My wonderful sister, Cathy, (actually both of my sisters are pretty wonderful!) is always thinking of others. She's creative & works for JoAnn Fabrics.

We were trying to find some jammies for John to wear in the hospital & when he comes home. Not finding anything, Cathy decided to buy some colorful, inexpensive T-shirts. She's cut down the front, hemmed the edges and put Velcro on the edges. She's made 1 long-sleeved and 2 short-sleeved shirts. He can use these as jammie tops when we go to my other sister's lake home.

I had some discomfort in getting on/off pullover tops for several weeks after my surgery 4 years ago, thus my sister's ingenuity. She also took John shopping & found him a robe/housecoat for almost nothing, and some jammy bottoms, again for almost nothing. :D

How kind and generous of her. I'm wondering about how comfortable a strip of velcro above his wound is going to be?

I only wanted the smoothness of a very soft fabric for the first several weeks, at least. (I understand there will be cloth between the velcro and his skin.) For the most part, I didn't have much trouble pulling reasonably large opening crew necks over my head. I wouldn't have wanted to struggle with a close fitting one.

Hope he has a smooth and comfortable recovery.

The tops sound great! Usually men heal quickly.

I had collected a bunch of front opening shirts for my post-op and I didn't end up wearing any of them....I had some incision healing issues and I was paranoid to have anything near it.

So I took some of hubby's white cotton T-shirts and I cut them from the neck down on an angle about 6 inches. this was secured with a pin, and when the flap was open I had good access to clean my incision.

I've often joked to friends that if anything EVER happens to me, my sister & my husband have my posthumous blessing to get married.
Seriously, my sister considers John the "big brother" (5 years older) she never had. (We weren't lucky enough to have any brothers!)

Jkm7:

John's having a minimally invasive procedure, thorocotomy on the right side.
HOWEVER, I think that with the Velcro not facing the skin, that it would be comfortable enough even for me to have used 4 years ago with a sternotomy. There are several grades of Velcro, depending on usage.

Marsha,
Sounds like you are getting things ready for your husband's surgery. I've been thinking about you and your husband this week. I am praying John has a smooth uneventful surgery - just like mine!
