Ross, haven't been on here for a week ('puter probs). This is a real mess. I'm so sorry for you and Lyn and your son and his fiancee and her mom.

Your son really needs a lawyer. He should be able to get one on a contingency basis since there'll be a lawsuit. If he wasn't driving the car, he might be covered by the liability coverage on the car, as well as uninsured motorists because he isn't related to the owners of the vehicle. I wish I had a copy of an Ohio auto policy (no longer within my grasp since retirement). Ohio has some really weird auto insurance laws, as I recall - pretty consumer-friendly. So it's imperative that Chris gets a good insurance lawyer and not depend on one that covers the car he was in. He probably won't like the idea that there's going to be an adversarial relationship between him and his fiancee's insurer; but he needs to suck it up and get mercenary real fast.

Anyway - all my prayers to you and Lyn. I'm sure a lot of your son's snottiness is the result of the accident - PTSD, pain, fear, dependence - and things will begin to look up.
They have the same insurer, but still, it's likely to get ugly.

The saga continues

The saga continues

Chris saw the Ortho today. The skin is black and dead where the large chunk of bone came through. He's sending him to a specialist at St. Thomas Hospital in Akron, OH tomorrow morning at 11:30am. The boy may end up losing this foot yet. :(

Ross,
So sorry to read this latest update. I pray that Chris gets the help he needs tomorrow and that they can save the foot. All our prayers and best wishes go to all of you.

By the way - Chris may have coverage for uninsured motorist under his own auto policy if his losses are higher than he can collect under the policy on the vehicle he was in. Uninsured motorist coverage is the most complex coverage in an auto policy and requires an expert. There are reporting requirements and statutes of limitation that really really really demand top-notch representation.

Ross,

I don't post a lot anymore and rarely check out the small talk forum. I'm sorry to hear what your family has gone through, is going through, and will have to endure in the upcoming future because someone decided to get behind the wheel while drinking. I'm glad that your son and future daughter in law lived through such a terrible accident and very sad that your future mother in law lost her life. I know it has to be especially difficult dealing with this considering your own health concerns. Just know that you have a lot of people praying for you and wishing for the best possible outcome...even if you rarely hear from us.

Ross,

I'm a bit behind, but I'm so sorry you are having to deal with the "kid thing" in addition to all of the other problelms. There is nothing more I can say, I'm speechless at all of the trials being visited on you right now.

Take care of yourself. Kids are such a blessing, but they can tear you apart.

He is seeing an attorney tomorrow (Friday) to get into the picture. They both (Chris and Savannah) were insured through Progressive/Drive insurance and the claims lady is working with both policies to get the max benefits, but I don't trust them. I told him not to sign anything from them until he's seen the attorney.

Oh dear Ross-

I am so worried about this new report on Chris's ankle. I am hoping and praying that it will be limited in scope and that the specialist can get it back to healing mode again.

In spite of all the kid stuff, Chris really needs to catch a break right now.

Yes I too am worried now and I could tell in his voice last night, that so is he. How do you play it down to your kid that he may well lose the foot and in his case, may be better off without it? I'm shutting the hole under my nose until the specialist looks at it. Being that Dr. Glazer himself called yesterday, I think he's thinking this may even be too advanced for this particular specialist and send him on to Cleveland.

Good advice. If insurance companies seeing the company as possibly having to pay out a lot in medical expenses they will try to get Chris to accept a lump sum payment. In doing so, he forfeits any further claim. My Mom was in an accident and had neck injuries. The insurance company immediately came back with a $4000 settlement offer. Their lawyer advised her not to take it. Her medical bills ended up being much more.

In Chris' case if they offer a settlement, it's going to be a number that is going to look like winning the lottery to a 22 year-old. But this should tell Chris that he's possibly in for much more in medical expenses.

There have been a lot of advances in wound care. So I am hoping that although it sounds terrible right now, there is still something that can be done for him. He will probably need an excellent specialist. Praying for positive things for him.

Never give up-it's not over 'til it's over.

hi ross,
i'm so sorry to hear about chris's foot. i hope the specialists are able to spare the foot and help it heal.
please know that prayers continue strongly.
thanks for the updates.
wishing all the best,
sylvia

Ross, sometimes a hyperbaric O2 chamber is used to salvage really bad soft tissue damage and might save a limb. He would be better off through with a good prothesis than an unusable appendage. Prosthesis are so much more high tech then they used to be and living with one is much improved. One of the other RNs in the ER I worked in actually was a double amputee and was perfectly fine to perform every bit of her job description. Her only difficulty was walking up the hill from the employee parking lot. It sounds like even if the foot is salvaged he is in for a long long time of recovery. Limbs are not lightly removed but when they need to be there is still reason to expect a bright future. I know how hard this is on a parent and how horrible that someone took it upon himself to drive impaired! I am so sorry your family is going through this.

Dear Ross and Lynn:

I am so very sorry about this recent news about Chris's foot. Obviously, if something drastic needs to be done, he is going to need you both there to "hold him up". Of course, we know He will be holding both of you up.

Ross

I work with a girl who lost her husband years ago on a highway accident where the driver fell asleep crossed the center line. His parents and her got the politicians involved and man, did things get done and with good results.(well, as good and can be when there is a life lost). So always keep that option opened if things aren't turning out well for Chris and his girl friend and family. Prayers to all of you and hang in there Dad!

Ross,

I just completed reading all of the posts in this thread. I am very saddened to learn of the tragedy. I will keep your entire family in my prayers. I hope the driver responsible will finally now rot in prison. It is cases like this were the guilty party needs to be put down immediately. He has had way to many chances and should now suffer the consequences.

Having just logged on to VR for the 1st time in a while, I just spent the last 40 minutes browing through this horrible thread. Ross you and your family deserve health & happiness. I can only wish that it all works out for the best for everybody.

Best regards,
Jess

Ross,

Ross,

This is my first time on the site in a while. I just can't seem to find the time or energy anymore. I was on the chat Sunday for a few minutes but I did not hear about your son until just now.
I was shocked to read about your son's accident. I am so sorry that you are going through all this. I will sure keep you in my prayers.
Have you all contacted Social Security? Can his doctors give him a timeline on how soon they expect him to be able go back to work? If it is more than 6 months, and it sure looks like it will be, he should be eligible for Social Security diability. A friend of mine was in a motorcycle accident quite a few years ago and mangled his leg. He was able to get disability until he was able to return to work. As a matter of fact, he used to be a welder at the shipyard and of course, could not do that job anymore. He was able to get some training for a job he would be able to do. He collected Social Security until he was able to return to work. Here we have lawyers who specialize in SS and you get a free consultation. They review your case for free and if they think you are eligible, they work for a certain percentage of the back payment. It might be worth looking into.
Again, you and your family are in my prayers.

Praline I only wish. He doesn't have enough work credit years for disability. He's really stuck in a position that no one should ever be forced to be in especially through no fault of their own.
