Many of us on VR.com have bicuspid aortic valves, which is thought to be genetically heritable. I am curious to know how many of we BAV'ers also have other known genetic mutations/congenital "abnormalities". I'll kick things off with my lack of the third set of molars (wisdom teeth) and my "bovine arch" of the aorta (where the left common carotid and innominate arteries have a common origin). Anyone else?

Also, someone recently intimated that BAV'ers tend to be tall. (I'm female and 5' 10") How about nearsightedness? (I'm very nearsighted, with -10 lenses for both eyes)

Hey PJ
I never had any wisdom teeth, am 5'9" tall and am nearsighted, other than that I think I am normal.:p

I inherited the Arthritic spine of an 80 year old...
I have more levels with bone spurs and herniated discs than good levels.
When I first saw an Xray of a healthy spine I thought it was a fake or a drawing  all the bones were so perfectly shaped and even whereas mine are all dodgy.
I also have a high arched palate
My brain isnt working this morning so I cant recall the other 'different' bits I have. I did get tested for Marfans and they said I didnt quite have that but I do have a connective-tissue-disorder. My Histopathology test showed my aorta has Cystic Medial Degeneration.

I'm prone to skin cancer. My face, shoulders, arms, chest, and back have been treated. All the tanning from my youth is coming back with a vengeance.

Male 6'0" tall
Osgood Schlatter - adolescent
Air-born allergies - lifelong
Near sighted both eyes - onset age 40
Crowded jaw in addition to impacted wisdom teeth.
Skin cancer - post AVR, but likely due to childhood sun exposure
Inflammatory bowel disease - Dx post AVR, perhaps lifelong, perhaps aggravated by distance running.
Varicose veins post AVR.

I know this is an old thread, but I just found out that I also have bovine origin carotid arteries. This was revealed by a CTA to test for blockages in arteries to my arm (none, thankfully).

However, I'm short. 5'6"
I am nearsighted, but not THAT badly.
The bone at the base of my neck is malformed (straight instead of curved); this has cause me lots of neck and shoulder pain.
Migraines; just had the worst of my life last night (wonder if that's related to my neck problem?)

My cardio told me that 10% of the population have bovine origin carotid arteries (they join at one artery as opposed to leading to separate arteries). He that this is a normal variant. So, that makes some of us normally unusual?

That's exactly what my surgeon said--except he didn't quote the 10%. Even so, you're the only one I know who has it too (at least the only one who seems to know about it). I'm glad you revived this thread--now I know I'm not alone in my "bovine-ness". Incidentally, my old cardiologist, when I mentioned the bovine arch tried to B. S. me--chuckled and told me "it's not "bovine" it's "bowline". Uh huh. Kinda weird he didn't know about something so many people have...then again, there was quite a bit he didn't seem to know....which is why he's history.

I never heard of bovine arch of the aorta until today. When he told me I thought it was bad news; he must have known because he quickly told me it was "normal". I couldn't help but wonder if it was related to BAVD. That's how I found this thread.

hey,
this thread is really old, but I'll respond anyways....
I do have BAV with aortic regurg, I also have a mildly hypoplastic aorta/aortic arch (not quite a coart) had a VSD at birth, left ventricular outflow tract obstruction, and mitral stenosis, thats heart wise

I had severe acid reflux not sure why as I am 20 yrs old, but I had surgery to fix it-probably something to do with me being so sick as a baby

I am not tall, actually Im really short (5'0") and I dont really have any joint issues, except for TMJ, which is off and on pretty much a non issue.

mom was told that my spine looked like I almost had spina bifida or something, wasnt serious, just looked funny

other than that, I cant really think of anything else

oh yeah, migraines, I get em once or twice a month

ok, thats enough......
later
Morgan

I honestly don't know if I was a BAV or not, but suspect so. Anyhow, Pulmonary Hemosiderosis for me.
