As a confirmed couch potato I was wondering if there might be any interest in a Couch Potato ThrowDown ... not a competition but just reporting in and supporting each other in a quest for more activity and better health ... I will never be a weight lifter, runner, jogger, downhill skier, row boater, the list goes on ... but I have started walking again and so far have stayed with it four days in a row ... I don't plan for my walking to evolve into a triathlon but I would like to make a lifestyle change and stick with it ... I also consider raking the yard as exercise and I'm sure there are other activities that you may enjoy that would be good exercise if we would just get off our butts and do it ...

We have a lot of athletes on Valvereplacement.org that I am sure will be able to give us advice on starting slow, what to expect, what to do about sore muscles etc we would welcome any encouragement and advice they might share ...

I started with a three mile walk that takes me about an hour ... really splitting the wind, not:biggrin2: ... I already feel better, sleep better and I'm hoping it will help me to shed a few more pounds ... speaking about losing pounds, this is not a weight loss thread ... it is just a thought I had that it may help people like myself to stick with whatever activity we may choose ... I need accountability in most areas in my life and keeping up with exercise is one where I definitely need a good prodding ...

If anyone is interested I purpose a weekly thread to be be posted in the Throwdown forum for us to report in and share out success and struggles ... just let me know ....

YES, I would like this. I desperately need to start walking again and quit with all of the excuses of why I can't, most of which lately have had to do with the terrible heat. But, if you can manage 3 miles a day in S.C., I can manage that in N.C. I just need to get my butt out of the bed in the morning and do it before it gets too hot.

Same here! Have to wait until it starts cooling down so that I can hopefully, resume my early morning or evening walks. (this granny has really slowed down in the last few years though! :))

Great response! We are on ... I will Start the Couch Potato Throwdown each Thursday and we can report what we did the previous week and hopefully keep the banter going ... I may even report my activity daily ... of course some days it may be no activity and unless I am on my death bed I want you CP's to kick my butt:thumbup:

OMG...it's already getting cold there? It's still August!

Sounds good to me. I start back to work tomorrow so I am going to struggle to keep exercising almost everyday once I start work. I have a stationary bicycle and hand weights that I use.

Cooker, why not try incorporating more exercise into day to day activities. I have offered a few ideas below.
1/ When shopping, park the car furthest from the shopping centre entrance rather than driving around look for a space closest the door.
2/ Walk to the shops if practical rather than drive.
3/ When inside if it is multi story walk up and down the stairs rather than use the lift or escalator.
4/ Walk up and down the stairs at work when travelling between floors if only going between 2-3 floors.
5/ Look for opportunities to walk rather than drive.

These are the types of things I do even though I work out 5-6 days a week.
