I'm so glad that Al has been in touch with you. Everyone else has given good advice. Nancy and Blanche are the best at teaching and encouraging self-advocacy.

Carole,

I recommend that you get a letter from Dr. McGiffin addressed to your Coumadin Clinic in Montgomery where he describes your High Sensitivity to Coumadin.

Hopefully this will cause them to react appropriately and NOT try to use 'Standard Dosing Procedures for New Patients' as their guide. This is for your protection because some Nurses / AC Clinics like to believe that THEY know what is BEST for YOU and that Patients don't know or understand anything. I've dealt with some of those kinds of Nurses. I changed Clinics!

My current AC Clinic uses only Certified Registered Nurse Practicioneers (CRNP's) who have been well trained and seem to "know their stuff" along with respecting patients who understand their condition and how their bodies react to dose changes. Hopefully your Montgomery Clinic will have similar experienced Nurses.

Yes, but at this point, it's still questionable that she is that sensitive. We really don't know what's going on there.

I second everything Blanche and Nancy recommended,
especially about getting a consultation with a Hematologist.

Something is Very Strange with your INR readings and I'm not seeing good progress understanding and treating the problem.

As Nancy cautioned, you do NOT want to be released before you are Stable (i.e. more than ONE in-range reading in a row).

These are my thoughts right now. If my husband was in your place, this is what I would want and require for him.

I would want him home immediately and as quickly as possible. But, I would not take him home until: 1) the current situation is resolved, 2) a hematologist is consulted, 3) a firm diagnosis is made by or with the assistance of the hematologist, 4) a treatment plan is made with the blessing of the hematologist, 5) appointments at the Coumadin Clinic, with an explanation of your diagnosis are made, 6) A list, with phone numbers, of the people and places you are to call should you have concerns, problems, or issues. You are going to be visiting the Coumadin Clinic frequently in the next few weeks.

My heart goes out to you and your husband. But, I hope you believe that the worst part of this is over. What you need now, IMO, is the information needed to keep you safe and secure.

Next year at this time, when we are celebrating the one year birthday of your valve,I hear you saying that everything was great EXCEPT that one darned big bump in the road. Better days are ahead.

Carole,

Sorry to read about your latest problems at UAB. I seem to remember there was something they were trying to get lower but at the time I didn't know INR from ADAM. They were also chasing a sugar spike on me at the time.

I had the neck thingie until the day I checked out. They had beat my arm veins so much they went into hiding so I got most of my stuff thru my neck.

Make sure you take it slow and easy for the next few weeks. I had a four hour ride back home from UAB and I was told to take a lot of short breaks to get out and walk for a few minutes.

Good luck and look forward to the Post from Home.

May God Bless,

Danny :)

I am HOME!!!!! My INR was 3.9, they took the neck thing out and it actually didn't hurt at all.... The head nurse did an awesome job of removing it. It feels great to move my neck!! I have an appointment with the coumadim clinic tomorrow at 11. UAB spoke with them and sent over all my tests and that I am very sensitive to the coumadim which I will see what they and my blood say tomorrow. I wasn't able to read on here for awhile and now I see all the advice about a hematologist. I will see what they say tomorrow and what my blood is reading. They did say there are a few people that are just very sensitive to it. I feel pretty good, especially now since I am home!!!! I will post again after appointment tomorrow.... THANKS EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to know that your INR was stable enough for you to go home. I pray that everything starts looking up for you.

Keeping my fingers crossed that all is well when you go to your appointment tomorrow!:)

I agree with you, " There's no place like home...there's no place like home."

But, I will still bang the drum softly. Please get in touch with a hematologist. It will give you more information and peace of mind.

Kind regards,
Blanche

So glad you were finely able to go home. You have been through alot so now you can get some needed rest. Hope they can get your INR settled down and you can feel better with your own home testing. Keep us posted on what happens at your appt. There's no place like home!!

Carole,

I hope things get better for you. I know how you feel about pills. I am so sick of pills. I don't even want to swallow the vitamins.

Hang in there girl.....you will be home soon.

Welcome home! Praying for a quick recovery and praying to get those INR #'s stable. I always have problems with meds also, takes a while to get it straightened out.

So happy to hear you're home!
I hope you have better luck with the clinic keeping your INR in range... but I hear Blanche's little drum... some great advice coming from that incredible lady. I was sure inspired and moved.

So happy to hear that you are home. Now, make sure you are firm with the clinic and "don't take no crap". ;):D;)

Hon make sure you tell them about the antibiotics too. Sure, it's in your records, but those morons don't read them. I'm still thinking your body got a rather nice bathing in antibiotics and they haven't completely left your system, hence holding the INR up. I could be totally wrong too, but we'll soon know.

Welcome home and welcome to your new lease of life! Now, get out the hand bell, sit down in some comfy location, wait for your hubby to be at the complete other end of the house, then ring for him. Just for fun! :D
