Oh, he's SO adorable!! I agree with the others...see if he's lost first and then, if he's not, keep him. Your other animals will adjust with time. Just give them lots of extra love like i did with Smudge, my cat, when i got him a sister, Miss Maggie Mae Pickle. It took him almost 2 months of hissing at her (and putting his face right next to mine and hissing at me too), but now they are the best of friends.

What a cutie! Hope it all works out well, Ann. We rescued a cute little Jack Russell terrier that was lost and about to get run over on a harrowing mountain road near here one day. We were tempted to keep her, but after several hours we called the county (she had a county license number) and they were able to give us the owner's number and we called. Seems the owner had driven off in his truck and she had gotten loose and tried to follow. I know it's tougher without tags, but as others have said, maybe there is a microchip.

Or maybe this precious dog is just destined to have a great home with you!

Oh Ann, he is so cute! From my posts here recently about my "Lady" dog you know I dearly love animals of any kind. I have also lost animals and it hurts as bad as one of them dying. When they are lost (or stolen) you never know what happened to them. I would try my best to find his owner and then after a couple of weeks I think you have a new dog!

Yes, be sure to check that he isn't lost. When I was a kid, our dog got out of our yard. After a few months we figured we would never find him.

A few months after that, some workmen building a home found him on a jobsite, without his collar and tags. He was only a few blocks from our house. They took him around to a few neighbors and they recognized him.

I don't know what happened to his tags, but I'll bet someone tried to keep him. How else does a dog lose his collar?

He's a shih tzu or cross. And yes, he needs a hair cut!

Definitely NOT an Irish Terrier. An agility pal of mine has an Irish. Irish look like Airedale terriers, but solid red, no black saddle, and about the size of a mini schnauzer.

we live in a country area where you know everybody and everybody knows you - or a friend does. I have called our radio (country store show where you advertise free - like a radio flea market) and reported it there. If someone hears it that knows of someone - who knows of someone - who has lost a dog, we will hear. The grapevine. I heard immediately from one person but she had lost a black/white dog. This is the best possible way to get/give into here. I will also call police and report.

He seems quite content here and doesn't let us go out/in w/o him and wants to stay in sight of a human all the time. I have read up on the net about shih tzu dogs and they are stubborn little things. we are finding that to be true. Daughter wants him and has named him Sebastian but in reading today, I find they are Chinese dogs so we might be in a spot there. We know no chinese! However, he isn't ours as of now; he just thinks he is.

Sweet little dog. It looks like my Shih Tzu Harriet, except she is black and white.

They were originally bred to be human companions. One of their traits is to stare at their human companions. I've had two of them, and they both did that.

They have a wonderful temperament, very loving and sweet. Harriet is much more of a "dog" dog than Boggs was. He was almost human. Harriet is quite dominate and thinks she is my boss!

If this dog is indeed a Shih Tzu, they can be quite expensive, so many are microchipped. You might want to have that checked out.

My first instinct would be to keep him & love him but, if he does belong to someone else, which by the way he is groomed, well-fed & in good health, indicates to me that he did belong to someone else & they are probably devasted as I would be & anyone of us would be, by his loss. He could very well be micro-chipped which I would have checked out.

Just between you & me, I hope no one claims him & he can stay with you & your family! I'm sure he would be the happiest pup around!

HJe looks like a purebred Shih Tzu to me. My Shih Tzu has a curly coat and she is purebred and papered. He also looks like he had a fairly recent trim, possibly within the last couple of weeks or so, especially around his legs.

His face and eyes need a trim.

Maybe some of the local groomers would recognize him.

So, he looks purebred? I was trying to think of what the mix would be called. I guess it would have been a shihtzoodle.

When I was growing up, we lived in the middle of nowhere. Dogs and cats were constantly being dumped (along with washers, refrigerators, etc.). We had a dog and 2 cats, but were always successful in finding homes for these "strays". Along with a string of mutts, we had a beagle and a poodle for awhile before relocating them. The neighbors kept a beautiful german shepherd that my brother and I had earlier witnessed being dropped out of a car. Anyway, if you live out in the country, it's certainly a possibility that the owners moved, no longer wanted him, or the owner died and those left didn't want him, especially if he doesn't have a collar. It's amazing the dogs you find in shelters. So many people treat their pets as disposable, even when they cost a lot of money.

I always figure if I had a male Shih Tzu, I would name him Bull, so his full name would be Bull Shih Tzu!

called out county police group (animal section); nobody reported a loss. Called my vet - none there either. Don't know of any groomers here.

He's a real handful. Very active and not very house broken!!! ugh

Daughter wants him; I can be happy with our Miss Sally Sue. Don't ever have to babysit her. This dog is like having a tot around - all the time.

Can you borrow a crate from anyone? Crate him when you are gone, as soon as you get home, put him out and leave him out there until you see him do both items of business. Male dogs have to mark here, mark there,...they don't go the same as female dogs. You could also put him out every hour or so if you are home most of the day, within 15 minutes after he has eaten, and then crate him at night.

he's still with us; no takers - wreaking havoc in his wake.

I tried the cage. He scratched, tried to chew the wires. Miss Sally Sue stays outside to avoid him. He tries to hump her and she hates him. He only comes up to her ankle! Cats are coming around, but slowly.

He really is cute but he's so active and interested in everything. Chews on stuff like shoes, slippers, a woven basket, magazines and chair legs! So we think he's just not fully grown. He brings in pine cones and branches for us to toss, even tho he has real toys.

He has been well cared for, judging by his hair cut and clipped nails. But we don't know what else to do to find his owner.

His name now is Sebastian.
