When my husband Joe was recently hospitalized for pulmonary hypertension, they did an echo. This is a fantastic hospital with the best techs. The doctor came in and told us that Joe's valves had problems, both mechanicals, and his tricuspid as well.
He scheduled a TEE and that showed no problems with his mechanicals. His tricuspid is leaking, but that was deemed an innocent bystander to his pulmonary hypertension.
So--echoes are OK, but if anything shows, I wouldn't hesitate to request a TEE to confirm things.
