I had a very good experience at Mass General

Hello -

I had a mitral replacement done by Dr. Gus Vlahakes at Mass General and it went extremely well. They were very organized and are large enough to have a whole floor of one of the wings devoted to cardiac surgery recovery.

I also heard that Brigham and Women's is excellent and has a long and excellent history in this area as well. B&W is in process of building a new cardiac care facility.

Mt Auburn and Leahy Clinic are a little smaller but are also well regarded. I don't know if Mt Auburn does transplants and Open Heart Surgery but they have a good catheterization and stent facility.

If I were going through this again, I would go to Mass General again. When I was asking around, I heard more than half the surgeons on their staff mentioned as "one of the best you could find".

Good luck -

John

Brigham and Women's and Mass General are always in the top ten. No need to go farther than that at all. If I were near you, I would absolutely choose one of those institutions.

Best wishes,

The time is rapidly approaching when a surgeon must be chosen for my bypass (LAD)/mitral valve repair procedure. Tomorrow I have an appointment with a surgeon at Mayo clinic for a second opinion. This is to check out the information that the greater volume of surgeries the better the outcome.

I have already talked to the head of the cardiac surgery dept. at UW-Madison, WI. Unless Mayo offers options I am now yet aware of, I lean very much toward having the surgery done in Madison. Both the surgeon and the hospital really impressed me very much.

Are there definitve questions to ask? The Mayo surgeon is sure to be equally well qualified.

How would you chose?
