It's five weeks post op the day after tomorrow and I saw my cardiologist this morning as my endocrinologist wanted me to see him sooner rather than later just to check things out.

The cardiologist did ECG which is normal :) Also x-ray which is much improved from my discharge x-ray :)

He can hear the 'bang' which I'm hearing at the end of each heart beat which gets worse as the day goes on or after food. He's going to arrange an echo and a 24 hour heart rhythm monitor for me just to check things out.

But he said I was doing well despite the continuing pain and the weight loss.. He said that five weeks is not a lot of time after major surgery and likened OHS to a traumatic car accident injury to the chest. He reckons that recovery takes at least three months but that there is a "gung-ho" attitude which increases patients' expectations.

So I'm feeling much better morale-wise now :)

hi anne, brill news your well on the road to recovery, my cardio more or less said the same thing, remember him telling me that its a full 6 month before your body is healed, onwards and upwards anne

Good news. Let's hope the food issue resolves itself soon.

Deb,
So glad you are feeling better morale wise! Sounds like you had a pretty good visit with your doc. I mentioned in another post that I am petite as well and lost about the same amount of weight as you. I, too was told it was due to surgical insult. It took me a good few months to gain it back, but I did. :) One day at a time...

I want your doc, neil. At my six-month check after surgery, my cardio told me that, sure I feel great after six months, but, "Let's see how you're doing in five years."

Plenty of rest is what I feel I need. Yesterday I kept dropping off to sleep during the day and couldn't wait to turn the light out at night (oh very good news is I can ie down to sleep practicaly the whole night now…bliss)….I don't think I've ever felt so tired ! Which made me wonder…….everyone said before surgery that we would feel tons beter afterwards, even though I was personally feeling extremely well before surgery, but people said you may be asymptomatic but you'll notice the difference afterwards ! Uh ? When ? At three months or six months !?!? I hope so before then a bit !

I'm having a 24 hour ECG monitor put on on Friday (probably). When I looked up about that it said you have to note down on a piece of paper or card when you do things and when you feel "palpitations". What exactly are "palpitations" ? When I said to a doc I can feel and hear my heart thumping and that it makes a 'banging' noise at the end of each beat and that it's worse after food he wrote in his review "palpitations" - so are they just an awareness of heart beat ?

Anne - Since we all heal differently, you may well be right on track in spite of the bumps in the road. I didn't really feel "better" until nearly 3 months post-op, evidenced by the fact that I was not cleared for cardiac rehab until 12 weeks post-op. I did feel better day by day, with some setbacks, but didn't feel remotely "whole" again until 3 or 4 months out.

Hang in there. Keep an eye on things, but give it some time.
