I can hear my St. Jude's valve pretty easily. I had a boyfriend that used to call me "Croc" because I sounded like the crocodile that swallowed the clock in Peter Pan. But I switched that boyfriend out for another one who found the sound comforting at night when we were falling asleep.
My cat seems to love the sound and purrs loudly whenever he is close to my chest. My daughter is amused by the sound but my son says he can't hear it.
Like others have mentioned, the loud ticking makes it easy to take my heartbeat while exercising. I don't even have to feel my wrist or neck.
It took a while to get used to it but I like it, now. It's me.:)

I made my decision for a tissue valve but not for noise avoidance reasons. In terms of your options with either mechanical or tissue options; I summarized my decision based on the following consideration. The newer the valve, the potentially greater the benefits / performance; however; newer valves will naturally have a shorter track record than the newer valves. Once I made the decision on valve type with lots of input from my cardio and surgeon, I left the decision on specifically which valve to use up to my surgeon.

Good luck and your decision. I agonized over mine for months, but once I made it, it was a major relief... one more unknown out of the way.
