Well if it isn't one thing it's another... I'm doing fine, but now Mom isn't doing so well. She scared me badly enough that I got packed and in the car to make the drive down to Houston within 30 minutes of talking to her this afternoon. I'm here now and trying (in vain) to convince her to go to the hospital tonight. She says she'll go in the morning, but that's not making my sister or me feel any better. I keep asking her what she would do if the situation were reversed and she says "That's different. I don't have a life threatening illness." I'm still not convinced that she should wait, but I figure I'll give her that much control for now. Tomorrow morning she WILL be going to the ER, even if I have to call the paramedics to get her there (hopefully it won't come to that).

In case you're wondering, basically she's so lathargic she hasn't gotten out of bed all day except to go to the bathroom. She's had maybe 4 bites of food all day (2 of which I brought to her when I got here) and I noticed she even had to set a stool in the shower so she could clean up yesterday and a chair by the kitchen counter so she could feed the dogs. She sounds completely drained of all energy and says she feels like "crud." She says this has been building up for the last two weeks, but she was hoping it would go away. She didn't even go to the doctor until yesterday, where they figured out nothing and won't have her thyroid (she had her thyroid removed several years ago) blood work back until the middle of next week. In the mean time, she can hardly function and has us all worried sick.

Hopefully tomorrow we can get some answers and she can at least work towards feeling better. I understand her stubbornness (I have it too) but that doesn't make it any easier to deal with. I pray she won't fight me in the morning...

Hi, Niki---

Don't let your mom put this off. If you need further evidence of why not, although you and I both know she shouldn't, take a look at my threads about my mom. She put off her incessant nighttime vomiting and lethargy as "normal" for her acid reflux disease (what??!) until my sister-in-law and I practically had to threaten her to get her to see the doctor, and then she didn't until she ended up jaundiced, and after a scan, found pancreatic cancer. I shudder to think what would have happened without the symptoms she'd been having.

But I know what you mean--although my mom is back in ICU for round #2, she's still being a pain in the you-know-where.

I'll be keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers and hope that everything turns out OK. And if your mom needs another reason why she needs to get checked out, tell her about mine.

Best,
Debi (debster913)

Hi Nikki....

Hi Nikki....

I second what Deb says....your mom needs to at least be evaluated and If she is that stubborn about not going, just remind her that she has taken care of her children, and now it's time to let her children help take care of her. Please know that I am keeping your mom and you all in my prayers, and please drive carefully if you have a long drive. Hugs, Harrybaby:D

Ditto the advice given....get her checked out. My Mom is the same way. She'll put off going to the doctor until she has to be dragged there. My best wishes for your Mom.

*Niki, sorry to hear about your Mom. I hope to hear some good news about her. Will be watching this site !!!

*Debi, sorry to hear your Moms still not well. I will remember her in my prayers.

Sorry Nikki, parents are like that. I had to take my dad kicking and screaming to the er after his heart attack. Honestly, after all I've been through, I can see why they want to stay away from the place. She knows she needs to go, but maybe she fears never coming back?

Nurse Nathan saves the day!

Mom was too stubborn to go to the ER last night, but we did put all of her meds together so we could go this morning. Last night I listed them off to Nathan and he said "Where's the syntroid?" When I asked Mom she said, didn't you get it? No, I hadn't. But we left it at that for the time being. Apparently it got Mom thinking, though, and around 4 AM she decided to check her pill box. Sure enough, there was no syntroid in there. There's no telling how long this has been going on. When she went looking for the synthroid it took her quite a bit of time to find it. We decided there was no point in going to the ER if we've figured out what was going on. After talking to Nathan this morning we decided not to go to the ER, since there isn't much they could do except give her the synthroid, which I made sure she took this morning.

SHE will tell you she was right in not going last night. I'm not letting her off that easily. But for now, I'm just glad we figured it out. Thanks for all the prayers. I think they did the trick. Now that she's taking her syntroid again she should start feeling better each day. Of course, she may have taken a year or two off MY life, but I'm sure I've done the same to her more than once. ;)

Very glad you were able to figure it all out, Niki!

Still ... thoughts/prayers coming to you and your Mom.

I'm back in Dallas and have left my sister to take care of her 3 week old son and our mom. I'm supposed to go to Arkansas for my FIL's 50th birthday celebration tomorrow and we will return on Sunday. I have an EP appt. on Tuesday, and I will probably go back to Houston that afternoon so I can help take care of my mom again. I'm HOPING she'll be feeling much better by then, but the way she's talking, she would really like me to come (even if she won't come out and say it). I told her there were better ways of getting me to come visit. After all, I was just there for 2 weeks a week ago! Granted, I spent most of that time at my sister's helping take care of my new nephew, but I saw her just about every day! I suppose she just needs a little bit of attention. Hopefully she'll be feeling better enough to give that grandson of hers a little more lovin'. I had thought it was odd that she didn't want to hold him more when he was first born... I guess now we know why.

Thanks for all of your kind words, prayers, and support. As always, I know where to turn when I need a shoulder (or 100) to lean on. :D
