Making a decision on a valve

I was 51 also and my doctor suggested a porcine value. I went with what my doctor recommended. He's a top valve surgeon in the Philadelphia area and I figured he knew what he was talking about. He said that today they can last as long as a mechanical value. He told me not to believe everything...

    Pork roast in a crockpot

You can cook a pork roast on low in the crock pot for 10-12 hours. I'll sometimes put it in around 8 am and we eat relatively late - 6:30 and it is delicious...the meat just falls apart. There is a place in south Philly known for these pork sandwiches (Tony Lukes)...the roast pork, cooked...

15 months out - doing fine and looking to become a PA

Wow, John - that is terrific. I'm 51 and still don't know what I want to be when I grow up! My nephew is in school studying to be a PA, so I know it's not easy. My husband and I have put 3 sons thru college and still have another to go, so, as much as I would love to go, doesn't look like I'll...

    Cooker's weigh-in....Friday 25th April....

Can I join your list? Pleease??? I am 6 months post op and am feeling great...my only problem is I'm not losing weight and every time I go to the doctor, he says I should try to lose weight. Well, I guess I'm not very good about it - I go to Curves 2-3 days a week, but haven't been good about...

    Ironic observations

I have a couple of v-neck blouses and a necklace with a beautiful gold heart pendant that I wear with it. The heart lays right over the top of the scar and it's barely noticible. I only had surgery 2 months ago, and have yet to have a stranger ask me about it. Now, some friends have said "let me...

    Smoking

Mike - Congrats on your 2 days of no smoking! I was never a smoker, but both my parents were. My dad was one of those guys who quit cold turkey - from a non professional viewpoit, it seems to be the way to go. I hope you keep going, one day at a time. I often think if someone told me I had to...

    The dreaded first sneeze

Exactly! Interesting that I came across this today as I had my first sneeze today - 2 of them! My surgery was 10/22 and I managed to hold back any sneezes I felt coming. Today, they took me totally by surprise and I couldn't get to a pillow fast enough! Wow, that hurt! I am so thankful that...

dad's denial harder to deal with than mine was

This is what I was thinking - have your dad go with you to the doctor and ask the doctor very pointed questions about what you can and can't do. It must be so hard on you - I'm sorry!

    Stairs

cardio rehab? cardio rehab? Have any of you done cardio rehab after your surgery? The PT guy in the hospital recommends it, but i have to wait till I see the surgeon on the 20th. So far (3 weeks tomorrow) all I am doing is walking - I'm up to 15 min a day. I really feel like my upper body is...

    Louise's AVR next Wed.

Good luck with your surgery, Louise! It will be over before you know it. Somehow, I have managed not to sneeze since my surgery, 10/22. Don't know how I did that, but I'm thankful.

    Minimally Invasive Aortic Replacement

Adam - I had "minimally invasive surgery" for my aortic valve replacement - instead of a 10" incision, I have a 4" one. Supposedly, the recovery time is shorter too - I'm still working on that!

    Mechanical Valve Noise

I wonder if an Ipod or MP3 player with soothing music might help? I don't hear my valve, so cant help there, but when I have trouble sleeping, I love listening to classic music (mine has nature sounds in the background). Puts me to sleep pretty quickly.

    A fib

Sorry you are going thru this Kman! I bet it was a scary experience. No one wants to go back to the hospital! Hope it's smooth sailing from here on out.

    Pain 2 weeks out?

Went to the doctor yesterday - he basically said it was normal healing. He told me that I had major surgery and nerves and all that are healing and there will be some pain every now and then. Yesterday I felt fine. I just hope I don't have one of those days when I get back to work!

Pre-Op Visit with Surgeon - Check

That's a great idea! I have to admit, I was a bit concerned in that area. Glad my hubby didn't need to go looking for things. My husband used my cell phone to call my friends and stuff too. He wouldn't leave it with me in the hospital. My roommate had hers with her and it rang constantly...
