News: On January 14, 2009, the New England Journal of Medicine published the results of the WHO Surgical Safety Pilot Study online. The full text of the paper is available free of charge as an Online First publication at www.nejm.org. It will appear in print in the January 29th issue.
Dr. Gawande discusses the prospect of reforming the American health care system in his most recent New Yorker article. It was published in the January 26th edition and can be viewed online here (www.gawande.com)
========================
Dr. Atul Gawande was interviewed by Charlie Rose on the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) recently which was aired tonight (2009.04.02) on our local PBS station.
He spoke of introducing Check Lists for Surgery, similar to what is used by Pilots of Commercial Aircraft before every flight.
He reported that 80% of Surgeons thought it was a useful technique while 20% thought it was a waste of their time. (This technique was also featured on an ER (TV Program) episode just last week ... or the week before, I forget which)
He then asked those 20% if they were having surgery, would they want a Check List to be used and the response in favor was 94%. Q.E.D.
