Hey everyone,

I am a marijuana user and saw some research online about people on blood thinners not being able to use marijuana? It seemed like the info/data was sparse, but the overall takeaway seemed to be it’s risky.

Anyone in here on blood thinners use weed and can speak from experience or convos with their cardio?? I know many of you drink with no problems.
 
Uhh... I was17 when I had my AVR. Got through college just fine. It’s been years, but the only real side effect I remember was some very risky trump card call ups in Euchre. However, they typically ended well. I could read the table. 😁

This is not to be taken as medical advise. 😬

Full disclosure. That was pre-home monitoring and I wasn’t terribly compliant about getting to the lab when I was first out on my own. I can’t really speak to any impact on my INR other than to say I survived without incident.
 
Many have reported no INR problems with pot.

Logically, unless you eat a lot of green leafy pot, there should be no effect to your INR.

Your biggest risk is probably getting so stoned you will forget to take your warfarin :)

If you get high regularly, your warfarin will be adjusted to match your body's metabolism, if pot did effect your INR the risk would occur when you smoke an amount very different from what you usually do.

its sparse because
  • most people don't use it, therefore research in that area won't help many people
  • most researchers already agree it (at the very least) not healthy
Before getting all worked up on the topic remember that smoking damages your cardio-vascular, that's your valve included.

I don't know anyone who wants to live a healthy active life who smokes dope regularly.

If you smoke irregularly then it will make no difference to your INR averaged over the year.

I know quite a lot of smokers and they all have health problems.

So pick which group has the important aspects for you and join it. If you get a mechanical valve and are therefore on warfarin I will suggest that like I have done you use your coaguchek and make measurements and write it up here ... for you are not the only one to ask about weed here.

By doing this you'll conduct research, learn a lot (such as research rigor) and perhaps help others.

you don't need to respect my opinion and I'm no guru. And if that was a wise crack / attempt at a passive aggressive put-down well please clarify it was and I'll just put you in my ignore list and you're gone forever. I've been patient and helpful for you for many posts now. I don't come here to get **** thrown at me for offering a helping hand and would rather help people who accept help.

If you supply data that contradicts my views I'll always listen with an open mind.

Indeed, Pellicle's perspective is spot on. My mother, who passed away in 2015, was a heavy smoker for 40 years, and finally quit cold turkey back in the early 1990s. I have her entire medical file from the time she was in her early twenties until she was in her 70s, which gives me an unusually unique perspective on how we can be dismissive of the health effects of habits when we're young, but, when given the opportunity, can clearly see the collective impact over the course of a lifetime. I have read the entirety of my mom's file, and what strikes me most is how many visits she made to see the doctor over those decades for issues related directly to her smoking (coughing, bronchitis, wheezing, congestion, general malaise, lack of energy, fatigue, etc.). Also as striking are the number of comments her doctors made in her files about their repeated, futile attempts to get her to stop smoking. Interestingly, it wasn't until she was in her 40s that the visits to doctors for all these symptoms began in earnest.

I've not noticed any diff in my INR. I enjoy weed about twice a month. Haven't smoked it in around 10-15 years though, mostly cook with it or vape occasionally. My Dr knows my stance on weed and has not given me any cautions relating to it.

Unlike my former cardiologist & this Dr or their nurses who have told me multiple times to be sure to cut down my drinking now that I am warfarin despite my telling them every time that my last exposure to alcohol was a beer back in 2002, only because I could not refuse a beer from the director of one of my favorite movies (The Kids Are Alright)! It's like the docs & their staff are programmed to dissuade drinkers and don't remember/listen/even fathom that anyone in this day & age doesn't drink.

P.S. Regarding the dangers of smoking, from what I understand cigarettes are millions of times more hazardous to your health than smoking pot.

Even so, as a general rule, lighting stuff on fire and inhaling the waste product can’t be good for you, even if it isn’t as bad.
 
I am 55 and have found edibles as a good solution. I grew up in CA and weed has been part of my culture my whole life. I live in the south now and it is a whole different attitude here. I do not have a mechanical Valve (I have a Inspiris Valve) so I cannot speak for INR. My whole life my older brother has smoked from sun up goes to work and smokes when he gets home. he is sharp, healthy and wise. I only use it now to sleep, and gummies are my choice. I will agree that smoking will effect your lungs, but I don't know anyone who has smoked pot their whole life get lung cancer. I know a lot of cigarette smokers who have and have CPOD. But not one pot head I know has it from pot. Smokers cough is common for older pot heads though.

good to know ... I can say that I do not speak here how I do in person (and even how I speak in person is different at work, to here in my local town, to when I'm dealing with non-native speakers in English in places like Finland or Japan).

I've learned that altercations can spark up due to misunderstandings due to culture and even the absence of facial or voice tonals. Thus when communicating here I try to keep things "neutral" - especially with vernacular like "dope" and "sick" having a great range of meanings.

Us older internet dodo's call it "the problem of ASCII"

you may be aware of some recent issues that I have had here, so please excuse my "knee jerk" reactions. Even Jesus "lost it" in the temple, having a little rampage and anger reaction...

I’ve been trying to figure out the same thing. I hate that I’m taking all these medications with all these side effects. Everything I’ve found online state that thc and cbd has its own anticoagulant properties and can also impact the effectiveness of the medication. I really wish I can find a natural blood thinning supplement such as CBD instead of taking warfarin. I absolutely hate it!
