Ross, Can you look online at the hospital he is at and see if there is a doc that only does Pain managemnet? and ask him to help Chris. I go to a pin mgt doc monthly for my back and he is one of the people that think if there is a way to help avoid it there is no reason to suffer w/ pain, Lyn

Once again, I am so sorry your son, Lynn, your self, and who knows who else, is going through this. One would think that the doctors could figure it out....both his physical pain, and his emotional pain.

No he's at Akron City, but someone from the Falls hospital would certainly be on staff. All I can do is try.

He's supposed to have the Ortho back in on the operation Thursday to pin a couple things, as his foot is moving in directions that they don't want along with the new grafting procedure. I suppose the Ortho will say he doesn't need pain meds then too?

I really don't understand why they can't use something like Novacaine as others have said. I understand why they want to be cautious about ingested or IV pain meds, but for Heaven's sake, there are other things that could take the edge off. It just seems so terribly brutal and sadistic to clean that kind of wound without SOMETHING.

Getting a pain management doc in there sounds like an excellent idea.

i've been so worried. haven't been on for a day or so_ compputer is on the blink_ and was hoping things would be getting better by the time i came back and checked.

about the pain, you and lyn must be beside yourselves wondering what on earth these docs are thinking.
nancy is right... even when we go for a simple skin biopsy, they give novocaine... this is so much bigger!!!

it really is too bad that the loudest screamer usually gets his/her way, but if that's what it takes....

we're still praying for all to go smoothly. thanks for the updates.

Ross, still watching here and praying and sending good thoughts.

I'm dumbfounded about the attitude toward pain exhibited by the hospital. If I were Chris I'd refuse the treatment until I got extra meds. Period. But I was pretty tough about stuff in the hospital. Also not unpleasant most of the time.

Hope all goes better tomorrow.

btw - Ativan made me crazy. Relaxes most people - made me hyper and energetic. I NEVER take it (I had it when I had chemo). Acted as an amnesiac, too - so I did stupid stuff and said anything and didn't remember. Yuck.

Frankly, if Chris continues being so abusive with you, I'd tell him so and walk out and skip a day at the hospital. You're too ill to listen to his guff, irrespective of how miserable he is. Perhaps your absence will convince him that his behavior's over the top.

Granted, the boy has had alot of Dilaudid over the last 2 weeks and I'm sure the potential for addiction is there, but lord, they have done surgery every week on him. He never gets a chance to relax from the last before he's being taken apart again. Why can't the clowns take that into consideration. We'lll deal with addiction if we must, but pain management at this point, is the top priority.

I left messages galore with alot of people today, including the pain team. I got NO calls back. Not a one. I'll be there in person tomorrow, so it won't be so easy to escape me.

Maybe the key is to use different painkillers that might be more effective. Get him off the percostuff and the dilaudillies and onto some other types that may be more effective for him.

How many times have we read on line and in medical periodicals that there is no reason for a person to suffer intense pain in this day and age; the knowledge to prevent is out there. How do we find the medical personnel who can pull that off!?

Dear Ross:

There MUST be something they can give him, that is less addictive than other medications. He truly should have something for the pain, but given the rampant addiction problem in our country, the Dr.'s have to be careful, not to trade one illness for another. But, there MUST be something and a pain mgt. doctor should know what that would be. What a horrid age for him to have to go through this. We will also be praying for you, and the family today. - Marybeth
