I worked in the oil patch for a while. My job was first run a small tool on a wireline down the open hole to find open hole size. The drilling superintendent provided the new pipe size. Then calculate the volume of cement needed to fill the hole, allowing for pipe size. That information was passed on to Halliburton or BJ, which ever was doing the job. Both were experts in their field. After the cement cured, we came back and run another tool to check if we gave them the correct information.
l feel that deep sea blowout preventers need better testing procedures or better blowout preventers.
