I liked the novella more than I liked the film. The acting stunk. My husband didn't like the film at all. Does that make him an immature chicken?

Blanche

Blanche,
Although I never read the book, I would tend to agree with you. It is a very campy film and the acting was so bad, it was good. As far as you husband not liking it, all that means is he too intellectually mature.:)

Ok,
I'm adding more. You all got me thinking!

Random Harvest (now That's an oldie!)
Somewhere in Time--thanks Blanche.
The Bridges of Madison County

RCB:
That's it! I'm not letting Al read this thread. It would just go to his head and mess it all up all over the place. **giggle, giggle, giggle**

On another thought, anyone remember "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir?"

Ben:
I wasn't sure I wanted to see Broke Back Mountain. But, after I did, I realized that romantic love is the same all over. To me, this was one of the most moving love stories that I have ever watched on the big screen. It is good to see true love portrayed as a special bond between people, not just stereotypes. It is a spectacular film, one that Albert (my husband of nearly 44 years) and I very much enjoyed.... This one will gain many awards.

I suppose that we just have different ideas about what makes up a "true romantic film." And, how dare anyone call this into question without an explanation? If you disagree, support your argument.

Kindest regards,

Blanche

I'm going to have to throw a new movie that I rented this past weekend out into the ring: Elizabethtown. What a quirky little love story, plus, I love the central KY setting. Check it out sometime. It's worth the rental.

Got to agree with Ben

Got to agree with Ben

Blanche,
Some feel "Lolita" was a great work. It is still about pedophilia.
I don't think you want to open this can of worms about people personal value systems. Otherwise, we can debate the "Passion of Christ", conservation vs.
liberal, Pro-choice vs. Pro-life, etc., etc. Do you really want to "dare" someone about their person beliefs? Please, let's not do that here- there
are plenty of other boards to do that.:)

Janie,
I love you, don't ever change- let's do lunch. I think I'll skip the hollywood thing- ok.

Dear Curmudgeon

Dear Curmudgeon

RCB:
You have to know that you are one of my favorite posters and I have enjoyed your intelligence, expertise, and wit since your first post. So, when you send me a warning, I am all ears, eyes, and mind!!! I know you have my best interstes at heart, and I do thank you sincerely for caring for me.

BUt, RCB, this isn't about pedophilia, which is against the law. I was replying to a post that said " How dare we consider this a true romantic film.?" I gave my opinion on the movie, which Albert and I saw, and the reasons that we two old duffs saw this as a "true romantic film." My sweetie and I didn't dare to consider Broke Back Mountain a true romantic film, we saw it and that is exactly what it was to us. This is not opening a can of worms, but , if it were Pandora's Box, I would say.....so be it...

I was replying to a post that said, "How dare we consider this a true romantic film? And, my response remains, "how dare anyone call this into question without an explanation." If you disagree, support your argument.

Yesterday died last night. Freedom of speech, with responsibility did not!

With the kindest possible personal regards and best wishes for the future..

Oh dear

Oh dear

The point I was trying to make was about sexual preference and personal people moral values. I think "Lolita" will be regarded as classic work, long after "Hollywood" has moved on to its newest agenda. Don't forget homosexual acts were once illegal in the US. Certain segments of the homosexual community want to make pedophilia legal- see NAMBLA website. The movie has a theme which is an affront to some people?s personal and religious beliefs. You surely must be sensitive to this. You may feel otherwise, but why started a fight by asking for an explanation. I have debated with the best of them, do you know how many people's mind I changed- ZERO. Do you think your going to change Ben's deeply held beliefs? There is freedom of speech here- nobody doubts that, but there is responsibility with that freedom to keep the discussion civil. All I?m saying is both you and Ben have your personal moral values; let?s not turn this in to another "Small Talk War." I don't think that is too much to ask.

Rest assured that everyone here has a position on this subject as we do about abortion, the death penalty, Bush, the war in Iraq, etc. There are also websites a plenty to discuss those topics. I think VR.com should neutral place
regarding those dicussions and save our arguments for heart valves.:)

You have me totally at your mercy

You have me totally at your mercy

I have no ideal what you are talking about, not do i understand what point your are attempting to make. What is NAMBALA? I was not dealing with an affront to people here....I am people here as Albert and I have been here for 5 years. What are you going on about? I am totally at a loss to understand what you are talking about and it seems to me that somewhere along you have just lost it all together. I'm not trying to change anyone's beliefs, and I resent you trying to speak for another.

This is an open forum and each person may say what they wish without fear of reprisals. Who the heck are you to try to censor me? "Rest assured that everyone here has a position..." Well, I certainly would hope so. And, I would hope that that everyone here would voice their position, when called for. You seem to be wanting to wage war over something that is just a difference of opinon.

My remarks were directed to a particular film which that showed that love can transcend all sorts of trials and obstacles. If you don't like that observation of mine and, may i say, my husband, then just forget about it.!! Hold your opinion and we will hold ours. You see, we do not have to agree to be friends. But, we do have to respect each others rights.

All of the other stuff that you have mentioned to clutter up the original guestion, are just that ...clutter. I wish I had not posted today, but, you can not bully me. You are the one who is making a mess of this. Shame on you. Try reading the "Bill of Rights" sometimeD!

Blanche

The post by RCB was quite articulate and I couldn?t agree more with what he said. At no point did he attempt to ?censor? you or launch personal attacks. He merely requested that you extend the same respect of other people?s opinions that you demand of your own.

NAMBLA is the North American Man Boy Love Association. They have been making the argument that love is transcendental of the confines of the mores of our society. In other words they want the majority of the population to accept their warped belief that love between a man and a boy is good and acceptable. This movie that you enjoyed, to many of us, has been utilized to further force the majority of the population to accept the beliefs of the minority of the population. This movie is being utilized for the further degradation of the morals in our society. Before you accuse me of being a right wing religious nut you should know that I do not believe in religion and I am a conservative (not republican).

The assault on the moral structure of our country by the left wing media that is Hollywood is an affront to many of us that believe in the judeo-christian beliefs this country was founded on and brokeback mountain is the epitome of this assault.

I am not stating any of this to start flame wars or criticize anyone, I am merely pointing out the reasons why this movie is offensive to some of us. This is definitely a topic that is better suited to one of the political forums then this one.

Of course I already regret having read this thread and I am certain my regret will only increase.

One question, please!

One question, please!

What's a movie???? (I AM going to get a life. I AM going to get a life. I AM going to get a life......................sigh!) :p

Since this has turned into a movie forum discussion about one issue, I have decided not to keep quiet (sorry to whoever). First of all I saw Brokeback Mountain mostly because it was unofficially censored in my area but finally showed up at my local theater. I have a real problem with some people deciding what I can and can't see so I went to see the movie just as a "protest" to that "censorship". I believe that we have freedom of speech even if I do not agree with the content.

Brokeback Mountain is a movie about 2 self-absorbed men who met a couple times a year for sex. They made everyone else's lives around them miserable, including their wives and children. Since the movie was set in a beautiful mountain area and had some great music, had a sad ending, and is about the current "Hollywood lesson material", somehow this movie has ended up being "Oscar worthy".

It makes no more sense to me than the fact that a movie like Chronicles of Narnia lost it's #1 rating at the box office to a movie like Hostel (which, if you do not know, was about people going off on vacation to personally experience torture)

I do not understand the direction Hollywood is taking but I guess I am just old-fashioned (and proud of it).

Duck!!! - here come the rocks. ;) :D

Gina, I'm proud to be old-fashioned also. So, I'll add an old-fashioned type movie to this group.

Shadowlands starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. Well acted movie, not fast paced, no sex, sad ending, but a true story. We saw it a few years ago and thought it was well done.

My husband had to work 14 hours yesterday so my Valentines evening was spent alone watching GHOST for the thousandth time. I love any movie Patrick Swayze is in. The pottery scene is so sexy and I cry every time.

Two people I care about.

Two people I care about.

Terry,
Sorry you couldn't be with your husband on Valentines Day.:( Any song by the Righteous Brothers can bring a tear to my eyes. I hope next year will be spent together!:)

Blanche,
I am still your friend and I do respect your opinion, the two are not mutually exclusive. In my attempt to keep things civil here, I have only succeded in making things worse. I'm sorry for that and I am sorry I have offended you.:(
