Hi,

I have had to halt my cardiac rehabilitation program for the mo because I have possibly damaged a tendon in my ankle (can't walk on it, too painful, like this for nearly a week now), probably caused by the repetitive nature of some of the exercises. I did them exactly as the cardiac specialist nurse instructed me so this is a bit of a mystery. Except I seem to be prey to tendon problems. I have had tennis elbow for a few years which still threatens to give me problems if I work the arm too repetitively, and I get trigger finger sometimes. Could tendon problems be more likely in people with bicuspid aortic valve ? I definitley haven't got Marfan's though. Is this just coincidence ? I am generally extremely fit - or was before this surgery :(

Hi, Anne, I found myself wondering what I would have done. Is it possible that you could swim which would keep weight off your limbs but give you a good cardiac workout. I've never heard that tendon problems can be associated as you are wondering. Perhaps you will get a better response from someone who has a similar experience. At present, it seems that you must let it heal.

Over the years, I have had a frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, and achilles tendinitis. I don't have Marfan's but my mother has also experienced these same inflammatory conditions over the years and she does not have a bicuspid valve, so I just blame it on family genes and repetitive strain from exercise etc. .
Did a very quick google search (not extensive) and didn't find a correlation. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Thanks - I shall have to continue rest up until it heals (I hate just sitting around). Swimming sounds a good idea Larry. And if the cardiologist gives me the go ahead next week I can get back to weight lifting which never caused problems and was excellent high intensity cardio: weight_lifting.gif

Anne - Have you checked all of your meds for possible side effects? I know that some of the antibiotics have serious warnings about possible tendon injuries that can happen during normal activities when taking the antibiotic. (Levaquin is one of these. . . )

I'm not on any antibiotics now, though I'm on beta blockers still. The ankle is getting better, but very slowly, and it's over a week now. I find I can't walk properly on it so can't do any exercise :( It's quite weird really but maybe these things just take ages. The cardiac specialist nurse has been keeping in touch.
