Carole those aren't INR numbers. I'm not sure what those are referencing, but it's not INR. Your INR would be expressed in a range from 2.0 to 3.0 or 2.5to 3.5.

And PT #'s would be about 20 - 30 or 25 - 35.

Please ask them what these #'s are referring to and if they tell you it's INR or protime numbers - please tell them that those would not be INR or Protime numbers.

If you had an INR or even a protime of 259 - you would have bled out of every pore in your body.

I'm concerned that they are dealing with something else. Are you taking any Coumadin at all?

This is Carole's brother Lee. Her INR is now up to 7.11 ( she forgot to put the points in ). They are about to give her two more bags of plasma to bring it back down. Still can't take out her neck port untill this number gets back to a safe range. Will keep posting updates as they arrive.

Okay - thank you for straightening that out for us.

Carole - I hope they get you straightened out soon. You're in my prayers.

Carole I know its frustrating when you think you're getting out and a complication occurs.I spent 5 extra days for a little incision leak.Hang in there and before you know it you will be home.Good luck in your recovery!! Jim

It sounds like they are trying to boost up the INR too fast and then having to "hammer" it back down with plasma.
I stayed in hospital for 16 days, but thankfully they let my INR have a chance to settle.

That's exactly what they're doing. Why these people will not understand Coumadin is beyond me. I mean, if we can "Get it", why can't they and they work with it everyday like we do.

The numbers still sound funny to me. My INR has always been expressed in tenths, not hundredths. Are you having blood draws or finger sticks?

The 1 mg of Coumadin wouldn't have caused an overnight change. Coumadin is slow...at least two days to see a result. There's something fishy here.

Good catch Lisa. You are absolutely correct about the 1 mg not causing that fast a reaction. I'm really stumped as to what is going on.

Can you tell us what dosing they are giving her? 5mg a day or exactly what?

I've occasionally seen INRs posted here expressed in hundredths. Perhaps labs will show INRs in the hundredths and all others are rounded to the nearest tenth?

I agree. I also wonder what the loading dose was. She's probably on several other drugs that are causing a surger in the INR.

They shouldn't be doing the old school loading dose thing anymore. It doesn't work obviously. It just shoots people over range.

I hope they get it in line soon to ease your mind. It's amazing the surgeries they do only to look like idiots in the coumadin dosing department.

That seems to be the only thing we've gotten right with my whole OHS. It only took me one visit to the doctor to get my level good.

Hey!!! I'm still at hospital..From what I understand they gave me 5 mg one night, then 2.5 for 2 nights then I had the big spike. THey gave me the plasma which made it drop and gave me a 1mg then it just climbed right back up. They said it wasn't from the one 1mg but from the previous doses.. After 2 more bags of plasma yesterday I went from a 7.11 to a 3.5 then today it went up to 4.9.. They haven't given me anymore cumadim and they just drew blood a few minutes ago. I'm hoping it is low enough I can get my neck port took out and go home, it has been in there a week now!!! Then I'll visit the clinic in montgomery until i get straightened out. They said I must be very sensitive to it? I am very bloated in my tummy which I hope is just retention , (it just happened all of a sudden last night) but they are doing an utltrasound in the morning to be sure, they did an echo gram this evening to be sure as well and thank goodness all looked good... I'm taking lasix, potassium, iron, nexium, a beta blocker, and was taking antibiotics. I think thats everything, I know I'm sick of taking pills..Hopefully I'll be posting from home tomorrow night!!! Thanks to all and HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!

So they are givng you different amounts every day? 5,2.5, 2.5, 1, O?
Plus FFP a couple times to drop it? Who is in charge of your coumadin? Can you ask to get someone else
