Glad Sadie is doing better. ..I was at the park this past weekend and saw a guy walking his Lab..on a regular leash..dog was right by his side.Guy was talking on his cell phone..Dawg enjoying the fast pace.....but I don't think you or Sadie are ready for that fast walking. He had the leash very short by his side.................I agree, Labs are too strong for the retractable leashes.........Sadie could jerk it out of your hand and the handle would fly right to her and hit her. ..I would think that just 3 walks after her meals..to do her business..is enough for now..(daily).....but, Dawgs..do like to walk a long ways to get their poop so, you need to walk her.. My Papillon has to walk to his favorite tree. about 5 minutes away.....So funny..but that is where he does his poop for the morning.A Hemlock.he loves to go underneath it....for private poop?. Danny, I do the grocery shopping and a lot of the cleaning, not to mention all the yard work. I just don't do the food fixin'. Wouldn't be fit for man nor beast to eat, and certainly not suitable for my Sadie lady.

Bonnie, I agree, we are going to be in the slow lane for a while. : )

Do you 2 know how to put a pot on the stove and boil water? there are lots of Boil-in-the bag..food...Especailly rice...do you know how to use a can-opener? Buy canned veggies..Drain the water off and add to the rice..Carrots, peas, green beans, ect...Mix and serve..Yummy....for Sadie..Not yall. Bonnie

Canned veggies usually have salt and sugar in it, soyou may want to water it down enough. Since this is for short term only it will be just fine.

I'm just catching up on this thread, I have two labs myself and it just about broke my heart to read about Sadie

But, now I'm all happy again Sounds like she's on the mend! I'll say a little prayer for a speedy recovery that's going to last!

What fun-loving guys, those two labs of yours! Can just tell from their expressions. Bet you have lots of fun with them. Thanks for posting their picture. When my techno-savvy kids are here for Mother's Day, maybe I will get them to take some of Sadie (who hopefully will be out of her sling by then) and post them for me.

As for food, I am no expert. I am learning something (on this thread as well as the one about pet food recall) about feeding a wide variety of veggies to dogs. I thought meat, protein, was the staple of their diet. Normally, we've fed Sadie Science Diet, both wet and dry, and she seems to thrive on it. But I am willing to learn. (Can-opener, boil water? What's that all about, Bonnie? ) I bet Bubba don't serve no home-cooked veggies to his dawgs.

Here's my 2 cents again

Canned veggies, WELL rinsed are okay for short term feeding.
Frozen veggies are better, more nutritous, and easy.....just microwave in a bit of water for 5 minutes.

I'm sure Sadie-girl will be able to enjoy her favourite Science diet foods.

Lynn, your Labs look great; I bet they are a handful!!!!
How do you keep that floor so clean??

I just read your thread about Sadie. I'm so sorry about what happened, but am glad that she is doing better. I, too, have a yellow lab. Her name is Abby. She loves to go riding in the car. Of course, we take her everywhere we go. We moved from Atlanta to Tampa when she was only 9 weeks old. She loved traveling then and still does. I know they make some sort of seat belts for dogs, but haven't tried one. Maybe we should look into it. I know it's hard not to blame yourself, but this wasn't your fault. Sadie knows you love her, and she loves you. That's all that matters. Best wishes for Sadie's speedy recovery. LINDA

I appreciate your kind thoughts very much, Linda. I hope other dog lovers will not make the mistake I did of letting their beloved dog ride in the front seat of the car. Of course, Sadie leaped from the back seat to the front on her own, as she often did, from excitement when we were getting near a favorite walking place. But instead of thinking that was cute, I should have taught her not to do that, or I should have pulled over and made her get back in the back. Granted, she might have dislocated her hip even if she had been in the backseat because of my having to put on the brakes suddenly to avoid the idiot driving the pickup. But she would have had a better chance, esp if I had thought to put some padding behind the front seat for her.

Sadie always had loved to ride in the car. She's gone with us on long trips, such as 7 hours to the beach, never complaining, always wanting to be with us. Despite the accident, she has no fear of being in the car. I've had to lift her into the backseat several times for trips to the vet since the accident. Hopefully, there will be fun trips for her in the future, but with her in the backseat and some padding back there. I have trouble believing there is a seat belt that would comfortably contain an exuberant lab but I will certainly look into it.

Since we have a MiniVan with plenty of room our dogs are put in dog crates. When I had a car and I used a doggie-seat belt which was O.K. but a bit cumbersome to put on. Not really an option for an injured pet going to the vet.

Lab Rehab

Lab Rehab

So many of you responded so kindly to news of Sadie's hip injury that I thought a bit of a follow-up might be in order. Took Sadie to vet Friday to have the sling taken off her right rear leg, and he recommended they keep her over the weekend to keep her quiet. I reluctantly agreed since we had a houseful of grandkids and Sadie surely would not have been still.

Picked her up today and got the rehab instructions: Walk her only small distances (yards, not miles) over the next four weeks. Do not let her run in the backyard after squirrels. Do not let her go up and down steep stairs. etc Keeping her slow and steady will give that hip the best chance to heal over the next month. After that, it is an open question with a bone structure such as hers how long it will stay in place. There are surgical options but want to try to avoid those.

So I am now a Lab Rehabber, as Sadie was a AVR-rehabber when I was on the mend.
