleans? How would they decide which part to rebuild..Which part to just bulldoze down?? what will happen to the NO Saints football team? the French Quarter?..So many questions..So sad..bonnie
