I'm BAAAACK and got a Licenses Number!
Hey, Everyone, I'm back home!!!! Four days post-op and I'm feeling terrific
. Can't wait to eat REAL food again!
Everything went so well - there were guardian angels all around me! When I checked in Wednesday morning, I got my first sign of things to come. The nurse at CICU (pre and post-op) was an incredible person who told me how she had emigrated here from Poland years ago. Come to find out she is from one town over from where my grandmother grew up. We talked about great Polish food, which was hard because I was so hungry!
I refused all offers of valium-like substances. I drew on a massive amount of energy from prayers, thoughts, etc. that were sent my way. The anesthesiologist then came in and introduced himself. Second sign. He was an elderly gentleman whose infectious smile told me I would be all right. I told him I would be eternally gratelful to him if he would extubate me before I woke up. He said that unles my body did something stupid, he would.
And then when the "final" minute comes, an OR nurse took my hand and told me to tell her where I'd like to be at that moment. As I described the setting, she said, "Sounds like a lake in Wisconsin" which is exactly what I was remembering from my youth and apparently hers because she was from there too! I was so calm I was almost on a "high".
Five and a half hours later I awoke, relatively lucid (I can prove it - I repeated what was said later!). And, yes, I was extubated! It was then that my doc told me that they had repaired my aortic valve. I said I rememebred that he had said he could count on both hands the number of aortic repairs he had done so now he'd need to add a foot ! He also bypassed my LAD. I had an angioplasty with stent six years ago that showed up somewhat occluded so they thought they'd give me "two for the price of one" (glad it was Happy Hour). They found in the TEE during surgery that a leaflet was perforated causing my severe regurgitation and insufficiency. My murmur showed up the day after my angioplasty so there of course may be a correlation (different cardios). I have to let that go, though, just so happy to be healing.
Four hours later I sat up for a long time. It felt great. I was in very little pain and, yes, cherished every little ice chip!
Slept well and woke up the next day, walked about fifteen minutes and promptly got booted out of CICU. I took everyone's great advice about the walking and the inspriometer and was a model patient. I had no complications, walked a mile two days post-op and would have been released yesterday except on "general principles" of never releasing someone three days post-op. Didn't get too mad because I've vowed to go from a TYPE A personality to an A minus personality!
By he way, got one number on the truck that hit us all. It's a "6" or a "9" can't tell because I may have already been run over!
Sorry for being so "long-winded" (imagine an open-heart patient being called long-winded!). Just soooooo happpy - had to share. And, yes, I promise to "nap, nap, breathe, breathe, walk, walk". I want you all to know that I got to read your postings while in the hopsital. They were wonderful and very funny (yep, only original parts here, Steve). You are all incredible. Now off to la-la land.....
