Simple questions:
When/Where was the first time you drove?
What did you drive?

For me:
August 1988, Holsopple PA
1979 Blazer (2-tone red/white)

While I was visiting my Aunt Thelma and Uncle Glen for a couple weeks, my Uncle Glen (who died 10 years later, the day the loan for my 1976 Monte Carlo was approved) took me with to do some errands. On the way back, instead of pulling into their driveway, he turned into the grassy field across the street, parked the Blazer and asked me if I wanted to drive. Naturally, I did. After that, my parents allowed me to move their '81 MC SC (now mine) out of the garage whenever we took that car.

Well, for me it was somewhere around 1964, in Chicago. I drove the family "second car" - a rusted out 1953 Studebaker. It was so twisted that we had to install plexiglass windows in the front doors to keep the original safety glass from shattering every time we rolled the windows up or down in the warped, rusted window tracks. You could see the road when you looked out at the bottom of the doors, so the rust was quite advanced. The kids in the neighborhood called the car "The Blue Tornado." It wasn't blue (it was a dull dark grey) but a mini tornado of blue smoke always followed it down the street as it burned its way through another gallon of "re-refined" motor oil. Quite a junk, but I had wheels!

The first time I drove was 1977 on private roads on a family friend’s farm.
I drove my fathers 1976 Ford.
I didn't drive on the road until 1980 when I was 17.
In the state I live a learners permit can’t be obtained until 17 and a drivers licence until 18 to drive on public roads.
No states in Australia issue drivers licences at 16.

Can't say for sure but probably was about 1945 when I was 10. The car was a 38 Ford Coupe. Lived on a farm, I was already driving the tractor. I was 13 when my brother started letting me use his car at night to go into town to the picture show. We moved to AR right after I turn 14. I drove all the way from TX, about 600 miles. My father didn't like driving. Not long after we arrived in AR mother went to the court house, got my dad and myself drivers license. They cost a dollar each and were hand written.
The little 38 Ford is in the background of this picture. The first car in the picture was my brothers 46 Ford.

My first car was this new 1956 Ford Victoria after doing 4 years in the USAF, I was 21.

The first car I drove was my parent's 1963 Thunderbird.

The first car I bought for myself was 1967 Mustang convertible.

Wish I still had both those cars. :)

First real driving was in Michigan--old US 131 (it wasn't "old" then), coming back from my grandparents. I was 15 and had my (new) permit, so my dad let me drive the family car--a 1972 BelAir "woody" station wagon. My dad gave me some good driving advice that day that, looking back, is good life advice.

"If you look at the oncoming traffic, you'll over-correct and run off the road. Look past what's coming toward you, and focus on where you're heading for."

Wise man, my dad....

I was 14 when I was allowed to drive an old Army jeep that we kept at our summer vacation place in central Wisconsin. I had two miles of dirt road all to myself, and I kept the dust stirred up driving back and forth on. It wasn't easy to shift, so once I got it moving, I kept it in motion.:wink2:

For me it was summer of 1966, a 1960 Chevy Impala. My mom's car. I was only 15 on back roads. Finally got drivers license in 1968 and promptly bought a Candy Apple Red 1957 Chevy Bel-Aire, dual exhaust and thus my need for speed began. Wish I still had that car. I truly miss it.

Hi,

Ther first time I drove was in 1965, when my dad taught me to drive so that I could get my license.
That was in Stoughton, MA, and it was a 1964 Corvair Greenbrier Sportswagon. It was a van with a Corvair engine in the rear. What fun for a teen to have a van to drive!

The next car was a 1959 Chevy Bel-Aire. It even came with "wings". Hmmmmm.. now I know why they called those "Aires" they did get airborne! :)

The first time I drove alone was my mom's mustang in the pouring rain. I didn't end up anywhere in particular I just drove around. I remember feeling free but nervous too. I felt the same way two weeks ago when I drove for the first time surgery, but maybe more nervous.

First time I drove was during the summer of 1968, right after I got my learner's permit. Backed out of the driveway and drove around the block a few times. It was in my dad's 1964 Chevy Impala convertible. Wish I still had that car.

After I had gotten my license and had been driving for a few months I was eventually trusted with the new Oldsmobile 98 when I went out on dates. It was dark green and I affectionately referred to it as "Sherman" (as in Sherman tank).

My parents always said that I was the most mischievous child they've ever known & well, I guess they had good cause......:rolleyes2:

We were raised in the country on a small farm, far away from the glamour of the BIG city. We didn't have much for entertainment to speak of, other than the entertaintment we created ourselves.
One day, my parents had to go to the city and left my little brother and I at home. I must have been 11 or 12 years old; my brother about 8 or 9.

Well, my father had this little John Deere tractor that I found so intriguing and I just longed to take it for a ride. :biggrin2:

As soon as we lost sight of my folks going down the road, I saw our chance! :smile2: I asked my brother if he wanted to go for a ride & of course, he was ready. So I started the tractor up exactly the way I had seen my daddy do it many times before. My brother climbed on the seat behind me and off we went.

I drove it around & around the field a few times, waving at the neighbor as he went by. He just shook his head & gave me the "you're gonna be in BIG trouble" signal with his hand as he kept glancing at us through his rear view mirror! And he was right! :eek2:

You see, when I drove the tractor, it had an implement, a cultivator attached to it! So everywhere I drove it, the cultivator dredged and dug up anything my daddy had planted there!!!! :eek2::frown2:

Needless to say, I was in BIG, BIG trouble when they got home. I think I was grounded for years after that and got a good whipping!! :frown2:

I didn't drive again until I bought my first car in 1969.....a white, 66 Volkswagon Bug that I still have garaged in my house! :smile2:

It would have been in 1965, when I was 13. I drove a WWII Willys Jeep we had around in the back fields of our 32 acre farmstead home and even built some roads for it through the woods. It was extremely forgiving, and could be started from a complete stop in any gear. The wheel hubs could still be locked.

We had an older, white studebaker and I think a brown, Chrysler Saratoga (could be wrong) for "real" cars. I didn't get to drive those.

Best wishes,

Oh, THAT first time. :p

I remember my first car -- bet this is unique --- it was a Hillman Minx, a little British convertible; was olive-green like an Army vehicle and in fact looked like a small tank. Was so lightweight that one day my buddies carted it off to a hiding place before I got out of school.

Norma Jean that is really neat to still have that car after so long!

Thanks Dayton! Yes, that car holds a lot of sentimental value to me.

I worked waitressing jobs after school throughout my senior year just so that I'd have enough money for a down payment! And although it wasn't brand new nor anything fancy, I sure felt proud when I drove it off the car lot that afternoon!

.....I tried uploading a picture of it but wasn't successful! Sorry! :frown2:

Finally....here's a picture of it for you!

Hey Norma Jean - I just knew you were a country gal like me..! I was raised on a ranch and in 1955 daddy bought a brand new 1956 Ford - black & white - just like Dayton's except it had 4 doors. Well, I couldn't stand it and so I asked momma if I could drive it around the ranch - of course she said, "Yes" - the 'pushover' she is..

So I loaded up my two little sisters, ages 8 and 10 and I was close to 12 and off we went. I rounded a corner and hit a corner post and bashed in the front passenger door...oh Lordy, was I scared. So, when we got back to the house I didn't park it in the garage, but parked it right in the drive so my daddy would see it when he came home.:eek2:

He came home, saw it and we were having dinner when he asked, "What happened to the car?"...:rolleyes2: I admitted it and he only said, "We'll fix it after dinner"...:biggrin2: And he and my brother popped out the door and all was well.

I added that incident to my daddy's eulogy at his funeral. It always meant so much to me and I learned at an early age that telling the truth is the easy way out.

My first car was a 1959 brown Chevy with those wings....same as Robthatsme..!
My first new car was a 1964 Ford Mustang...baby blue with white plastic interior...cost $2,700..:eek2: Hey, that was a lotta money in 1964..!! Sure wish I still had it..

Great thread Cort..!!
