Maybe the Confederate Flag means different things to different people.
What, you wanna ban it?
So if I say it's racist symbol that means I want to ban it? I don't know how things work "down under" but here they have a right to fly that flag and I have a right to say I believe those inbreds are showing it as a symbol of racism IMO. I have German heritage and I have a right to fly a flag with a swastika on it but ta doesn't mean it's right. It means different things is ********, a pussy copout , I have a bit more respect for ones who admit it. They were traitors who lost and now they brag about their'heritage'. It's bragging to mask an inferiority complex , sounds like someone I know.
I couldn't vote for Trump anyway because he says he's never had a single sip of alcohol let alone any drugs. He was at college at the University of Pennsylvania ( where I had my surgery BTW-shoutout ) and was 21 in 1967 and never partied even once? There's something very strange and wrong about that.

You guys had a Civil War, are you saying the Confederates were traitors?
Is everyone who flies a Confederate flag a racist?
It's your history. I don't claim to be an expert, which is why I'm asking. Why are you getting angry?
Trump is a ******** artist, Hillary an even bigger one.

Yes I am saying the Confederates were traitors. I'm not saying all who fly the flag are racist but I am saying the vast majority are. What it has to do with the Democratic Party escapes me other than you are making assumptions about my political affiliation. Trump isn't a Republican anyway.
Anyone who knows anything about American politics knows the parties 'swapped' in terms of race in the mid 20th century. Your article there shows politicians from the 1800's. When LBJ pushed the civil rights act in 1964 the Democrats of the south immediately became Republicans and have voted that way ever since. It wasn't a coincidence.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Rights_Act_of_1964
If you look at the stats Northern Democrats were almost unanimously for it southern dems were against it. They're the ones who left the party and that's why.

I did. But the point is, no one has a monopoly on hatred.
I don't understand why the Confederates were traitors.
BTW Abe had creepy eyes.

They were traitors because they seceded from the union. Just like the states were traitors in the eyes of the English in 1776. Abe had Marfans.

So the Confederates were traitors because they ceded from the Union, but the States weren't, despite ceding from the English. Doesn't make sense.
The English considered the Americans traitors, just like you consider the Confederates. Doesn't necessarily make it so. It's just perception.
I know people with Marfans and they don't have creepy eyes.

Hell if in this day and age and being some of the most scrutinized people on the planet with about half the country out to get them

first question: who watches the watchmen?
second question: the best way to hide something is often in plain sight because people just don't want to believe. Have you genuinely applied critical disbelief to what you see written about "your team"

To an Australian Americans just adore their chosen side and ignore the faults. For instance, did you read of Hillarys bus just pumping out its sewage tank into a storm water drain?

Sometimes you guys think you're watching when you choose what to believe. For instance look at the attitudes of these reporters:

bet they were "shocked" when the results came out ... as if they weren't told.

they could kill all those people and get away with it I definitely want them running things

Really? I'd want them so far away from my family that it wouldn't exist on this planet.

I want open and transparent representation, not cloak and dagger

. It's weird because at the same time she's accused of being incompetent.

never by me ... don't be confused that mixed messages come from mixed people. When you hear mixed messages come from one person, then they're mixed up, but when you get mixed messages from many people, thats caused by mixed opinions of each of them. Some may be wrong, some may be right. I have friends who are great at somethings, but that doesn't mean I'd want them working on my car.

It's like friends I have who say the government is incompetent at everything

a common issue, which is often caused by the fact that like all committies sometimes decisions which are not what are wanted are accepted to placate the noisy.

I'm shocked that Obama is still alive considering

I'd have thought assisinations of outgoing presidents were historically uncommon...

Has anyone counted all the dead who knew either of the Bush presidents?

an equally evil bunch if you ask me ...

lastly on your point (I think in another post) about Trump not being a Republican, that is in my view what made this race so interesting. I'd expected early that Jeb would have had a run up (he's family after all). Trump is to me the closest thing I've seen yet in the USA to an independent rep as president. The way he's reshuffling his cabinet seems that he's not making friends with the Old Guard in the GoP either ... something that also interests me.

If if had been Jeb VS Clinton I'd have not been interested at all because it would have seemed business as usual to me. Not that I'm any sort of expert, just one who asks questions

The English considered the Americans traitors,
my reading of history is that the English didn't give a ****, they were just worried about revenue control and with a long term view to colonies wanted to keep that 'investment'. I also feel that if it hadn't been for the French assistance (and them being embroiled in other wars around that time) that they would have just crushed the rebellion with overwhelming strength. The French harried them and they went "oh Meh" and let them have it.

Have you (Agian) looked at the inside fly of your Australian Passport? I think that makes my point about the strength of hold the English liked to exert on their colonies.

Lastly if points can not be discussed openly and dispassionaltely without rancour then society has become divided along partisan lines. Policy has made the move towards Dogma and Government become a step closer to Religion.

As Sagan said ... we must question and participate ... if we do not control Government Government controls us. Isn't that what was fought against? Autocracy / Theocracy / Monarchy for Democracy?

Demos = the people
Kratia = rule or governance

Those who seek to divide and create animosity between the people for their own benefits are not truly interested in the people or democratic principles, they are interested in power for themselves.

France, eager for revenge after its defeat in the Seven Years' War, signed an alliance with the new nation in 1778 that proved decisive in the ultimate victory.
Seven Years' War (1756–-63)

Her Majesty the Parasite.

yeah ... when I first went to London and walked around the old parts of town you could see when the waves of money were coming in. Makes one see what an Empire really gives the leadership...

Seriously, Australia is a republic except in name.

functionally yes. Despite being anti-monarchist I didn't vote for the specifics of republic in the last pelbecite. I thought we need to move more generally before we leap on a specific model. Undoubtedly the constitutional lawyers were salivating like dogs awaiting release and for that reason alone I was glad we deferred our options.

Having an Irish passport as well it makes me feel somehow less "independent" when the inside of my Ozzie passport reads:

"The Govenor-General of the Comonwealth of Australia, being the representative in Australia of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, requests all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer, an Australian Citizen, to pass freely and without let or hinderance and to afford him or her every assistance and protection of which he or she may stand in need"

What a load of codswallop ... Makes me feel like a little kid going to the shop and telling them mummy sent me.

Welcome back. I thought I (we?) pissed you off. There was no intention to get you angry. You're a nice guy.
Maybe we just don't understand your race issues.

Yes Pellicle, the proposed model was stupid. Australia doesn't need a President. A figure head G-G, some tweaking, and everything stays the same... Except we don't have the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha family as nominal heads of state.

Agreed, zero animosity this end too

I'm not pissed. I agree we were traitors in the eyes of the English and a lot of the revolution was about money, what else is new. However they also created a constitutional democracy/ republic- no queen gibberish on my passport. It wasn't perfect as the perfect can be the enemy of the good. They knew they had to keep slavery in order to keep the South who without they had no chance to win the war. Some of the founding fathers were slave holders who acknowledged it was an immoral and doomed system- complicated. The South seceded from the union because Abe abolished slavery and they wanted to keep It as a way of life. Maybe it's all just perception but I perceive slavery as immoral.
As for the storm drain sewage dump some areas of the US still have combined storm and sanitary. Anyway it's all anecdotal. Its a hired bus and for all we know that same driver is hauling a bunch of old ladies to Atlantic city and dumping their **** down a storm drain right now. Or maybe Hillary ordered it and giggled as she rubbed her hands together watching the procedure? Maybe on a full moon she wanders the countryside shitting in storm drains..... Again I'm no fan. She may be hypocritical on that issue also - publicly pro environment and privately doesn't care but I'll take that over a party that cheers whenever someone says they're going to get rid of the EPA altogether and return to the good old days of rivers catching on fire. Does overregulation happen? Of course and so does under. Anything run by humans tends to be flawed. The odds of getting the balance just right is low but the solution isn't to scrap all regulations. That kind of "thinking" appeals to simple minds who see things in black and white. Not to mention the push to replace science class with Jesus class....
Trump is a weather vane, whatever the person or audience in front of him wants to hear. Steve Bannon is his head adviser, an anti semite, anti gay, anti most things. Already backing off 'the wall', might not repeal Obamacare, but of course when none of these things transpire there will be a scapegoat. I agree that Jeb is not he most exciting person. That's why he was called 'low energy Jeb', then there was 'little Marco", 'lying Ted' and 'crooked hillary' - makes 3rd grade recess seem sophisticated.
BTW it's always sunny in PHILADELPHIA, well not today but you get it.
