ross,
i think everyone here 's come up with great points and ideas. the attorney is a great idea, calling some of chris's friends and yours and lyn's and asking them for a hand in terms of visiting and being there is another.

the good thing here is that chris is alive. like karlynn said, one step at a time.

you know that we are all here for you. wish i could be closer and help more.
our big prayers continue for you, lyn and your family.

please try to make sure and take care of yourself.

wishing only the best and thinking of you,
sylvia

Ross-

It is so hard to read about all of these terrible issues. And to find out that this kid has no insurance or even a driver's license is just so bad. I am quite sure the family of the woman who perished in the accident will pursue legal action, perhaps you could piggy back on her case or use the same lawyer.

One never knows what assets he might have. But you certainly deserve to find out.

If he has had other accidents or citings in the past, there might be other culpabilities too. There have been law suits against bars and liquor stores. A good lawyer could root it all out.

Some great advice.

Have patience with your son. If there is no indication of a problem with the scans, then it's probably his reaction to the meds and the accident. He'll come back to you. He will. Stay patient and positive.

Good luck. Hang in there. Continued positive thoughts coming your way each day.

Hon, what insurance? The guy didn't even have a drivers license! Like I said, we got problems. :( Yes, Chris being alive is the only good point in all of this so far. I wish we could just pin that ankle together and things would be fine, but he's missing a huge chunk of bone right where the foot bends and part of the heel is gone. He's looking at some heavy duty bone grafting and reconstruction. Ortho is looking into specialists. I just don't know where were going from here.
I'm going to see if we cant get him on Medicaid. He hasn't had much for income. 26 weeks of unemployment and just started a telemarketing job, so that is minimal income.

Ross:
More prayers continuing to come your way!

Was the driver at fault the registered owner of the car he was driving?
Who owned the car that Chris was riding in? Was there uninsured motorist on that & any medical coverage for occupants?

When John was hit by an uninsured driver (homeless Vietnam veteran, too, poor man) in December, everything fell under the uninsured motorist & medical expenses, too.
John's car was 8 years old -- he got $6,000 I think for it because it was totaled (our deductible was $250 under uninsured motorist), and every penny of medical bills was covered. Of course, John's bills were miniscule compared to Chris' & Savannah's bills. This summer we received an additional check ($1,800) because we had Personal Injury Protection coverage.

Dear Ross:

I echo other sentiments here as well. I believe that Chris's car insurance will cover him, and his fiancee if there is no insurance on the other vehicle. Even though the driver of the other vehicle was without a license, the insurance covers the vehicle, not the driver.

That being said, please know that all of us here are praying for you, and your family. As all of us have found out, it sometimes takes many days before the full medical story can be told. And, you are at the beginning of a journey, to help your son.

We all care.

Had to come in from work and check how your family were doing Ross! So sorry its still so rough but glad Chris is at least awake now. Really hope the memory problems are short term. My friend is a nurse and I just spoke with her about it - she said this is common in head injuries even without brain damage and often rectifies itself without a problem.
Still sending love and prayers and wishing there was something 'useful' I could do!

Ross,
In many states, incurring enough in medical bills will automatically qualify a patient for Medicare.
A few years ago a family friend was involved in a motorcycle accident - his 30,000 in bills qualified him, and his bills were covered.
It is something to look into. Concentrate on his health - think about this tomorrow. The doctors should consider his health - not his ability to pay! Deal with the business office later.

Best of luck to you - thanks for posting the update!!

continued prayers for your family!!

Ross, perhaps a call to a very good, reputable attorney would be in order soon. He or she could help you sort out the issues of the driver's and/or other parties' liability. Just a thought...

Ross: Stretch has given you very good advice, and I would have already said the same thing If I hadn't been so stunned. There may be uninsured motorist coverage frfom this vehicle or other vehicles. There may be insurance (often called dram shop insurance) from the place who sold the liquor to the other driver. Is there anyone who can help get you to a good lawyer. A good lawyer would want to get started right now getting pictures, taking statements and pursuing possibility insurance coverage. Coverage can be found in places the average layman could never imagine, so absolutley do not give up on that possibility! With this many vehicles and people involved, I am betting there is going to be some insurance available.

Rumor has it and this is yet uncomfirmed that the driver of the offending vehicle passed away and the passenger is not expected to survive either. I'm trying to verify this, but so far, nothing is varifiable.

As for verifying whether or not the offending driver passed away or not as well as the passenger, I think that you and Savannah's family HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW WHETHER HE PASSED AWAY OR NOT......THIS JUST MAKES ME SOOO ANGRY:mad:

Ross, i am so sorry that this whole nightmare is getting worse for you and not at the point it is getting better, which it will. Like Karlynn (i believe) and others have said, please don't worry about the whole picture right now, think about the baby steps it will make it easier to deal w/ . kind of like we tell people having heart surgery, first is the surgery then losing the vent, then losing more tubes, just take it step by step. I would also think that someones insurance will be responsible for Chris and savannahs, medical bills and rehab and what ever else may be needed along the way, but i think like other said that you should get a lawyer and have HIM 9or her ) deal w/ all those issue and you can just concentrate on Chris and your families well being. I am sorry there aren't more family members around, i know this would be hard on a parent that was 100% healthy themselves, and I know it will be hard, but please try to take care of yourself too. If not for yourself, then do it for Lyn, I believe in prayer and think all the prayers going your way will help a little, and please as long as all this takes know you can come here to vent, Lyn

Ross,

Our prayers will continue for you family and your future in-laws. Don't know what else to say. Stay strong and thank God that Chris and his fiancee are still here.

Ross

What can I say that has not been said..Here I?m in the middle of the afternoon checking the forum just to know how you and your family are doing and praying for you. I will add to other?s comments ....please, please get a lawyer, then talk to the social worker of the hospital. They can really pull a lot of strings. Make good friend with the social workerr and do not give up. My brother had a hip replacement a few years ago and the insurance would no pay for rehabilitation and medicare did cover because he ?had insurance? and the hospital wanted to release him with an infection on his leg as the insurance wanted to stop paying. I spoke to the doctors and told them flat out that he refused to be release (they can?t send you home if you say no way...what are they going to do, pull you out?), Then started working, pleading, crying with the hospital social worker and he got personally involved, experiencing the frustrations himself and finally called the social worker of the best rehabilitation hospital in NY and got them to admit my brother on a charity case.....did not pay a penny!
Sorry for such a lengthy post but wanted to let you know that doors open and please do not despair. So get a lawyer and start making friends with the hospital social worker and do not let the hospital release your son until you are satisfied there is way out. God bless

Ross, I just saw this. Your family has my deepest sympathy. I just wanted to echo Marguerite by saying that my father had a similar trauma, and his mental state sounded exactly like your son's. After about a week, as he came out of the shock and medication, he was mentally normal again. You will be in our thoughts.

Ross, I just spoke with Wes on the phone ( Wes is my son who has been in Law Enforement for 15 years) He asked me when did the accident occur and I told him..he said, anytime there is a Fatality involved..it will take several days for the final report to come out.....maybe even a week...He did say, that you could call the Ohio Police/trooper..station that worked the accident...and ask them if they would come and talk to you...before the final report. He said, that he had gone to hospitals before and talked with families...........You/Lyn take care.. Prayers still with all of you. Bonnie

Ross, so sorry to hear about your current trials. your family is definately in my prayers...I certainly understand you wanting to be there and still trying to keep everything else in check... while I can't be there in person.. if there is anything I can do remotely, please don't hesitate to ask.

Chris
