Dad had a 1961 Oldsmobile Super 88 that I drove in the driveway as a pre-teen.
My sister's boyfriend had a gold VW SunBug and I drove that, I must have been 13.
Later on my Dad bought a 1972 Chrysler New Yorker and I got my real driver's licence....that car had a HUMUNGOUS back seat.....;)

Hey Norma Jean - I just knew you were a country gal like me..! I was raised on a ranch and in 1955 daddy bought a brand new 1956 Ford - black & white - just like Dayton's except it had 4 doors. Well, I couldn't stand it and so I asked momma if I could drive it around the ranch - of course she said, "Yes" - the 'pushover' she is..

So I loaded up my two little sisters, ages 8 and 10 and I was close to 12 and off we went. I rounded a corner and hit a corner post and bashed in the front passenger door...oh Lordy, was I scared. So, when we got back to the house I didn't park it in the garage, but parked it right in the drive so my daddy would see it when he came home.:eek2:

He came home, saw it and we were having dinner when he asked, "What happened to the car?"...:rolleyes2: I admitted it and he only said, "We'll fix it after dinner"...:biggrin2: And he and my brother popped out the door and all was well.

I added that incident to my daddy's eulogy at his funeral. It always meant so much to me and I learned at an early age that telling the truth is the easy way out.

My first car was a 1959 brown Chevy with those wings....same as Robthatsme..!
My first new car was a 1964 Ford Mustang...baby blue with white plastic interior...cost $2,700..:eek2: Hey, that was a lotta money in 1964..!! Sure wish I still had it..

Great thread Cort..!!

Through and through my friend!

Finally....here's a picture of it for you!

Norma Jean,
Thanks for the picture. It looks like it's in GREAT shape. And all shiny!
Also great that you worked while in school to make the down payment.
And I like your experience driving the John Deere.

Both our daughters worked after school and one bought herself a car. It was good for them. But they both refused to push their daughters to work. It showed up after they graduated, for then they didn't want a job.

Janie,
That was a neat story about the car and your daddy!

Holy cow ... fascinating experiences, and I'm glad so many of you shared!

*grins*

I think my "first time", was driving my mother's Ford Falcon wagon in the beach parking lot.Spring or fall of '65? I remember that the lot was empty, so I know it was off season. Next was a little Austin Healey that belonged to a brother's friend. My first car was a '58 Buick Special that had belonged to my grandfather. I wish I still had that boat!
