I just read that you have the mosaic. I know that you had some good things to say about bovine for AVR.

That is funny that your surgeon said that about the valve. Jeff has the same valve and his surgeon said it was the Mercedes of valves, not the Cadillac but the Mercedes. Well, other than their choice of expensive cars they seem to have the same high opinion of the valve. That is good to hear.

I am speaking for Jeff again, since isn't on here as much as I am. He had his aortic valve replaced with a porcine valve. There was regurgitation with his valve. I don't know all the technical/medical terms.

Given the frequency that post surgery A-fib is mentioned, with 46 votes now in I am surprised that not one person who voted has had ongoing problems with A-fib that have necessitated permanent warfarin therapy. Before this poll I also suspected that the majority of members that had tissue valves were bovine, this appears not to be the case. Mary thanks for running this poll.

The poll only lets you select one option. I have a porcine mitral valve but if I selected that it would not let me also select that I have A-fib and on coumadin for the A-fib.

If you developed afib after having the porcine valve implanted, then you would mark the last option. We were trying to determine how many members with tissue valves actually end up on coumadin anyway. If this is your case, then you're the first!

Sorry to here about your AF, but it is still early in your recovery-meaning that your heart is still healing and remodeling. Can you tell me what type of a
Maze your surgeon did( it should be on your surgical notes) and has your local cardiologist tried to cardiovert you? Don't give up hope!

Most likely I was in A-fib before the valve replacement. Maybe I should change my vote?
Never give up is my moto! In fact today had appointment with my pacer Doct (whom is the cutest thing and has this really adorable accent) who is concerned about my A-fib and very fast pulse Constant pulse is 100 to 106.
Converted the day prior to the Pacemaker implant but I only lasted 5 minutes :-(. We talked for an hour today not only him but prior to him his PA about AVnode ablation, since the Maze is not working. I said No to this. They also mention doing a Cather ablation (going inside the heart and trying a convertion) but this is basically the same as a AVnode ablation. Its a last ditch attempt to get you out of A-fib even the doctor admitted to this. And once done You still have A-fib but since the circuit from top to bottom is broken You just dont feel the Afib and the lower portion of heart stops enlarging if that is happening.
Doc has decide to try Digoxoin for 30 days. Then there is another drug he talked about but that requires being in hospital for 3 days as they dose you to monitor you entire time. Lets hope we dont need to go there.
I had a complete Maze procedure even went into the Aortic Artery & Valve, top Atial, backside top Atial and bottom venticule The works! Even had the Left Atrial Appendex removed! I don't think Dr. Valdes missed a spot that could lead to A-fib. LOL well on second thought I guess He missed something!
Until I can be told its 100% successful I am waiting on any more circuit cutting on heart!

I am personally against AV Node ablation. It is like burning a bridge.
If a new drug or procedure comes along that works on AF, AV node ablation
means your never be in SN. Of course, I may never be either, but It least
I can dream.

I'm bringing this poll up again after reading Mtbiker's last thread. It reminded me that he received a porcine valve, and he needs to vote in this poll.
(As Bonnie said, Thank goodness they don't use chicken valves for replacement or else I'd starve! )
Ok, I'm back on track here.
Anyone who's received a tissue valve lately, and not marked the type they received, please do so.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. We've had so many surgeries in the past few months....it will be interesting to see the numbers.
As you can see in my signature, I have the Carpentier/Edwards (or Edwards Lifescience) Perimount RSR Pericardial Bioprosthesis 2800, bovine, 23 mm, in the Aortic position.
It is one of the Perimount Magna valves. I do not know what RSR stands for. I do not believe it has the new TFX (thermafix) process added on to it, but it does have some type of anti-calcific property.

I had A-fib in CICU and then it went away. I was told that 30% of heart surgeries have some a-Fib, but usually it resolves itself before patient leaves the hospital. Don't have the statistic on "usually" .
