I believe they are cancelling St Patrick's Day parades. Several cities have done that already. Here in Ireland, we have 21 cases at the minute. which is two more than Italy had less than a month ago. We seem to be taking very few precautions on a national level. It's as if the economy is more important than people's lives.
I happened to see my cardiologist today. I am asymptomatic and was planning on getting the surgery but we agreed that I may want to wait out the virus for a month or two, assuming I continue being asymptomatic.Has anyone spoke to a cardiologist about this??? 'Underlying conditions' and 'Cardiovascular conditions' is rather vague. A healthy person with a mechanical valve and somebody in the latter stages of heart failure both fall into the latter category but are worlds apart. Thank you Freebird. That's good information. I've been searching for specific information but to no avail. I've my findings are below:I happened to see my cardiologist today. She seemed most concerned at what could turn out to be a shortage of hospital beds and that you don’t want to be in a hospital unless you have to be. Regarding risk, being pre-op I’m at more risk, but she said bypass patients would be at higher risk. She thought that folks with fixed valves would not be at increased risk.
If it's any consolation, my cardiologist felt that while they are still people with heart disease, a post-op patient shouldn't have increased risk.Thank you Freebird. That's good information. I've been searching for specific information but to no avail. I've my findings are below:
There's some general information here: What heart patients should know about coronavirus
And Adam Pick has published a piece here: Coronavirus, COVID-19 & Heart Valve Disease: Top 11 Facts
But rather frustratingly has nothing about post-op people.
Keep washing those hands people!

That's great news. I believe you said you'd gone back to work. Given where you live, are they letting you telecommute?I called my cardiologist to find out whether I'm in a vulnerable group. The response was that two months out of surgery, with a mechanical valve, I'm not unusually vulnerable to coronavirus symptoms/complications.
Yes -- I'm a software engineer, and my job can be done remotely. That's great news. I believe you said you'd gone back to work. Given where you live, are they letting you telecommute?
Safe and healthy travels to you!I fly home from Cleveland on Saturday, which is 10 days post-surgery (bio valve.) Their view is that while I’m recovering well, and otherwise generally healthy (w/the exception of the picc line they had to insert for an iv of antibiotics to treat an infection related to an incidental finding - a story for another day!) that my immune system is somewhat compromised since it is devoting most of its energy to healing from the surgery. Bottom line: Take normal precautions w/a strong focus on hand washing. I’ll likely go few places for six weeks, which is the vulnerable period post-surgery for a new valve to get infected. We will also limit in-home visitors. Have come too far!
