I'm sure I read somewhere that for some strange and surely welcome reason people stop sneezing after OHS ?
Here's the thing, I didn't, and haven't and it really really hurts !!
I get a two or three second warning of shear terror sweep across me when I know there's no stopping whats about to happen, I jump about, shaking my hands, bracing myself, even bashing my own nose but it's no good ... AHHHHH CHOOOOOOO !!! OUUUCHHHH !!!! It's like being wacked in chest from the inside out with hundred mile an hour hammer blow !!
I've had a cold (man flu!) for a week or so which has bought on a few of them but also all my life for some reason it happens if the sunlight catches my eye !?
Does anyone have any bright ideas on how to stop a sneeze after the two second warning ???
Thanks,
Justin.

If you have a two or three second warning, you should use it to hug yourself. Really. It helps to hold everything together. If you have longer, you could grab the heart pillow you might have received, but hugging yourself works too.

Grab a pillow if possible and hold on for the ride. What I hated was the rapid fire/successive sneezes. I swear I saw my ancestors laughing at me.

Thanks Bina, I'm sure were I to grab your nose and squeeze it a couple of times it would work for me too, sadly the Atlantics in the way !
I'll go with the pillow but I bet I still wind up weeping and foetal and praying it doesn't happen again !

Yes, it's all about grab and squeeze.;)
I think that I held off sneezing for just over 2 months, then I had a biggie sneeze just desperate for release.
Holy crap, that was bad....I screamed.

My system was good to me. I believed I only sneezed once about 3 months after surgery. It still hurt.
One method I find that works to STOP a sneeze is to gently rub the side of the nose where you feel the tickle, rub until the tickle is gone.........have your pillow handy in case you didn't rub long enough.

I can relate too!

I can relate too!

I don't know if anyone remembers but I went for a month or so without even spelling SNEEZE on the computer. Someone claimed they laughed so hard they about died when I said I hadn't "done that thing that you do with your nose and starts with a S and ends with an E and has a few Z's between" That may not be an exact quote but it is close enough.
Follow the PILLOW rule. Funny thing is ANYTHING can be a pillow in an emergency. (I used a rolled up towel (tapes so as to stay rolled) actually more then my heart pillow. It gave more support)
It took 45 to 60 days before I actually sneezed. Bout killed me then! I can't IMAGINE how bad it would have been in the hospital or soon after. GOOD LUCK!!!

Ugh.. sorry to hear you're not well Justin :( I've been really lucky in that I've only JUST needed to sneeze in the last week... which is kind of bizarre because prior to OHS I was sneezing at least 2 dozen times a day - often 3-4 times in one hit.

Anyhoo, I've found I've been able to stop a sneeze by pinching my nostrils together and kind of wriggling my nose around, then giving it a good blow.... repeat until desire to sneeze disappears. Having said that, however, I did progress to a sneeze a day or so ago, but rather than the huge AH-CHOOO!!!! that I usually do, I kind of "huffed" out through my mouth AND nose as it came and it ended up fairly mild.

In the meantime I've developed a really niggly tickle in the back of my throat which has me constantly coughing, and that hasn't been much fun :( Perhaps not as bad as sneezing, but it still hurts.

Hope you feel better soon and find a way to manage the sneezing.

A : )

If they gave you that big red heart shaped pillow! Grab it for take off! I could have not lived without it! I didn't understand why they gave it to me at first! My best day was when I gave it to my weimaraner and he tore it to pieces! and the breathing machine went to the garbage can!! Now that was a great day!

thought death was sure the first time I sneezed. when there's no warning, whatcha gonna do? it just happens. we do try to warn about the sneezing. it's really a surprise how painful it is, right? in a few months (!) it won't be painful anymore. that's no help at all, is it? Blessins..............

This method is 100% fool proof - I too couldn't stop sneezing - I had a few within a few days after leaving hospital and they were amazingly intensely painful :) I couldn't stop them - but then I discovered "The Technique"!!!!

The Technique:
As soon as you are aware of an approaching put your finger on the inside of one nostril (for me it was always my right nostril) and just rub the inside of your nose - the "inside wall" rather than the outside part. Rub fast if you need to - this stopped me sneezing for 5 weeks - I would estimate a total of 50 sneezes were avoided, someitmes in quick succession of each other :)

This technique works even at a tenth of a seconds notice.

Give it a try and let us know how you get on :)

Hey, thanks for that Dan... Very graphic easy to follow method ... I'm just having a practice, like a fire drill but a sneezing drill and giving myself a 2 second warning !
My new keyboard's getting a bit sticky though...
Glad you're on the mend.
