The test from last night finally came back and it was 4.6..... I'm hoping when they test today it will be lower and I can get out of here. I haven't had any coumadin now since the 1 mg on Monday night..... This thing in my neck is about to drive me crazy and of course so is the hospital... It is a group of them watching me, they keep saying some people have a strong reaction to it and I must be one of them.....My appetite is picking back up....well going to get the utltrasound on tummy!!! Will post soon.......

This is not making any sense to me. If the last Coumadin you had was Monday night and it was 1 mg, it should have been pretty much out of your system by your test Wednesday night. I have never heard of 1 mg causing an INR of 4.6. Nor should have 1 mg caused your INR to go from 3.5 to 4.6, if the 3.5 was from a higher dose. Your INR from last night should have been close to 1 or slightly above.

Something really strange is occurring here and I don't have a clue. Hang in there.

What is not making any sense is the fact that she's had 2 units of plasma, which alone would have brought her down to nothing and they're still getting or giving numbers, which just cannot be possible. None of this makes any sense. I told Carole this morning that until she gets out of there and has a steady dose for one full week and then a test, we won't have any idea of what is going on. As it stands, I can only blame the hospital for not knowing how to dose Coumadin.

I agree that something is clearly wrong with this picture. After all that plasma, there should be no INR reading above 1.0. I am wondering if something is amiss at their lab. 1mg of coumadin should not make that much difference in so little time.

Actually I think she had 2 units of plasma 2 different days.

Back from tests still waiting to hear what they are going to do. From what I understand they are saying the level hasnt stayed down because of my body reacting to the initial doses? I haven't had any now since Monday night.... I'm really hoping when they test today it is lower than last night and they will take this thing out of my neck and I can see the clinic in Montgomery.... My right shoulder is hurting right now, like someone punched me in it, from reading other posts I'm guessing I can expect all kinds of aches and pains to come up with how the body was handled??? My appetite has picked up in fact I'm waiting on food right now and hoping it will be worth eating or John will have to go get something.... I don't understand how no coumadin since monday and still have 4.6 but that is what it read. They took the blood around 10:30 pm. Hopefully the doctors won't wait all day until they see me today. I ate steak out yesterday, shrimp, half a potato almost all a salad and part of a roll, which is me eating a lot,(was good too LOL) I'm hoping the salad will help the level come down as well when they test again today??? I will be very thankful when I can get home and monitor this thing!!! Post more soon!!

Yes, I took 2 bags of plasma on Sunday, and then 2 on Tuesday. I just had a nurse practioner here that was a REAL WINNER!!! NOT!!! Ok, I'm beginning to wonder if my level will ever go down, so they can take this dang thing out of my neck and get me out of here...... Ok, done venting for now!!!! Thanks for all thoughts!!!!

Oh they keep saying I'm very sensitive and the plasma brings me down fast but after it settles in the cumadim is still there and that is why it goes back up???? Like I said now cumadim since monday now and that was a 1 mg...... This is so frustrating!!!!

Carole, have patience......I stayed in for 16 days while my INR was carefully adjusted each day. And it must have paid off. There has been absolutely no problems at all with my INR in the past 3.5 years.
And yes, many of us have right shoulder problems for a while.
You may want to try a heating pad on a low setting once you are at home.

There cannot possibly be any anticoagulant left in your system by now. They have to be testing something, but it's not INR.

Been following your story and I'm sorry I don't have any advice. But I do have one question: Why and is this "thing" in your neck? Is it the line they used for the heart & lung machine?

What could it be??? They keep saying my INR is, then he said 4.9 is what it read last night and I haven't had any cumadim since Monday. He said I'm very sensitive but like I said this guy was a real winner!!!! .......... I wish it would just go down to normal...................................Thanks for the support!! I'm trying to be patient but it is getting very hard wha wha wha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need some food and pain medicine now too and that is not helping... Yep another wha wha wha!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Carole,
You can wha..wha...wha as much as you want. We have broad shoulders and big listening ears. I surely hope those hospital people get the facts correct real soon. Since I have tissue valve I don't take anti-coagulants. But I have always read and followed what Ross and others have said, so I would surely question what the heck they are measuring. I will pray that today's results are within their perceived limits and you can continue to move toward going home. :)

It is the port to draw blood from they have it out of the vein in my neck.. It has three ports... It is about to drive me crazy and of course it was a week yesterday that they put it in so it has been there awhile... I have to go take all my meds, yoo hoo!!!!!!

Carole, I am really glad to see your articulate posts, but very concerned about what you are going through. I wish one of us could run in and test you on our machine! If you have some GI thing going on, that might affect your INR. You have a good appetite, so that is a good sign, and I know the more I eat the more warfarin I need, so your levels should be down to around 1.0 as others have said. Also the more active I am, the faster I seem to metabolize it, and I need to up the dose. So as you start getting around more, you may have to up the dose. What do they say about your abdomen? I really wonder about their lab results. I hope you can get stabilized, and get out of there soon! Brian

Carole,

I'm like everyone else here, I can't understand what is going on with your INR.

It's pretty clear that YOU will have to learn as much as you can as Fast as you can about anti-coagulation management so that you will know if you are receiving good instructions from your anticoagulation manager(s).

I highly recommend that you start reading the "stickys" at the top of the Thread List under the Anti-Coagulation Forum, then browse / read through some of the threads.

One of the BEST Guides for learning to live with and on anticoagulation is AL Lodwick's Website www.warfarinfo.com He is a retired anti-coagulation clinic manager who now goes around the country teaching Doctors and Nurses how to manage Coumadin / Warfarin. He is a Registered Pharmacist and Certified Anti-Coagulation Manager.

Unfortunately, many of the anticoagulation "problems" we hear about arise for POOR management by managers who either do not understand how coumadin / warfarin works or who are operating from Outdated Practices. (The INR system was developed in the early 1990's and many Old Time Doctors / Nurses are still not up to date!)

You may also want to consider Home Testing (and later Self Dosing once you understand how your body reacts to Coumadin / Warfarin). There is another Forum on VR.com for Home Testers.

Hope all goes well for you.

Carole,

It sounds like you need some good comfort food from a great take out restaurant - hospital food will never make you feel better. Send your hubby out for food. Probably won't solve the INR problem but it will make being there a little easier.
