We had travel medical insurance which would likely have covered the cost if it was necessary for me to have a blood test, I'm sure...I personally would not travel without taking out insurance.

Where/how did you get travel insurance that covers medical emergencies?

I need to look into something. Yesterday, I was accepted as a longhair judge trainee. Once/if I get through my training sessions, I'll (hopefully) doing more judging since I will be able to judge both shorthair and longhair cats, i.e., all the cats in a show. I will no doubt be traveling more. Once our judges are fully certified, they can accept invitations to judge shows overseas. My medical insurance through my work would not cover me in those instances.

Hi Marsha

Things here in NZ are a bit different from what I can gather happens in the States:

*We have a health system that is free for all NZer's (a bit like the NHS in the UK)

*We don't have to take out private medical insurance - that is optional, and the cost prohibits many, many people from doing so. All illnesses, operations and emergencies etc are covered by the public hospital system, although waiting lists for ops can be VERY long.

*When you book a holiday you ideally take out short term (for the duration of the holiday) travel insurance which covers medical emergencies and treatments while you are on holiday. For example, I took out insurance with a company called Mike Henry Travel Insurance - it covered myself, my partner and our two kids. Because I have a "pre-existing" medical condition I had to get a certificate from my GP stating that I was "fit to travel", and also pay an extra $40 on top of the standard premium. The policy would have covered any treatments, tests etc which were absolutely necessary (an INR test would be in this category) and Mike Henry would have covered the cost - although there was an excess of $75 per treatment.

So if I had needed to get an INR test in Singapore, the policy would have covered it, less the first $75, if you get my drift...

As far as your travelling goes, do you have the option of taking out short term insurance before each trip, or would the cost be too much??
