Looks like we're stuck with Harper. The CBC has concluded it will be a Tory minority government. Unfortunately they actually gained some seats but not enough for a majority (thank goodness!).

I've just come home from counting the record-setting 801 votes cast at the advance poll I worked at. Came down and checked, looks like a minority Conservative-Harper government again - gee, they've just wasted how much and we're back at square one. Now that I am no longer an Elections Canada official, I can have an opinion again !!

I take it your Tories are our Republicans?

Pretty much....essentially the conservative right. The liberals are moderates left of centre. The NDP are left wing with roots as a labour party. The Bloc are Quebec nationalists. The Green....well they're "green" but it's still unclear what else.

I think the big winner was the NDP as they made some interesting gains in popular vote although they have a long way to go to win enough seats to be a viable contender to ever form a government. I think this was a wake up call to both Harper and Dion that neither of them have what it takes to gain the backing of the nation. It's obvious that the Liberals need a new leader, but I suspect some Tories will be thinking the same thing about their party. While the Tories did manage to win more seats, it looks like it was more about the lesser of evils, and split votes, than real support for Harper and the Tories. IMHO not really a cause for celebration in their camp. Anyway, such a waste of money to be pretty much where we started. I'm glad the election is behind us and the MPs can get back to work and try to do something more constructive.
