Hi all, my husband Genaro should be having Aortic Valve & maybe root replacement in like 3 weeks and lately he's been complaining about shortness of breath and pain/soreness in his right breast bone area, did anybody suffer or does suffer that? I also need some reassurance since the day is getting closer I am getting much more nervous, just to update he is 31 years old and his name is Genaro we have a 4 year old little boy that absolutely adores daddy, how can I prepare for days daddy won't be home, can I take him to hospital with me???? I'm sorry for all the questions I guess I'm just straight out scared.... Thank you all for your support, Sincerely, Veronica.

Veronica-

I know that Genaro's surgery is coming up soon, but that doesn't mean that you can't call the cardiologist with urgent concerns. I think, at this point, any chest pain with shortness of breath should be told to the cardiologist asap. Let him/her sort out if it's anything to worry about. That's their job. If it's nothing, then at least you'll have peace of mind. The next three weeks will be stressful enough. So call and find out. If it were my husband, I would even call off hours and have them call me back with what should be done, either go to the ER or wait for an appt.

Let us know how it goes.

Veronica,

Ditto on what Nancy says. Give that Cardio a call. It may be nothing (maybe a pulled muscle perhaps) or something that needs looking into. Can't give you recommendations on having your son visit Genaro while in the hospital, both my kids have kids. A lot of kids find the hospital environment exciting but some get scared at anyone in a "white coat". And some hospitals are more strict than others over children visitors. If Genaro is having the surgery locally you might want to do a trial run trip to the hospital with the 4 year old and see how he does. Just have a back-up plan in case it doesn't.

As most of us "over the mountain" folks can tell you, the next 3 weeks will be an adventure, to say the least. But the three of you need to support each other. It ain't no walk in the park but y'all can get through this. You must trust in your faith and be calmed by that knowledge. We will be here at the "Dinner Table" to give you advice, comfort you, and provide that shoulder when you need it. Type any time--someone will usually be here or sign on very soon.

I will send my prayers and good thoughts for all three of you to get thru this together. Keep us posted.

May God Bless,

Danny

To allay some of your concerns...

Open heart surgery & valve-replacement has nearly become routine in the past few years. The hospital I went to was run like an assembly line, with pre-op folks on the right side of the hallway and post-op folks on the left.

Folks on the right (pre-op) were a wreck, shortness of breath, congestive heart failure, etc. Folks on the left (post-op) looked like a casting call for a zombie film - each with a incision stitched up in their chest and stumbling around the hallways with IV's on rollers (they get you up and around the next day). I found it rather amusing.

My experience of OHS was a few pretty crummy weeks due to pain and having to deal with the annoyance of Coumadin/Warfarin since, but that's about it - something one can take in one's stride.
