..DEVASTATING DAMAGE EXPECTED

HURRICANE KATRINA A MOST POWERFUL HURRICANE WITH UNPRECEDENTED STRENGTH...RIVALING THE INTENSITY OF HURRICANE CAMILLE OF 1969.

MOST OF THE AREA WILL BE UNINHABITABLE FOR WEEKS...PERHAPS LONGER. AT LEAST ONE HALF OF WELL CONSTRUCTED HOMES WILL HAVE ROOF AND WALL FAILURE. ALL GABLED ROOFS WILL FAIL...LEAVING THOSE HOMES SEVERELY DAMAGED OR DESTROYED.

THE MAJORITY OF INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS WILL BECOME NON FUNCTIONAL. PARTIAL TO COMPLETE WALL AND ROOF FAILURE IS EXPECTED. ALL WOOD FRAMED LOW RISING APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL BE DESTROYED. CONCRETE BLOCK LOW RISE APARTMENTS WILL SUSTAIN MAJOR DAMAGE...INCLUDING SOME WALL AND ROOF FAILURE.

HIGH RISE OFFICE AND APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL SWAY DANGEROUSLY...A FEW TO THE POINT OF TOTAL COLLAPSE. ALL WINDOWS WILL BLOW OUT.

AIRBORNE DEBRIS WILL BE WIDESPREAD...AND MAY INCLUDE HEAVY ITEMS SUCH AS HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES AND EVEN LIGHT VEHICLES. SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND LIGHT TRUCKS WILL BE MOVED. THE BLOWN DEBRIS WILL CREATE ADDITIONAL DESTRUCTION. PERSONS...PETS...AND LIVESTOCK EXPOSED TO THE WINDS WILL FACE CERTAIN DEATH IF STRUCK.

POWER OUTAGES WILL LAST FOR WEEKS...AS MOST POWER POLES WILL BE DOWN AND TRANSFORMERS DESTROYED. WATER SHORTAGES WILL MAKE HUMAN SUFFERING INCREDIBLE BY MODERN STANDARDS.

THE VAST MAJORITY OF NATIVE TREES WILL BE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED. ONLY THE HEARTIEST WILL REMAIN STANDING...BUT BE TOTALLY DEFOLIATED. FEW CROPS WILL REMAIN. LIVESTOCK LEFT EXPOSED TO THE WINDS WILL BE KILLED.

AN INLAND HURRICANE WIND WARNING IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS NEAR HURRICANE FORCE...OR FREQUENT GUSTS AT OR ABOVE HURRICANE FORCE...ARE CERTAIN WITHIN THE NEXT 12 TO 24 HOURS.

We have been getting the very outer rain bands here in southern Ohio. I am amazed at how big this storm is. My heart goes out to those in its powerful path.

I have just heard that all airports on the coast are shut. I have reservations to fly home Thursday to Ft Walton/Niceville Airport. If you have heard about the closings, do you know how far east the closings extend? They said it will take weeks to get the airline stuff straightened out.

Get your son to take you out to I-75..Hike up your skirt, thumb out..and hitchhike back to DFS...Bet one of those nice truckdrivers will stop and give you a ride..Show a litle leg. ..Of course, he would have to drop you off at a truckstop and do the same thing on I-10......then you can walk the rest of the way.. Is now on from Atlanta. had a tornado touch down between Atlanta and Alabama an hour ago...Farmhouse and chicken houses destroyed..many other damages........Cells, ect. will move thru all night in Georgia..and we are 7 hours from where Katrina made landfall.(Atlanta area)....Already 10,000 without power..They are calling these the outer bands of Katrina.....So be aware if you live near /far..from the main storm.....Now, they say all over Georgia.. ..Bonnie

Atlanta weatherman just said..the tornado that hit Ga...was 326 miles from center of the storm in Mississippi..So those of you in Tenn. and North..remember this. ..Said, thought there have been 2 deaths...from this...Bonnie

They've got flood warnings posted for us already and it's not even here yet. We are as ready as we'll ever get. I hate these things.

me, too. I have been glued to the TV since Friday - you just can't help it if you have someone/something involved. You just hope if you look long enough maybe it will quit - not.

We are officially on tornado & flood watches here. Sure wish I had the option of staying home tomorrow and hang out in my basement but I have to work. However, tomorrow is my day at the fire station so I should be around folks who know how to deal with emergencies.

Lots of people still in the path of this danger. I think Sherry is as well as many others. Please watch out and be safe.

talked to daughter last night and even tho our house is east of the actual landfall, she got winds/rain and it was still going at 7 last night!

My nephew and his family live in Hattiesburg and it struck them at category 2; the eye went right over them. I haven't heard yet about how they fared. Nephew has been through quite a few when he was growing up in Miami but his wife and children never have had the experience. If you are a newbie, it is so frightening.

As I see survivors of this storm this morning, my heart just breaks. Many will never recover from this. So sad - so sad.

Our power went on and off during the night..I thought I heard what sounded like a tornado....My cable is off..so read this mornings Atlanta Newspaper on internet..Sure enough, it said..a tornado struck the EconLodge in the Alpine Village of Helen..2 miles from me. .So, tornadoes can make landfall in the Mountains.....Still windy and raining..Bonnie

As I see survivors of this storm this morning, my heart just breaks. Many will never recover from this. So sad - so sad.

And yet, many others will and will rebuild in the same spots once again. That's the thing I could never understand.

flood insurance is federally funded so when all these beach properties go down, people just rebuild with your tax money. With all these recent hurricanes, tho, there is beginning to be some flak. The building and re-building is always the bottom line! Sadly.

Well the rain has just started here. Very light right now, but supposed to get heavier as the day goes on.

When I look outside, it looks like hurricane weather. Went through a couple of smaller ones in NJ & the appearance is the same. Fast moving clouds, various colors of gray, windy, rain coming in spurts and then solid, etc.

Sure am happy I was not further south but sad for all who were.

The tornado that touched down in our Alpine Village was worse than I thought...We took a ride down at noon..Was shocked to see Many powerline trucks and lawmen..stopping traffic both sides of town..It touched down just outside..where the famous Indian Mound ..and river starts..All of helen is out of power..many buildings had damage..I'm wondering what the tourist are doing..that where staying in Motels?..No food.. We saw trees snapped..I have no cable..but heard it is bad..Maybe my Ga. members can see it on T.V. and let me know....Ann, it was right where we had lunch..and on down thru town... Weather has been dark all day..very humid..so yall watch out up there....Shows how far things from center of Huricane can affect other lives, ect.. I hope they have things cleaned up before this Labor Day weekend..Many businesses will lose money.. . I know it is small..compared to New Orleans and Mississippi.....but, they depend on their income before winter comes..It is dead (town) from Nov-April....Ya..Hubby just turned T.V. on..Back on..Will go and see what they have on helen..Bonnie

OMG...Yes..Atlanta 5 P.M.. news had a helicopter flying overhead Helen .AWFUL...The main road..looked like a dirt road. MANY trees, buildings, ..damaged..The worse..was the River that flows thru downtown..where thousands of tourist come every weekend to tube float.. Entire river had trees laying across river..This is where I go to walk my dog everyday..It was like a Riverwalk..with many trees, picnic tables, ect... Tubing owners will have to suspend all tubing now..Will take weeks to get the river cleaned up..flows to Atlanta..for the lake there.. They were saying that hopefully, when Octoberfest starts in 2 weeks..they will have the town cleaned up.....Bonnie
