Starting coumadin today isn't going to instantly make you anti-coagulated like taking Lovenox does. There have been several stories on here of people who have had problems with bleeding following surgery while they were on Lovenox, and then as soon as they were taken off and just started back on their regular dose of coumadin, they were fine. They problems Ross had with removal of his teeth pops into my mind as something very similar to what you are going through. Do a search for it in here.

As for what is going on in the hospital, I would definitely put a call into my cardio's office pronto, if you haven't already, even if he doesn't have privileges in that hospital. Then I would ask the Drs who are withholding the coumadin from you if they are prepared for the ramifications, to them, that are going to come if they don't start you on coumadin. They are just worried about your bleed, not worried about you stroking out because that won't be their problem. Sorry you are having so many problems. It sucks to be sick and having to second guess and educate your drs at the same time. I hope you get better soon.

Gail is correct, for a St. Jude in the aortic position, the risk of stroke w/o coumadin is low; even lower still with only asprin.

I don't know anything about rectal hernias, but I've had fissures and rhoids and that was a big worry before my valve replacement and subsequent warfarin therapy. I talked to my colorectal surgeon and had my colonscopy early just to ease my mind before valve replacement surgery. I can fully understand your concerns.

I assume you are on liquids so there are no solids going through. Make sure they check your iron, I've gone low with just a bleeding rhoid.

I'm sorry you are still having trouble with bleeding. I have gone to a teaching hospital for each of my surgeries as well as the 3 stays for bacterial endocarditis. For my BE, I was given a resident who was on my case and was very responsible. When I had to return to the ER for the 2nd time with a fever, he showed up. I said I was lucky he was there that night so he knew my case, but he said he was there because I was there!
I felt very taken care of by this resident. Too bad you are not feeling the care from your residents. I would also add to ask as many questions as you can when they do come into your room.
It's a tough call when you are bleeding. They try to balance the risks and take the least risky path, I suppose.

Hey Matt,

Dont worry. i may not be sure of how long you can hold you coumadin. But sure its true that blood clots at aortic position is low, reason being the blood flow at the aortic position is so fast that the blood does not have a great deal of time to hang in there and clot. :p take care. Good health. :)

Matt, its been a week and not a peep, are you alright? Hang in there. I will pray for you. What you have been going is hairy scarey. Hope everything is going ok for you now. Let us know something. Hugs for today. :)

Had my Aortic replaced in October 2011 bridged to lovenox had a hernia rectal surgrey done friday. Went home saturday ended in Er sunday non stop bleeding from rectum. Was rushed into surgrey Monday they wanna hold comadin/ lovenox for. A week I bridged tye correct way but they think I cut in rectum was irritated so they went in and stiched it.

How long is safe to hold off any antigolcant having a mechanical valve? Still in Hospital.

This is one of my fears in getting a mechanical valve. Yikes! Wishing you the very best and a speedy recovery!

I'd do what needed to be done and get your cardiologist in there. Excuse my language, but even if it means being an asshole! You need the proper people, not some dumbfounded nurse who hasn't the slightest clue to the potential risk they're putting you in.
