Hey VR's! I've been keeping up with most things here, just more in 'lurk' mode than post mode. Anyway, my wife & I are probably going to take a drive up to the Twin Cities area this summer, just to get away from Indiana for a while. Those of you who live there, or who have traveled there - feel free to give us tips, ideas of things to do, places to stay, etc. We already plan to take a city tour, and visit the Mall of course. Also, is it true what I'm hearing about no state sales tax in the Mall of America? Any information greatly appreciated.

It is absolutely true that there is no sales tax on clothes in Minnesota - something that I came to appreciate when I moved away about five years ago.

I really enjoy the Wabasha Street Caves, which was the hideout for Ma Barker, John Dillenger, and others during the 30's. The Uptown Art Fair is great if you're there around the first week in August, when it is typically held. The fair shuts down the whole Uptown area for independent artists, who often only do that show all year (read: good prices). Walking around Lake Calhoun is EXTREMELY popular, but I enjoy the river more. My favorite place is around the University of Minnesota campus (which is just outside of downtown Minneapolis). A drive down Summit Avenue is St. Paul is highly recommended. Here is some information:

I'll post a few more things as I think about them.

You really ought to go to a MN Twins baseball game at the Metrodome in Downtown Minneapolis!! A fun day! Then the Mall of America is a MUST! Also, there is Valley Fair Amusement Park in Shakopee (not too far from the Mall of America). Also, the Science Museum of Minnesota in Downtown St. Paul is great also!! Have a fun trip & let us know so that we can order some of that great MN weather for you!! (Just had severe storms here the other day that knocked down trees, powerlines, etc...but we never have that for when tourists are here!) Hope you make it to the "Land of 10,000 Lakes"!:)

It all depends on what you plan to buy at the MOA

It all depends on what you plan to buy at the MOA

As Mike said, there is no sales tax on clothing of any kind, but that goes for ALL stores in MN. If you are buying anything other than clothing or groceries though...the sales tax is 6.5% as it is in most places in MN.

I just checked a receipt from the last time we were there, to see if there were any added local taxes or anything, and as of July '06 it was still 6.5%. I don't find it to be a great place to shop...but it is certainly is something to see.

Let us know when you're going to be in the area...maybe we can all get together for a meal or a drink or something.

There is so incredibly much to do in the Twin Cities area. What are your interests? When will you be coming to town? We should do a MN get together if possible. They have tons of restaurants at the Mall, if you are interested shout out. The Ordway and State and Orpheum all have excellent entertainment and great web sites to see what will be playing when you get here.

Enjoy :)

Enjoy :)

I grew up in Wayzata, a little suburb of MPLS. Moved up to Northern MN when Dad retired and stayed :) I can't offer anything entertainment wise anymore as everything we do tends to be up in the woods or on a ship :D The Manny's Steakhouse is an excellent option if your are looking for upscale steak. Traveling with kids? The Children's Theater used to be a great attraction, also the MN Science Museum, the Minnesota Zoo as well as Komo Zoo. Valley Fair in Shakopee is fabulous as mentioned. A two hour trek North can take you to the port town of Duluth. Farther north by an hour will take you to our stomping grounds in the Great North Woods-boating, camping, resorts, ATVing and a few mosquitos :)

Enjoy your trip and hope to hear all about it!

Certainly enjoy your trip...

But, if you are going from IN to MN ... a stop in the Elgin IL area is a very good idea ;).
