My mitral valve is starting to feel like the ugly step sister.

Mitral valve regurgitation - fairly new problem diagnosed in August 2004.

Cardio thinks it was caused by a number of infections that accepted my hospitality and overstayed their welcome that winter (sinus, ear and urinary tract infections)! Although he also said it didn't make any difference what caused it - just what we're going to do about it and for now he is just watching and waiting and checking me every 6 months and I'm climbing the walls over the uncertainty!!!

1985 Mital and Aortic St Judes Mechanicals implanted
1989 Hysterectomy (dang coumadin)
1998 Pericardectomy for constrictive pericarditis
1999 Plication of diaphragm due to paralysis from severing phrenic nerve for above surgery
2002 Brain aneurysm and stroke
2004 Pacemaker implanted and attempted AV SA node ablation
2005 Four more Ablation attempts one resulting in flat lining on table -6 stents implanted
2005 Ablation number 6 using open heart surgery technique
2005 Defib/Pacemaker implated due to sudden cardiac death episode
2006 Mitral, Aortic, Tricuspid showing mild to moderate stenosis

Will I do it again. Depends on which day you ask me.

I have a mechanical mitral and a repaired tricuspid - the tricuspid was damaged by the mitral valve problems.

Do you know how much regurgitation your mitral valve has. Is it moderate, severe...? Do you know the number? Mine was 4+ (SEVERE)!

I saw where you are having stenosis in your valves . I didn't know that mechanical valves could have stenosis. First time I have read about that.

I have all my echo reports and have never seen a 1 - 4 number mentioned.
The first cardiologist who did my first echo wrote that it was moderate to severe. This was a shock because it was a total fluke that I even had the echo done. I had no symptoms then nor do I have any now.

In November 2005 after my 3rd echo I asked my current cardiologist which numbers on the report he was watching and he circled the LV Diastolic and LV Systolic Dimensions but emphasized the systolic was more important. According to the printed report a normal reading is 2.0 - 3.5 cm. Well my LV systolic has changed from 27 mm at my first echo in July 04 to 3.0 cm in November 05 and 33mm on my May 06 MRI. In the letter he wrote to my PCP, he wrote: ?Her end-systolic dimension was 33 mm, which is only slightly larger than it had been by echo when it was 30mm. This is probably just a difference in technique.?

That statement along with the fact that he does not want to do another echo when he sees me in December is very worrisome...

Bicuspid aortic valve is the most common genetic heart defect occurring in 2% of the population. No surprise that aortic issues are the leader here. It is also 5 time more likely to affect males than females.

I have a myxomatous mitral valve with no regurg (yet) and mild aortic and tricuspid regurg. No idea why.

Oh I'm so sorry, I was just teasing . I hope you know I didn't mean that at all. It's just my sense of humor. Probably doesn't translate well in the written word. My apologies. I should have said that I admire the personal strength you must have to go through all that and still have the energy to post here.
