I know you should not take aspirin, but what other medications should you not take before your surgery, I mean 7 days out from the date?
Thank you!

I would ask your cardio or your surgeon. I would probably start with your surgeon though. Good luck on your surgery next week.

There are actually quite a few supplements that doctors tell people not to take before surgery. The one that comes immediately to mind is vitamin C.

Often you only have to stop certain medication and supplements a few days before surgery, rather than a week away.

Unfortunately, many doctors forget to remind patients to stop meds and supplements, or they give incomplete info. For example, they will tell a patient to stop taking aspirin, but forget to tell them they should also avoid Motrin and Alieve.

Does your surgeon have a list of all the things you are currently taking? If so, you can call and say, "Which should I discontinue?" If not, you'll have to read your list over the phone and ask if each is all right. I wouldn't just ask, "What should I discontinue," because they might forget to mention something.

I was taking 500 mg of vitamin C daily and took it right up until surgery---since I was called in early.
There are probably many herbals that should be avoided also, ask your docs.

I'd avoid the supplements. Some of those make you prone to bleeding. I'd also avoid anything over the counter unless it is just an absolute necessity. You can live for a week without the therapeutic stuff. Just take your prescriptions until your doc says to stop.

I wasn't told to stop anything and took multivitamins up to and including the day before my surgery. My cardiologist did stop my HRT for good, told me not to take it any more so I had the added bonus of never having another period after my OHS, brilliant. :) I would add, for those women who are younger than me, I was 57 and had been taking it for about 20 years.

Thanks everyone!
The doctor is aware of the meds I take and he said they are fine, they did say do not take herbal type stuff. I was just wondering about dayquil if your sinuses act up, this time year I have this problem and sometimes take it.

You should call your surgeon's office with any question of this sort IMO

My surgeon gave me a lengthy list of products containing aspirin that I was to be off for 14 days. Of course, on pre-op blood test they will be measuring the aspirin in your blood.

Dayquil may be fine (I just checked the list I was given and it is not on it) but you really should check with your surgeon's office to be sure.

Good luck.

For Sinus relief, I use NeilMed Nasal Rinse which is a saline solution and should have no interactions. Most pharmacies carry NeilMed (or other) Nasal Rinse kits.

The NeilMed pre-measured pre-mixed packets are NON-irritating (to me at least). Be sure to read the instructions or ask for directions on how to use the rinse. (Breathe through your mouth while rinsing)

I just started using the Neti Pot, which works really good. Is that the same thing you mentioned?
