Looters

Looters

I was reading my Internet news..said that 2 armed guards ..let the workers from Ritz-Carton Hotel come over and take anything they needed for their guests.. Meds, snack food, bottled water, ect..( Walgreens Drug Store) Doing nothing about looters taking food from Winn-Dixie.... but, I agree the looters were floating garbage cans down and taking clothes, jewelery, ect.. Not much that the police force in New Orleans can do... what I wonder about..where is the national guard?..Bonnie

oh no, that beautiful town and those beautiful old trees. What a shame. They say there is something about the hurricanes that when they touch ground, cause tornadoes. They explained it the other night but it was tech stuff. Helen will suffer the rest of the summer.

I heard today that the Gulf is 2-3 degrees warmer than usual and this is what is causing all this - and we still have til Nov to go. CNN talked about it this afternoon.

This morning they were saying that 10,000 Guardsmen and 20,000 (?) regular forces will probably be put into this thing instead of local police because locals are not equipped to handle all this going on all over the country; before it's over, much of the country will be affected by this.

We cannot get in touch with nephew who lives in Hattiesburg, Ms where the eye went after hitting Biloxi and Gulf Port - it was a 2 when it got to Hattiesburg. They are ok, probably, but without power, we think.

One of my favorite cousins passed away last night and now I just want to go home.

I've (finally) reached a friend in Baton Rouge LA. She's without power. Has young kittens (4-5 weeks old), so she's not going to work until the power comes back on and she can shut her house up. She works for the state and said that she did check in with her office and no one was there today. The office building has power & AC, but the computers aren't up.
She says it's somewhat difficult getting around, what with trees down. She told me several other friends are OK.
She said that Baton Rouge radio stations are reporting that evacuees from New Orleans are snapping up rental homes in B.R. until ...

My friends from the New Orleans area are esconced at a veterinarian friend's fishing camp, as he calls it, about 1 hour from Alexandria LA. There are 7 people staying there, with their cats. Took them from 4 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. Sunay night to reach the fishing camp from the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. One couple was heading to Jackson MS to stay with one of their sons, but reconsidered when friends called on cell phones saying Jackson could get hit pretty hard.
One of the 7 lives near downtown New Orleans. I Yahoo-Mapped her home and realized that she probably doesn't have a home anymore, what with the levees breaking; the home is between the Mississippi River & Lake Pontchartrain.
It took me nearly all day to reach my vet friend in Alexandria. I'm sure phone circuits are overwhelmed.

I saw an intra-office e-mail today at work. My newspaper is owned by Knight Ridder, which owns the Biloxi newspaper. As of about 1 p.m. or so today, there were dozens of the newspaper employees whose whereabouts were unknown. Could have evacuated far from Biloxi. Knight Ridder is moving employees in from other newspapers to help put out the newspaper. This is not an uncommon procedure; I can remember co-workers going from Fort Worth to Wilkes-Barre (PA? NJ?) in the late 1970s to fill in there, since newsroom employees there refused to cross picket lines even though it was not the Newspaper Guild that was striking.

I would not be surprised if Katrina surpasses all other natural disasters in the U.S. as far as damage is concerned. I've read books & stories about the Galveston hurricane around 1900 and the loss of life was horrific. The media & the electronic era may have kept Katrina from turning into another Galveston, but the path of destruction and accompanying tornadoes far worse and widespread.

I say shoot them (I can't believe I just said that  ) But it just makes me so upset. HEY! Let's loot people's businesses and homes - let's just kick them a little bit harder while they're down!!!!!

uh - odd you should say that - I said exactly the same thing when I saw them breaking into places to steal. Where in the world do they think they are going with that stuff. They HAVE NO HOMES - they CAN'T GET OUT OF TOWN - they CAN'T PLUG ANYTHING IN - they will be WITHOUT POWER, HOMES, ETC for months and months - or years. DUH

My daughter-in-l said "I don't believe you said that" so I took it back and said well, maybe a leg.

You know, it's one thing if someone is stealing food to feed their families (unless they are stealing from another family) but I feel no kindness to looters who are just out to profit from pain. In addition to causing more expense to us in the way of insurance, police protection, etc., we then have to pay money to keep them in prison. These are people that do not belong in the human race. Sorry for being so cold but life is hard enough without this scum in the way.

What's the answer? I don't know but shooting sounds OK to me. I guess that's not very Christian of me but enough is enough. People are dying out there and these worms are trying to profit from that.

BTW - my swimming pool just started overflowing.

The looting is out of control. They're rounding the looters up as they come out of the areas and shipping them to Ft. Hood and holding them. I guess under martial law, they can hold them until the notice is over. I say shoot them (I can't believe I just said that  ) But it just makes me so upset. HEY! shooting would be too easy and then you would have to pay to bury the mongrels. Perhaps they should be given the ultimatum that if they get caught their right to their own internal organs is forfeited. At least that way we could remove them from the gene pool and also pass on vital organs to people that could make a contribution to society....llike the good people on this website.

My thoughts go out to you all in the aftermath of Katrina.

Well the rain is still coming down here. Set a new record for rainfall yesterday. We got 2.29 inches. The old record set in 78 was 1.85.

news this morning is that it's going into Canada almost as we speak. Just think, it was only last thursday night that it sailed through south Florida (homestead/Key West) and look at its path and how far it went, taking pure devastation with it!

you have floods, Ross?

I have soggy land, but no real flooding at this point. May have a little by the time it's all done, but we sit pretty high up here. Others along the Ohio river or other streams are going to be in a little trouble.

Theyr'e all in IRAQ!

Not to start a political argument. It just makes me nutty that such devastation can go on in our own country and a large group of troops is overseas dying.

I want to do something, send clothes, I can't donate blood, what can I do????

I have been going to sunherald.com out of Biloxi and getting the news from there. Gulfport and Biloxi got hit hard. Hundreds probably dead and the towns about 80% destroyed. My husband and I go to Biloxi twice a year to gamble and have for the past 10 years. Biloxi is a beautiful town with old homes and lots of charm. At least 7 of the casinos are now gone. That is the towns main source of income. We had reservations for this Sunday for our next weeks vacation.

Bonnie, I am so sorry about Helen. I love that place. We used to go there all the time when the kids were smaller. We would trout fish in the back of the flea market and one of the hotels. Hopefully it will be back as good a s new soon. Although the pictures on tv look really bad.

Praying for all the people on the Gulf Coast that their lives can one day be back to normal.

Marsha,

Our Ledger-Enquirer paper wrote today that the Biloxi Sun Herald is being produced and printed at their facility in Columbus, GA. It said several employees and family are currently staying in Columbus.

Bonnie,

I immediately thought about you when I saw the overhead shots of Helen, GA. From your posting I guess y'all made it through OK. Can't say the same for Helen.

strawberry,

When one of the "talking heads" on the news pointed out the fact that "SO MANY" of our National Guard are overseas (not just in Iraq by the way) an Army General on the show pointed out that Mississippi has over 11,000 Guard Members. Currently, 3,000 are deployed out of state. That leaves 8,000 plus just in Mississippi. You think those helicopters you see plucking people off roof tops are being flown by civilians. SOAP BOX CLOSED.

I saw on the news last night that the Mayor of New Orleans was now blaming the additional flooding on the slow action by the Corp of Engineers. They took too long to start trying to close the leaking holes. I guess the "finger pointing" will now start over whose fault it was.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those hard hit areas down South.

May God Bless,

Danny

Hey everyone, its Yaps.
We made it through with some damage, but alive. :( I wouldve posted earlier, just couldnt... I am trying to think in a positive manner so to post as such,..lol..still working on it. I have friends and relatives in New Orleans..do not know how they are, power is intermittent here, my house is out of food, when we prepared, the stores were almost bare, now totally bare. The shops that are opened cannot stock as most employees are still gone, walmart..bare shelves... ppl are fighting for gas pumps..John wouldnt even let me leave the house yesterday, ppl are suffering a combo of road rage, gas rage and hurricane rage..a deadly combo.
I do thank Ross for taking time to seek me out and see if we were ok, you are an exeptional person Ross :) love the pup

Danny,

Those people plucking people off roofs are heroes. God Bless them. I'm glad there are troops there for the victims. I hope they can keep up their supplies, energy, and morale. I'm sure this is the kind of work they signed up for, though never wanted to have to do.

God bless all the victims and workers.

Yaps,
I've been worrying about you, so I was real glad to see you post. I'm sorry that conditions are so bad, but I will keep you in my prayers and hope that a higher power brings you relief.
Mary

Sorry I didn't get to post for you yet. I just got on just now to do so and see you've made it already. I'm in no way forgetting you. So many people unheard from and trying to help everyone find some form of contact. At this point, it's just impossible. Improving daily, but still impossible. Like I said, half the nations on it's way, the problem is getting to the areas where the help is needed, but you know that already.

I haven't had such a feeling of overriding sadness and sorrow since the week after 9/11; I simply can't imagine how NOLA will ever recover; let alone the AL and MS people.

It's a day of prayer; we know we're all pretty powerful in the department, so everyone take a minute.

I can hardly stand the thought of what it's like for those people and poor animals down there. It's all too sad.
