It WAS overkill, I got my Rx for Amoxicillin 2.0g 1 hour before and no coumadin check the next day.

I'm so glad I have this group here to double check with, Even though I'm involved with 2 other support groups, "The Zipper Club" and "Young at Heart"
They deal the most with by-pass pts. Us valvers have different needs.

Hi.
I take 3000mgs (6 x 500mg) amox or sometimes he prescribes trimox one hour prior ...then 1000mg 6 hrs after. I also have a 29 St Jude Mitral valve.
You mentioned you are using antiseptic wash...prescribed by the dentist? If so, you may possibly have a gum problem and your doctor feels IM is necessary and safer for you . I had a root scaling after surgery...and bled like a stuck hog... I was not informed to do anything different with my coumadin...so I didn't. It was not a pleasant procedure. I have never been told to have my INR checked after dental appmnts....this is news to me.
Dentist canceled my last cleaning appmnt...I need to re-schedule, but hate cleanings with a passion because of bleeding.
In my opinion....better over medicated, than under....but I'd definitely find out "why the IM". Coumadin people have to put up with a lifetime of "pokes"... and I don't know about you, but I would welcome a few less. Let us know if you find out the reason.

Terry and all,
I "do" have to "do" the IV meds for any dental... due to allergies to all the recommended antibiotics. It happens to a few of us. The only thing I am able to take that they say is acceptable is "Vancomycin".. and it is IV.. so that is that. Allergic to all the penicillin/related drugs, "most" of the mycins, cyclines... too many years of antibiotics.

With two valves, and a conduit, and a pacer/defib... I guess they are being very careful. I have been blessed with good teeth thank the Lord!
