Just back from our local coffeehouse -- Mill Mountain Coffee -- and enjoying the last sips of the house blend. Coffee from there is as good as I've come across anywhere, including the various DC haunts when I lived there.
Lately I have been trying to brew some of my own in a coffeemaker DW got me for Father's Day. I agree with Dennis that water makes a big difference. We are on some private water system out in the boonies, and it is heavily treated to meet (hopefully) EPA standards. Tastes terrible. When I brew my own, I use bottled spring water (usually Deer Park). Brand of coffee I've used is Folger's.
However, the coffee I brew never tastes as good as that at the coffeehouse, either Mill Mountain or Starbucks, so I spurge often. I don't smoke and drink little alcohol so I figure this is my allowed indulgence.
