Since the times when the Mongols built Pekin and the Forbiden Palace China and invented the Silk road, the Black Plague came from China to Europe, 69 million people killed, is always 'china, What killed the armies of the Mongols ? , a chineese plague, they need to change their ways, and we must stop buying crap made in china, cheap, but crap.

Has anyone spoke to a cardiologist about this??? 'Underlying conditions' and 'Cardiovascular conditions' is rather vague. A healthy person with a mechanical valve and somebody in the latter stages of heart failure both fall into the latter category but are worlds apart. Here in Ireland, we have 21 cases at the minute. which is two more than Italy had less than a month ago. We seem to be taking very few precautions on a national level. It's as if the economy is more important than people's lives.

I believe they are cancelling St Patrick's Day parades. Several cities have done that already.

I live in Bangkok, Thailand and the threat is real..I got real sick Friday and had many symptoms of Covd 19 including severe respiratory distress - the pollution here has gotten out of control. This city of 10 million turning into a ghost town..

The stock markets are crashing. People aren't driving as much. The production of gasoline continues - so the prices drop in order to sell off the fuel, even as demand drops. If not for Covid-19 fears, there would be a lot mour driving. This president brags about how great it is for consumers that gas prices have come down. There's no mention of the reason.

I happened to see my cardiologist today. I am asymptomatic and was planning on getting the surgery but we agreed that I may want to wait out the virus for a month or two, assuming I continue being asymptomatic.

She seemed most concerned at what could turn out to be a shortage of hospital beds and that you don’t want to be in a hospital unless you have to be. Regarding risk, being pre-op I’m at more risk, but she said bypass patients would be at higher risk. She thought that folks with fixed valves would not be at increased risk.

i havent spoken to my specialist cardiac nurse for a month

i'm gonna phone up this week, as i'm due a CT scan soon

my AVR op due sometime in summer, will i think be postponed now

i dont want to be going into any hospital for a good while until this virus peaks and peters out

very worrying times....italy has just gone on lock down....not just the north, the entire country

Thank you Freebird. That's good information. I've been searching for specific information but to no avail. I've my findings are below:

There's some general information here: What heart patients should know about coronavirus

And Adam Pick has published a piece here: Coronavirus, COVID-19 & Heart Valve Disease: Top 11 Facts
But rather frustratingly has nothing about post-op people.

Keep washing those hands people!

If it's any consolation, my cardiologist felt that while they are still people with heart disease, a post-op patient shouldn't have increased risk.

I read today that hypertension was the primary underlying disease of those who died in China.

Thank you to all of you for your info. These are scary times particularly if you are older.

Yes as you hit 50 and over the risk goes up..I have had respiratory issues from the pollution here in Bangkok + have cardiac issues..Bad news

I called my cardiologist to find out whether I'm in a vulnerable group. The response was that two months out of surgery, with a mechanical valve, I'm not unusually vulnerable to coronavirus symptoms/complications.

That's great news. I believe you said you'd gone back to work. Given where you live, are they letting you telecommute?

From Adam Pick’s site-
"People who have already had heart surgery or transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), who are otherwise healthy, should have normal immune systems. So, they should be no more susceptible to complications from a viral infection.”

I fly home from Cleveland on Saturday, which is 10 days post-surgery (bio valve.) Their view is that while I’m recovering well, and otherwise generally healthy (w/the exception of the picc line they had to insert for an iv of antibiotics to treat an infection related to an incidental finding - a story for another day!) that my immune system is somewhat compromised since it is devoting most of its energy to healing from the surgery. Bottom line: Take normal precautions w/a strong focus on hand washing. I’ll likely go few places for six weeks, which is the vulnerable period post-surgery for a new valve to get infected. We will also limit in-home visitors. Have come too far!
