Kameron, my grandson in my avator..had another bad case of stomach flu..Wed. night..vomiting, high fever and stomach cramps. Took him to ER early Thursday morning.. In ER again for 9 hours..getting tests, pain meds and fluids..Doctor said his blood count was borderline with having appendicitis. Cat scan was normal. After about 9 hours..we brought him home with instructions to bring him right back if he got worse...He was a little better today..Still having stomach cramps. Had to drive home and feed cats..but will go back down tomorrow. He was in ER before Xmas with same thing....scares the wits out of all of us.. The BUG is bad this year for little ones.     Bonnie

I don't think it's a bug, I think he really does have appendicitis! There is no way you could convince me that he had stomach flu 2 times this close together.

Bonnie, three months ago my son-in-law took my very sick 50 yr old daughter to the hospital emergency room for abdominal pain , nausea etc. They did a CAT scan ,sonogram , and blood tests and then the ER doc said " take her home". She was terribly sick and my poor son-in- law was beside himself when an old friend walked in the ER. It was Warrens PCP, an experienced internist, and former chief of staff. Warren told him the story and he went in and examined my daughter He said she had "rebound tenderness" and probably had a ruptured appendix. He called the surgeon and she was operated on within the hour. Yep, it was a ruptured appendix with generalized peritonitis. She had a tough recovery but is OK now. The moral of this story is even though we have all these lab tests and CAT scans and sonograms nothing beats a good doctor listening to the history and then doing a thorough physical exam.

I agree Marty!
My 11 year old son came down with appendicitis. My husband was familiar with the rebound test and we felt pretty certain of his diagnosis when we took him into ER. We were at the hospital during a shift change so he was evaluated twice with the same conclusions. When the DR asked if we wanted an ultrasound to be conclusive we didn't see the point. They were able to remove the appendix prior to complications and he was able to return home 24 hours later.

P.s. we were also able to look up the symptoms on the internet and thus he had the other symptoms as well as the rebound test. What first alerted my suspicions was that he was complaining of central pain originally then as it progressed in the night the pain moved to the right. It wasn't until I looked it up that was considered and actual symptom.

On a side note: Jase had baseball practice that day. The morning he said he wasn't feeling well so I suggested missing practice. He insisted on going anyways. I didn't find out until later that he told the coach during that practice that he may not make the first game of the end of season tournament the next night because he thought he was coming down with the flu. the coach gave him a hard time and said you better be there (my son is the catcher)
During the night we took Jase to ER. Coach felt bad about dismissing Jase's complaints. I don't know why? My son doesn't miss baseball for just anything! LOL

Bonnie,
Sorry to hear about the frightening experience with your grandchild. I, for one, would be paying close attention to the advise of some of these knowledgable folks. Better safe than sorry and you wouldn't want to risk a ruptured appendix. Keep us posted!

Update on Kameron

Update on Kameron

Well. it finally happened..at 7 a.m. yesterday morning..he awoke with excruciating pain...He had been house-bound for 5 days..we were watching him..NO fever, No nausea.....just still having mild stomach cramps. Had not been back to school...Then..he started crying..help me Granbonny...Daddy had left to go to work. Hubby and I put him in car..drove 1/2 mile to Firestation and 15 firemen ran outside. I explained what had been going on..they all knew his Dad..put him in ambulance. Rushed him to hospital. I called his Daddy..He was there in 30 minutes..Doctor brought surgeon down..said Let's do it. Prepped him for appendix operation. Went in to op..room..they called in an hour and we waited another hour for him to be brought back to room..awake..but in pain. They gave him darvacet..but then morphine later...His real Mom was called and she arrived as they brought him back to room. She stayed with him last night and they brought him home this morning. Put him to bed.. His Mom will stay with Kameron and my son until Sunday. I came home for some much needed rest.....Son just called and said he was sleeping..and they would give him darveset every 4 hours... Doctor said his appendix was a little longer than normal..but they looked around and said everything else looked normal.....He was normal acting during the past 4 days...just mild stomach cramps...All the other doctors kept telling me it was viral.  He will be out of school for awhile..but it is going to snow tonight and tomorrow..so I'm sure the schools will be closed for rest of week. Helps with his being absent for so long:D :D I will go back Sat. morning ..and stay next week. Thanks to all who posted. Bonnie

Oh Bonnie-

I am so relieved that the appendix is finally gone. But along with that I am also angry that your grandson had to suffer because his doctors did the wrong thing. When he went into the ER and the doc there mentioned that his blood count was borderline appendix, why-oh-why didn't they follow up with a more intense examination and why did they send him home with a diagnosis of virus. I mean the thing was just about staring them in the eye.

It could have ruptured and he could have been in grave danger. I hope someone in your family will have a sitdown with them and find out what their reasons were for what was done.

Thank God he's out of danger. I worried when you weren't online for a while, and thought something was amiss.

You take care of you now. Get some rest.

Thinking of you all, Bonnie.

For Kameron:

Hey there Kam. Wow, you have been through something really strange, haven't you? How'd you like the ride in the ambulance. Hope you weren't hurting too much to hear the sirens. I bet the ambulance crew treated you really special, didn't they. It's nice to hear that you are home again and feeling much better. Nice to have your mom and dad to take good care of you, and your grans, too. I hope you get well really soon. You are a strong boy, so I know you will be back at school in a hurry. You don't want to miss anything that's going on.

Love, Miss Ann

Hey Bonnie,
I am sorry to hear the problems your grandson is having. I hope they get everything taken care of.

I hope you are holding up OK.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Take Care
