Wow! It sounds like a lot of your surgeons really didn't give you a game plan when they discharged you.
My surgeon and cardiologist both reminded me to have an annual echocardiogram from now on, just a little well-check for the valve and heart. It seemed to be standard with them. And since my recovery was reasonably uneventful, I probably wouldn't have been told to do so if it weren't routine.
You can certainly be followed by your primary care physicians. However, there is new research showing substantially better long-term outcomes for people who are followed by cardiologists.
