Pool life @ 7weeks?

Hello,

Do you think it is ok to submerge yourself in water (with a tshirt on of course) to cool off from the summer heat? No swimming just walking in the pool?

It's ok. The doctor cleared me for it at six weeks, and I was in the pool three times last week. I'm not swimming any strokes until I hit 8 weeks, but I was able to use my flippers and a board and stayed in about 40 minutes.

If the incision is completely closed then there shouldn't be any problem getting it wet in a pool. At about six weeks my cardiologist picked up his cell phone and got my surgeon on the line to set his own mind at ease about clearing me for cardiac rehab. I watched my cardiologist raise his eyebrows at me and smile. When he hung up he said my surgeon said if I felt like water skiing it was also fine with him. My cardiologist commented that he wouldn't recommend that yet because he didn't think surgeons tied as perfect knots as they thought they did. I had the heartport method so of course I did not have my sternum split but I had plenty of incisions and holes.

Justin had his sternum, split (for the 3rd time) and he was cleared to go swimming at his 6 week check up, actually he was cleared to surf too, but he is 17 and recovers quickly, but as long as there is no openings in your incision you should be fine to go in the pool, Lyn www.caringbridge.org/nj/justinw

Just squeezed and pulled at my incision to make sure there was no openings or drainage (there has not been for 2 weeks) and POP out squirted a little red/yellow just like a pimple!??? It was a little bumpy area over the middle of the incision and that is it. I guess I will wait a little longer to be sure

That sounds like a good idea Cory. I've never had any drainage from mine, so that's why I wasn't afraid to get in the water.

I got in the pool at 7 weeks (just last week) for a cool-off (but no real swimming). My incision isn't draining anywhere but I have had a few lovely threads surfacing here and there.

I think because it was so hot and we have no air. The nurse practioner said he could go in the pool but not any lakes this summer. We haven't had a chance yet. The contradiction was he could go IN a pool but he can't swim yet. I laughed later that he could go in and drown. We haven't been in yet though.

For those who went in before 8 weeks we're you able to move okay or do any swimming? We may go to the pool this week if we get a chance. He is still a little scabby for a public pool though so it depends on whether my friend has time for us this week to invade hers.

Wendy, Justin didn't have any problems w/ moving around, actually he said it feelt better moving in the water which makes sense. actually we got one of those blue pools with the ring around the top this summer (really pretty reasonable at bj) because I know it would be great for recovery to be in water and heck it's hots and humid here. as an added benift it really makes my back feel good too. I think since Andrew is so young, he probaly will spring back pretty easily too,
how hot is it there w/out AC? Lyn

WhAT did you do with the threads? Pull them out with tweezers?

Wendy, Justin didn't have any problems w/ moving around, actually he said it feelt better moving in the water which makes sense. actually we got one of those blue pools with the ring around the top this summer (really pretty reasonable at bj) because I know it would be great for recovery to be in water and heck it's hots and humid here. as an added benift it really makes my back feel good too. Hi Lyn,
It isn't too bad in here today. We found an old window unit (back from Andrew's last surgery- some one had given it to us) and I have the house closed up and two bed rooms closed off and it is reading 83 in the hall. We have two 18 inch high velocity fans pulling it out of the boys room in the back and it is not too bad. All the windows are covered too.

We had one of those pools last year and it was great. It gave up the ghost though. It was hard to keep it clean as the cover was gone and we have a giant tree in our small yard. Loved it though.

It says it's only 86 now. It is humid and sunny but I drove tword a storm earlier today. Yesterday was 100 or real close to it. How is it by you?

right now it's "only" 90 but so darn humid. it's funny you mention trees since Justin was just sayinng (when I had him getting leaves out that I called his rehab ) ) that maybe it wasn't the best idea to put it under a tree.

As long as they are being maintained with CORRECT chemicals.. We have a very large pool where I live..several times this summer, I have noticed a hacking cough..even sunbathing a few feet away.Not in water..when I would come home it would leave after a few hours...Now, when I go down..take a few minutes to see if I cough... hacking talking to friends, ect. if so, I leave....knowing that pool is not safe to go in with strong chemicals.....Bonnie
