When my husband Joe was recently hospitalized for pulmonary hypertension, they did an echo. This is a fantastic hospital with the best techs. The doctor came in and told us that Joe's valves had problems, both mechanicals, and his tricuspid as well.

He scheduled a TEE and that showed no problems with his mechanicals. His tricuspid is leaking, but that was deemed an innocent bystander to his pulmonary hypertension.

So--echoes are OK, but if anything shows, I wouldn't hesitate to request a TEE to confirm things.

nancy's right.... they still use echos for joey's follow up. tee's are used only if/when they see any changes or
something that needs closer looking at.
i imagine they must look at those two little leaks closely when they do joey's echos, and check for any changes in them from previous echos.

if you're at all concerned, why not ask your cardio?
