Wildlife in your area

I was wondering what wildlife you have in your neighborhood or close by.
In the past week or so, I have seem a mama turkey with her little brood of chicks, a mama deer with her fawn, and our neighborhood fox.

We have loads of birds, because there are so many trees. So bluejays, cardinals, crows, chickadees, robins and hawks are common, quite a few hummingbirds too and the owls that hoo-hoo in the evening and morning.

In the yard, we have lots of birds, incuding red-bellied woodpeckers, hawks and vultures. Wild turkeys show up now and again. We have lots of deer (including an 8-point buck in full velvet). We also have foxes, rabbits, and groundhogs.

We have fox (have pictures of one sunning itself in our backyard a few years ago), coyote (nearly hit one with my car last week), ducks, geese, deer (my husband did hit one with his car several years ago), possum, raccoon etc etc.

And did I mention we life smack dab in the middle of the Chicago suburbs????

My Hummingbirds We have one bald eagle that must have a nest near by. We also have some damaging woodpeckers and lumberjacks....

Female deer in our front yard every dawn. We live on a river so we have an occaisonal great blue heron. In past years, we have had family of fox with kits, and when mama takes them out at dusk to play, it is the sweetest site!

On the first day of school last year, we pulled out of our driveway and had 2 timerwolves to the left of the car. We stopped, and waited....they didn't budge. We had to leave to make it to school on time. NOT skiddish creatures at all. We have brush wolves also, but we don't see them as often. Brush wolves are the ones that appear to get hit by cars.

Our home had no owners for about a year prior to when we took ownership. The first week we were here, I did get an eye-full of a moose. This was now about 10 years ago, with no further sightings.

The ground squirls keep our Golden Child Retriever quite busy Did I mention we live on 70 acres 30 miles of nowhere , hehehe.....

We are surrounded on all sides by fenced in yards with dogs, so we have few mammals that frequent our yard (rabbits are plentiful but so are the squirrels . Before the neighborhood grew, deer, quail and foxes were common visitors.

Now we've exchanged four-legged visitors for birds and butterflies.

We host mourning doves, cardinals, hummingbirds, nuthatches, goldfinch, wrens, downy, red-bellied, and red-headed woodpeckers, mockingbirds, grackles (which I truly dislike), red-winged blackbirds, catbirds, Carolina chickadees, American robins, a red-winged hawk, occasional blue jays, and a slew of generic sparrows.

Over the course of the summer months, different butterfly species frequent the butterfly bushes I have planted. I haven't tried to seriously identify them, but maybe I will when the heat lessens.

Oh, and then I have five kids, plus two spouses, that come and go on a regular basis. Does that count as wildlife?

Where I come from that definitely counts as wild life.

The Greater Katy Area is a suburb of Houston that now supports 6 high schools, each with about 3,000 students. Most of Katy is pretty new and was built on former rice fields, so there aren't a lot of natural trees, just those planted by developers. Our wildlife is mostly birds, tree frogs, and ground critters. Geese and ducks are plentiful in the area too. And of course, mosquitoes!!!

In the front of my sister's neighborhood, there is a large manmade pond with fountains. It has fish in it and my nephew spends a lot of time fishing there. Last weekend, he ran home to report that he had seen an alligator. My sister and BIL half believed him and went to investigate. Sure enough, there was a 3-4 foot alligator, probably dumped by someone who kept it as a pet until it got too big. A neighbor called the local wildlife people and they assume that it got taken away as they haven't seen it since.

We take the kids out almost every weekend to go hiking, biking or canoeing, we see all sorts of wildlife, deer, snakes, lizards, birds but my favorites thus far are the black bear and the bald eagle, we saw it flying around for a while and then saw it fly by with a bird in it's claws, the boys still talk about that one.

Here is Australia we live next to a National Park and our yard at dawn and dusk sees many kangaroos and wallabies. Our yard is littered with kangaroo droppings and yesterday our 17 month old decided to do the taste test before I could stop her...her face was priceless! I don't think she'll be trying to do that again in a hurry!

We also have sheep and chickens (as pets) and beautiful wild birds...rosellas, cockatoos and even some eagles.

....... because I've just counted 21 wild turkeys in the horse paddock and heard the coyotes. I hope one doesn't encounter the other any time soon.

We also have raccoons, red squirrels, chipmunks, skunks (must be careful with the dogs--our Ridgeback knows better but not the Cavalier), deer and lots of birds.

It's so rewarding getting up early in the morning.

deer frequent our yard, fox, bunnies, squirrels are plentiful in trees and running through the yard, coyotes are around, those awful snakes, birds of every stripe, possum, beaver, bears, frogs, armadillo, land turtles, gophers, and uh, well we live in the woods so we have them all........

occasionally a bear climbs a tree in city limits and fire dept has to get them down.

p.s. almost forgot the gators...........

I have also seen walking catfish farther down Florida. Really weird looking to see a fish cross the road!

Where I come from that definitely counts as wild life.

It might count as night life too!

In my area, people are on the look out for the elusive "Wild Ross" beast. It's a very nasty creature that is usual found near women.

We live near a conservation area (Waterdown actually has a small waterfall, hence the name) so have lots of deer, rabbits, racoons, coyotes, etc. nearby. They pretty much stay in the forest area though. However, there has been a lot of building nearby and as a result some smaller animals have taken refuge in our neighbourhood. In particular we have 2 chipmunks that seem to have taken up residence in our yard. They don't seem bothered by us as when we are sitting out there, they come right up close. In fact, the other day I was doing something in the garage and they both came whipping through....in and out in the blink of an eye.

I have lots of birds, I feed them. I live in the burbs but on my walk in the evening I may see raccoons, a fox... I see deer from time to time and squirrels out the kazoo .

Wal they has been called animals o' wo'se at times!! Depends on eff'n Madge has t'git out th' shotgun.

No, no, bubba. She means the wild animals that live around the house. We live out in the country and have deer, coyote, pigs, squirrels, rabbits, armadillos, foxes, bobcats, possum, raccoons, all kinds of birds (that live to poop on cars I believe) from the small hummingbird to the very large buzzard. There is also a flock of Wild Turkey (no, Bubba not the Bourbon ). We also have a variety of snakes from rattlesnakes to non poisonous kinds. Mix into that around 20 to 30 cats (thanks to a benevolent Pa-in-law) and three Dawgs (plus the occasional passerby). By the way, one of the Dawgs HATES CATS!!!!! Old Blue, coupled with a neighbor who also HATES CATS, along with the coyotes keeps the cat population down somewhat.

Oh yeah, I guess we must count the flies (including HORSE FLYS ), mosquitos, no-see-?ms, gnats, wasps, yellow jackets, spiders, ants, roaches, lizards, frogs, and numerous other BUGS of prey!!!

Ain't it great t'live out in th' sticks but close inought t'th' city fo' th' nightlife!!
