Will the Swine Flu become pandemic?

Just to be clear, even though the child died in Houston, it wasn't from Houston. It had been transported from Brownsville, a small border town, and in fact was a Mexican citizen. It's unclear whether the child resided in Texas or Mexico, but definitely had been back and forth, probably not legally. The doctor/hospital gave no details regarding the medical treatment this child had prior to death, but I get the idea it hadn't been in Houston long, especially since as of yesterday, we still had no confirmed cases in Harris County. Doesn't make the death any less tragic, but there have still been NO American deaths.

I want the government to get tighter control on the borders, but it has nothing to do with swine flu. It has to do with money and laws. Too much money is being spent and too many laws are being broken.

Lisa, I agree with you 100% on the above post and your other post in this thread!
But I highly doubt the government will do anything with our Mexican border.

We've stopped going to our local Mexican restaurants.

Hola de Mexico..!!

Hola de Mexico..!!

Well, I have to admit that I just scanned this thread since we are in Mexico as we speak. Yep, and I have never in my life had a flu shot, just do not believe in them. Guess I have been lucky...and I credit my good immune system with that. Good thing about this trip is that over 200 Mexican teenager dancers from Mexico DF checked out of the hotel early...:D Can you say "peace and quiet"...and an empty swimming pool.

We use good common sense, do not get alarmed easily. Shoot, I was in South Africa and Keyna and never got Malaria and still wonder if it was the Larium...that stuff was tough...recalled now me thinks.

Enjoy life folks and never sweat the small stuff....back to the playa y las Margaritas..:D

It might even be here in this small island already.

A family have been placed in quarantine here in this island, the authorities have told them not to leave their home until Tuesday, also staff at a bank where one of the adults works have been given Tamiflu.

A statement will be made in the morning by the Public Health Department.

The instructions to people here who think they might have this flu is to stay at home and call a doctor for an emergency home visit. The Public Health Department have started supplying the GP practices with Tamiflu.

So if a person has flu symptoms in the US are they expected to visit a doctor and therefore risk spreading the virus further?

Hello Lisa,

I second that line of thought!! Being a Texas, I especially want to see ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION STOPPED. I want tighter, stricter border control! Hey folks, I thought we were a sovereign nation! We've been brainwashed, by some of our politicians, and media into thinking it's okay to keep letting millions of Mexican Nationals into our country this way. If the US speaks up, or tries to do anything, we are the bad guys!!! I'm sorry, but what about the Mexican government??? They do nothing from what I'm seeing for their people. It is their responsibility. not ours. The American people are some of the most forgiving, tolerant, and GIVING people in the world, and I am sick of us getting the blame!!!

Norma, he is actually headed to go fly fishing in a certain country in the caribean that Americans aren't supposed to travel to...SHHHHH. He has been planning this trip for over 6 months. He has to fly to Mexico to change planes to get there. There is no way he will cancel unless that country stops letting flights from Mexico in? Who knows, we shall see!

I'm really not worried about him...he is as strong and healthy as a horse and he has spoken to the Dr's travelling with him and they are bringing enough drugs to keep them all healthy for a while. I just won't let him near me when he gets back.

Kimmie

Looks as if they have already stopped flights from Mexico.

I am concerned about kids

I am concerned about kids

Adults can wash their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds throughout the day, but trying telling that to a 6 year old. The Kindergarten kids are just all over each other at recess and it's really impossible to make them practice the safety needed. I am very concerned about my son. A lot of people from the Bay area go to Mexico for spring break. My co-worker just came back from Mexico City. Already there is a school shut down here. I am hoping there won't be a large epidemic here.

I think it is more serious than they are letting us know. There is more to this story about where this has come from. The USA needs to close our borders now. I though I was told valve replacement patients can not take that tamiflu stuff? has anyone else heard this before? That would not be a good thing :(

I have heard this too from a cardiologist I used to have many years ago. Anyone else heard this??

Swine influenza - update 5
29 April 2009 -- The situation continues to evolve rapidly. As of 18:00 GMT, 29 April 2009, nine countries have officially reported 148 cases of swine influenza A/H1N1 infection. The United States Government has reported 91 laboratory confirmed human cases, with one death. Mexico has reported 26 confirmed human cases of infection including seven deaths.

The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Austria (1), Canada (13), Germany (3), Israel (2), New Zealand (3), Spain (4) and the United Kingdom (5).

Further information on the situation will be available on the WHO website on a regular basis.

WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders. It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities.

There is also no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.

I am part pig. A pig supplied a vital component of me. Only reason I would quit eating pork is to avoid being cannibalistic. You cannot catch flu from what you eat.

As for other dietary considerations, I enjoyed $1 taco night at our neighborhood Mexican restaurant this Tuesday and plan to go again next Tuesday. I hear that Margueritas immunize you from all potential perils. :D

Hi All,

I called my cardio with the tamiflu question. It's definitely OKAY FOR VALVE PATIENTS TO TAKE ALL THE FLU MEDS.

Swine influenza
Ladies and gentlemen,

Based on assessment of all available information, and following several expert consultations, I have decided to raise the current level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5.

Influenza pandemics must be taken seriously precisely because of their capacity to spread rapidly to every country in the world.

On the positive side, the world is better prepared for an influenza pandemic than at any time in history.

Preparedness measures undertaken because of the threat from H5N1 avian influenza were an investment, and we are now benefitting from this investment.

For the first time in history, we can track the evolution of a pandemic in real-time.

I thank countries who are making the results of their investigations publicly available. This helps us understand the disease.

I am impressed by the work being done by affected countries as they deal with the current outbreaks.

I also want to thank the governments of the USA and Canada for their support to WHO, and to Mexico.

Let me remind you. New diseases are, by definition, poorly understood. Influenza viruses are notorious for their rapid mutation and unpredictable behaviour.

WHO and health authorities in affected countries will not have all the answers immediately, but we will get them.

WHO will be tracking the pandemic at the epidemiological, clinical, and virological levels.

The results of these ongoing assessments will be issued as public health advice, and made publicly available.

All countries should immediately activate their pandemic preparedness plans. Countries should remain on high alert for unusual outbreaks of influenza-like illness and severe pneumonia.

At this stage, effective and essential measures include heightened surveillance, early detection and treatment of cases, and infection control in all health facilities.

This change to a higher phase of alert is a signal to governments, to ministries of health and other ministries, to the pharmaceutical industry and the business community that certain actions should now be undertaken with increased urgency, and at an accelerated pace.

I have reached out to donor countries, to UNITAID, to the GAVI Alliance, the World Bank and others to mobilize resources.

I have reached out to companies manufacturing antiviral drugs to assess capacity and all options for ramping up production.

I have also reached out to influenza vaccine manufacturers that can contribute to the production of a pandemic vaccine.

The biggest question, right now, is this: how severe will the pandemic be, especially now at the start?

It is possible that the full clinical spectrum of this disease goes from mild illness to severe disease. We need to continue to monitor the evolution of the situation to get the specific information and data we need to answer this question.

From past experience, we also know that influenza may cause mild disease in affluent countries, but more severe disease, with higher mortality, in developing countries.

No matter what the situation is, the international community should treat this as a window of opportunity to ramp up preparedness and response.

Above all, this is an opportunity for global solidarity as we look for responses and solutions that benefit all countries, all of humanity. After all, it really is all of humanity that is under threat during a pandemic.

As I have said, we do not have all the answers right now, but we will get them.

Thank you.

I'll tell you folks, the more I hear concerning this virus, the more tempted I am to cancel my trip to Houston.

On the news yesterday, they were urging people that if they felt ill, NOT to get on an airline & expose other passengers, but how many people are going to actually heed this warning??

El Paso is a border town -- there is where we have to depart for Houston. Hummmm.........

Here is the full article from the LA Times.

As the World Health Organization raised its infectious disease alert level Wednesday and health officials confirmed the first death linked to swine flu inside U.S. borders, scientists studying the virus are coming to the consensus that this hybrid strain of influenza -- at least in its current form -- isn't shaping up to be as fatal as the strains that caused some previous pandemics.

In fact, the current outbreak of the H1N1 virus, which emerged in San Diego and southern Mexico late last month, may not even do as much damage as the run-of-the-mill flu outbreaks that occur each winter without much fanfare.

EDIT: Had the wrong tab open and copied the link to my own post. Oops. I have corrected it.

BTW...the one confirmed death in the USA was a nearly 2 year old boy who died in a Houston hospital. He was visting Houston but lived in Mexico City and most likely had the virus already when he entered the country.

I'm still taking this outbreak seriously...just trying to keep the level of panic low...at least at this forum. Truth be told though...if I had a trip planned to Mexico (especially Mexico City) I would probably be canceling myself as that seems to be ground zero of the outbreak.
