For those of you who have had surgery, how long were you on the ventilator?

I had my surgery in the afternoon and they kept me fully sedated until the next day. When I woke up the tube was out, gone.

    Weight loss after surgery?

I lost 56 pounds when I had endocarditis, a very effective way of losing weight but not really recommended. I have regained half of it as that was muscle from my legs and butocks. I would like to lose the weight again, but not that way.

What do you think caused your endocarditis?

I didn't have any problems with my heart, no rheumatic fever, nothing. Then I had lithotripsy treatment on kidney stones without any anitbiotic cover, I had three treatments and just before the second one they recalibrated the lithotriptor and I bled as it was so fierce. Eleven days later I...

Sternotomy concern or am I just crazy????

My surgery was six years ago and my scar is about 9.5 inches. The pain wasn't anything like I was expecting, coughing and laughing not fun for a short time but really not an issue. As for the scar, I bought tops which would cover the top of the scar and to be brutally honest what a waste of...

    Newbie

I'm with Lisa, I want them to have all the room in the world when tinkering in my heart. My scar is 9.5 inches and doesn't stop me wearing v-neck tops. Yes for the first month or so I was trying to hide it with tops which covered it but soon grew up and stopped fussing about it.

    Back I'n hospital endocatditis

Sorry to hear that you are back in St George's, but an excellent hospital and where I would want to be if I got endocarditis again. I was in St George's with my endocarditis under Dr Pumphrey and Mr Smith, then had my surgery in St Anthony's as BUPA paid, then they (BUPA) dumped me a couple of...

Pulse rate 45 - 54 ....mechanical valve, not fit should i worry

Unless you are on a betablocker I would have thought it to be too low. After my surgery I had heart block and my HR was low, I was taking digoxin and that caused the problem for me as I am apparently sensitive to it. My normal HR is more like 80 bpm, with a little exercise it goes up to over...

ok back in hosptal... fever chills.........

Generally feeling 'off colour' is how I was most of the time with my endocarditis, that was after an initial feeling awful period. I think they are wise to pop you back in hospital as a precaution. Which hospital are you in? I was in St George's, Tooting.

Pre-Medication for Visits to Dentist ?

In the UK (and here we follow them) the NICE guidelines say premedication is not necessary or desirable, however I am treated at our hospital for my dental care and after discussions with my cardiologist it has been decided that I can have antibiotic cover prior to treatment such as cleaning or...

feel a bit short of breath...

I am six years on and I am often short of breath, that doesn't make it right but I mention it to my cardiologist each year and he doesn't seem overly concerned and I must admit that I often wonder if it is anxiety causing it. I was in St George's, Tooting and also have ATS.

Can anyone share experiences? or offer advice?

The consultants are static, it is the junior doctors who move - heaven help you if you have an appointment in early August! It used to be consultants (most senior doctor and where the buck stops), registrars, house officers but now the house officers are F1 and F2 - foundation years 1 and 2...

Can anyone share experiences? or offer advice?

As you are UK I guess you have to go through your GP anyway rather than direct to the cardiologist, what is your GP like? Will s/he listen to you and your concerns? I know my own GP is brilliant and will listen and also won't take any chances with my health. Do you use Birmingham?

Ladies - What type of cover do they use when you go to the cardio?

For my echo the technician shows me into the room and asked me to remove everything from the waist upwards then get on the couch. He leaves the room and shuts the door then returns after allowing me sufficient time to disrobe and to get on the couch and under a blanket. He then returns and...

    Mechanical valves in elderly patients

If I needed a re-operation now at 63 I would opt for tissue so at 81 I wouldn't hesitate to have tissue.

    ATS Mechanical Valve

I have two ATC valves, aortic and mitral. I had my surgery in June 2005 and have been well since that time, in fact fitter than I was prior to developing heart issues. Medical staff have commented on how quiet my valves are, quite a bonus, I hope your wife has a nice quiet one too.

High school classmate refuses to undergo valve replacement . . . dies as a result

Years ago I knew a woman who needed valve surgery, she refused on the grounds that she was scared that she wouldn't wake up afterwards, madness. She was dead by 46.

Dental Extraction with INR at 1.9

I had a wisdom tooth out earlier this year with an INR of about 3.3, I didn't bleed at all. the dental surgeon put a stitch over the socket and it was fine. I took three grams of antibiotic an hour before.

question: do I still have a 'heart condition'?

A colleague of mine has had a quadruple bi-pass and has a defribrulator fitted, he travels from UK to Mexico every year for several weeks. His travel insurance just stipulates that although he can transit through the US he cannot overnight there.

discussing mechanical valve brands with your surgeon?

The evening before my surgery the sugeon asked me if I wanted mechanical or tissue, no brands were mentioned. I just said that as I was 57 I didn't really want a re-op at 70 so I guessed that I would need to go with mechanical. End of conversation.

    New 'super bug'

It has been on the news here in the UK about an antibiotic resistant bacteria which has been brought into the country by people having surgery in hospitals in countries such as India and Pakistan. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-10925411 Heaven only knows what would happen if one of us valve...
