I have an allergy to dressings/ecg stickers etc which the hospital knew about so they used the least and best dressings they could, and I thought I had got away with any problems as when they took the dressings off about a week and a half ago the skin was only red. Now the last 24 hours the skin has been incredibly itchy and burning sensation. I have taken the max dose of piriton (anti histamine) with very little effect. Kept awake by this when I already sleep badly enough. I've used a neutral moisturiser as well as the patches of skin are rough as well as red. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do ?

Do have Gold Bond lotion in the UK or Aveno (sp) hand lotion? Aveno is made with oatmeal and is very good for soothing the skin.

If all else fails, you may have to get a prescription for 1% of cortisone cream.

Cold compresses or an ice pack will deaden the itch I have caused by eczema. Either that or it gets scratched 'till it bleeds.:rolleyes2: And I never use products containing scent.

Will see how it goes and get hubby to go to chemist tomorrow if it continues…it looks like eczema which I've never had, but most likely just an allergic dermatitis ?

Itchness is a part of the healing process--the tissues are reconnecting. When I was discharged, I was warned not to use any lotions on the incision for at least a month! I only washed with warm water and mild unscented soap. I'm not sure what is "neutral moisturizer" and whether this eczema appeared as a reaction to it!

Good luck and keep us posted.

Some of this is now the incision tightening/itching, but the dressings part is still reacting, even afar as the line in area on my neck - full of spots which is my usual reaction to dressings - crazy the reaction came on fully after over a week. I've continued with piriton but now that has caused other problems like antihistamines do (dry mouth/gut slowing) - I can't believe how 'sensitive' I am to meds :( It is such a nuisance :(

PS Lance - ice packs are helping now !
